Hey guys, I am new here obviously, and I was curious about this Train topic. Can someone explain to me what is happening here?

A train is a chain of giveaways , A leads to B to C to D , Etc

In addition, most of the time those giveaways are invite-only and can be found in the discussion threads.

mhm and sometimes they are protected with SGtools , ensuring less leechers/undesirables enter giveaways, much like how u put ur games at lvl 1 because u wanted winners to atleast give back alittle

Hey, you made it to the forums :)

Exactly what WarFerret wrote above, it's when someone does a series of invite-only giveaways, starting with one giveaway (often linked from a forum post), which contains a link to the next one, and the only way to get to it (since everything is invite-only) is following the links in the "train".

There is a thread somewhere with links to several good topics that explains a lot of things that new members on Steamgifts could find helpful, although I can't find it right now.

+2 for effort!

Before reading this I actually made a giveaway with literal trains, but no "giveaway train." I can see how that may be confusing. Thanks for clearing this up for our new members!

You're welcome, glad it helped.

The irony of not finding the link to the thread with the links though :D

So, here is a question then, since they are invite only, how do I select people to invite to the train?

you create the invite only giveaway and post a link to it in the forums - assuming you want people in the forums to join - beyond that I do not know, never done one :)

Everyone who has the link can access it. If you post it in the forum, that would be everyone who reads the topic (where you have the link to the first invite-only giveaway in the train).

Some people like hiding the link to invite-only giveaways, through different puzzles.

It's also possible to do a invite-only giveaway and send the links through Steam to a select few.

That's where zelgh's magic guide to Steamgifts puzzles can be of help. Puzzles are not for everyone though. I did many puzzles (both solved and created) when I was new here, but I don't do as many now.

Then there's also SGTools, a way of restricting who can enter invite-only giveaways. Filtering options such as only users who have activated all the games they have won, only users who are not VAC banned, only users who have sent more than they have received are among the more common options. Using SGTools is frowned upon by some users (although I think that's mostly those who can't access the giveaways).

I found the thread with all the links!

invite only means, the only way to enter is by giving someone the link

so if you drop the link in a forum thread, you're inviting forum readers only(who match the level restriction)

how long does my train need to be in order to quality as a train?

never heard of a one cabooser :D?

you're the train operator, you can choose for it to be 2 or 100+ game train long (limited by gift slots but i once was on a 100+ train by one of the more seasoned gifters on this forum) (thought it would never end)

can be as short or as long as you want, in theory as short as two i suppose. or as many as your capable of doing at once within you sg restrictions if u wanted.

So please tell me if I understand:

I make say 4 GA's that are invite only. In GA 1 description I post the invite link to GA 2, in GA 2 description I post the invite link to GA 3, in GA 3 description I post the invite link to GA 4 and then I post the GA 1 invite link on the forums?

Correct
also a common thing to do is leave a link to the starting forum thread in GA4 , asking people to bump the thread so others may join your train
(or u can tell ppl not to bump? like i said before, you're the operator, you choose the rules)

or you can take extra measures with sgtools rules if you wish, but yes that sounds correct to me.. they can be difficult to construct if links are not all done properly, but yes thats correct.

Just a note: You create all the GA's and then go back and edit the descriptions with the links...

Also a Train is just ONE way of many to create giveaways for the forums, you can make http://www.itstoohard.com/create quizzes that lead to the giveaway link if someone gets your quiz right,
you can make jigsaw puzzles that show the invite only link once someone has down the jigsaw puzzle @ http://www.jigidi.com/
you can leave your link in an obscure hyperlink disguised as a word in a thread
and many more

Well, I want to start a train now! It sounds kind of fun ;). I need to let some GA's win so I can get some more GA slots open though :(

I am going to start my train here in a few hours, it will include some pretty solid titles so you may want to stay tuned!
