Yeah, the store started to work, but the client still pretty dead.

Interesting. I, and others I've spoken to, have noticed various weird errors on Steam the past few days [eg, white screens with odd error messages on them]. Makes me wonder if something was quirking and finally escalated to a critical point.
Just reconnected and started working again a minute ago for me, though.

Bump for an nginx 502 Bad Gateway.
Whee!
[edit] aaand, seems to be back. short one there, at least! [/edit]
[edit2] May or may not have had something to do with Destiny 2 access being granted to those who'd ported their game over to Steam. Just noticed that was new in my library sometime between now and four hours ago. [/edit2]
[edit3] Or it's as NB264 posted below! Didn't know regular maintenance day had changed! [/edit3]

Whatever it is, Steam is (still) bouncing up and down like a basketball.

I was thinking Destiny 2 as well. That's a bunch of people all hitting the servers at once, pre-loading for tomorrow's launch.

I don't think it's maintenance. Steam has come back online and offline several times.

They already did a lot to protect us from spending money by making sure we couldn't gift games from their store, now they're just going the extra mile.

"Basic routine maintenance" is Tuesdays, but that hasn't ever limited them in also doing server-affecting work any other day of the week, and they've been especially emphatic about such unscheduled events ever since the last interface update. In fact, I was surprised by last Tuesday (or was it the one before?) actually causing me issues, since for the past (3?) months since the interface update I'd basically only been getting them on non-Tuesday days.
Well, in fairness, I can only speak to downtimes, large-scale crashes, and large-scale client issues (that is to say, things I can confirm happened to other friends list individuals online at the time), and to the timing of the "you need to restart client" notices I've received. I guess those could be faulty server issues and delayed update notifications, respectively, so it doesn't strictly require them to be related to maintainence or updates.
At the very least, we can confirm that today's downtime isn't unusual [whether it was intended or not], even though the length of it certainly seems to be abnormally long.
