The story about how Festivus came about on Seinfeld is quite interesting. It was inspired by something (also called Festivus) invented by the father of one of the scriptwriters, Dan O'Keefe. As he told CNN, "The real symbol of the holiday was a clock that my dad put in a bag and nailed to the wall every year...I don't know why, I don't know what it means, he would never tell me. He would always say, 'That's not for you to know.'" With home lives like that, it's no wonder they were able to come up with so many great stories.

Apparently, there was something of an "Airing of Grievances" as well: http://newday.blogs.cnn.com/2013/12/24/the-origins-of-festivus/
