This is going to sound stupid (and it is) but hear me out.

What if there was on option to create a "random" giveaway? It would cost 30(maybe more) points and the game that is being given away is unknown to both the people who enter the giveaway and the giveaway creator. Only after the giveaway ends would everyone find out which game it is and the giveaway creator would have to give that game to the winner, and of course buy it if he didn't already have it. It would add a bit of excitement because you'd spend a lot of points and you could get shitty free game, OR you could get a great game like Witcher 3 or GTA V. It would probably have to cost more than 30 points because of that. Thoughts?

Nope. I don't want to risk the chance of being forced to give someone some asset flip trash.
If I'm going to give away trash, it's going to be the kind of trash I like, by my own choice.

Problem also is what if the game they ended up picking is one that the winner already have? I guess reroll the winning game in this case?

Hadn't thought about that but yea, the way you described it would probably work, unless everyone who entered for the game already has it. If that happened then the giveaway creator would be able to reroll the game that he had to give away.

Yea it would have to be a reroll. Imagine if you got bat rats first and then had to reroll and it became a much much more expensive game.

Maybe the giveaway is unknow only for the people who enter the giveaway.
The giveaway creator chooses a game and makes this type of giveaway, then the users spend the amount of points 30 or whatever without knowing the game is better than both not knowing the game.

I was thinking of this solution too. This would be much better. However, I'd never give away a game that someone most probably won't even install.

oh dear. After winning, there is a fear of not playing. That is useless.

  1. The aim is to increase the number of game possession?
  2. The purpose is to increase the number of fun playing games?

Usually, the latter.

Winning! → Play! → Important∑d=(´Θ`*)

Someone gets it and does not play.
It will be delayed due to circumstances of work and reality. it can not be helped.
Make time. Play around.

Such a feeling.
... I want to play more ... :)

Maybe make it a secret to the person who enters it but not the creator. if you want to risk giving away a 60 dollar game this wouldnt be a good idea for many people i think.

I personaly think there's someone who wants even the worst games, and would play them. That however is not me.

I would never enter for a unknown giveaway for fear that it would be either a garbage game or an expensive game I wouldn't play.

If it's among all games, the expectation value (and therefore points required) would be much lower - there are a lot of super-cheap games on steam, so I think you're much more likely to get one of those...

What in the hell?

The whole point of giveaways is, were or should be giving away something for someone to PLAY.
Considering how many games on steam i wouldn't play why the hell would i enter? Only people entering would be those who only want a +1 plus some desperate or really wishfull thinking people; 99 out of 100 they wouldn't win somehting they'd like, or heck something they already have.

Wich then begs the question why i would make such a ga. Why?
Sure, let me pour lots of cash on a random result you won't play. Makes complete sense. Even if it were cheap games only it would still be nonsense.

Noone even mentioning the giveaway region restriction crap and all?
Also why would someone pay a full price if something isn't on sale (and if you don't want to go to shady key resellers).
Might be nice for some secret santa way around christmas, but there are already groups for that.

You already said it yourself, it's a stupid idea.

Way too much pressure on the creator. On the other hand, it would not be truly random if the creator knew beforehand, so either way, the idea won't work.
The problem is that even cheap/bundled games can not be easily obtained within a 7 day limit. Which means that in the majority of cases where a crappy game is rolled, the creator still has to fork over many times the market price to obtain a copy from a third party site or god forbid it, the Steam Store itself. In that scenario, he might as well have spent that money on an AAA game to begin with.
However, with a few modifications, maybe there is hope for this idea. Make the random games roll from a preset pool of aforementioned AAA games, with both parties knowing beforehand. Thus, a generous creator will have the opportunity to contribute something that is bound to be at least a little good, knowing that he won't be forced to deliver a crappy game at ripoff price.

Edit: Thank you for the giveaways <- before certain haters show up, even though almost nobody else wrote it either
