Bye 200+ Golden Keys, I'm now down to 12. :(

Why can't they just have a cap and stop there? Sure, I wasn't using them, but doesn't mean I wanted to lose them.

BTW, anyone else collecting Golden Keys might want to check how close they are getting. Loops somewhere between 230 and 255.

255 is a cap in a certain variable type in computer programming.

I'm aware, FF / 11111111, but not like they couldn't just stop it there like other games do.

Have you spent all 12 of those keys? Perhaps it will go back to 255.

I don't know what a golden key is, but it sounds like it's close to impossible to collect more than 255 of it. If it was easy to achieve some other people would have reached it before and teared the devs some a new hole already.
So either you really are the first to notice this bug or the devs really don't give a shit. Because if they did this should be hotfixed within a day, considering how popular o a game it is.

Yeah it's really unfair if it's really all gone... are there lots of people that experienced the same thing? Maybe send feedback about it to Gearbox together... It's not nice to punish people that launch BL2 every time for the keys and take all the effort away, I stopped using the codes when I got too lazy to even launch the game.

I got up to around 100 without using any, then realized on my last playthrough: oh wow it's a lot more fun when you have cool weapons. I wish I hadn't saved for so long.

Maybe just use them?

I've been saving them for when I need better loot. I've had a few times when I'm still carting around loot 10 levels lower because of bad luck with drops, and then I'd use the keys.

Saving up 250 and more keys is not that worthy, the loot inside the trunk is good, but nothing really that justify all that stockpiling. You can just find better loot by playing normally and/or farming bosses.

What are those keys and shift codes? Just started playing BL2 just now and I'm alone. D:

pretty much another ingame currency which you need to open the "golden chest" in Sanctuary.
For opening it once, you need one golden key and it will give you one to two epic items on the level of the character opening the chest :P
You can get golden keys here and even ingame with the overlay on here.
There are also tweets and facebook posts from Gearbox that give you golden keys.

You enter those codes in the main menu under Extras -> Shift Codes (for which you need an account :P)

Another hint: (Don't know if legal) <----
Using "Gibbed's profile editor" for BL2 you can easily modify your "saved" profile.bin to get keys more easily :P
But once you're on this path, it could ruin your fun :)

There's a crate in Sanctuary (once you get to it) that uses these "Golden Keys". You might use one on accident the first time -- it's fine, the keys are fairly plentiful. That crate has a much higher chance of much better loot. [edit reason="abaris919's ninja post has better links"] An easy [/edit] way to make sure you get more keys is following @ECHOcasts and @duvalmagic (Randy Pitchford) on Twitter. I stopped bothering to even jump in and redeem them after a while though, since I'm a hoarder and I haven't even used any of my golden keys yet.
Shift codes are how you redeem the keys (and occasionally, other items). You need to sign up for the Gearbox Shift thing to be able to do so. It's slightly complicated, but you only have to do it once.

None at all! :)
I often forget about the Orcz site since I have a feed reader that can selectively pop up matches for "shift" and Mr. Pitchford usually tweets about them all, even the Facebook ones. But yeah, the Orcz site is definitely a better source if you don't follow that closely. And I hadn't seen the Guide version yet -- nice!
