I am looking for a good open world/ survival game that i just can just play for hours. Any Ideas?
I like games like Left 4 dead, Skyrim, How to survive,Fallout 3 and that's a few to give you an idea. I am not trying to spend more then $10.

The point of don't starve is well, to not starve.

it's harder than it sounds.

Random generated maps, no real "quests".

To me the most underrated game ever. Found this while trying to look for a fallout clone nd ended up getting the whole series. Clear Sky isn't that good, but the first and third are amazing.

Rust = Survival, open world start with a rock - naked and build your life trying survive against environment and other players, find others and build a village.

Nether = Survival horror. Open world on map PvE & PvP all against each other or with each other, beta stage, needs work but good. oh and did i mention the teleporting creatures + exploding zombies? All good. :))
There are others but those two are so far what i am keen on. :)

Yeah uh, the "find others and build a village" isn't going to happen unless you have friends to play with preemptively.

my experience is survival sandbox games tend to be kill on sight and eventually one mega meta group takes over,

These games need to noob friendly to succeed, prey-predator balance needs to be self correcting like nature

Prepare to die.

It is so enjoyable because it is hard. Every accomplishment, every defeated boss or enemy you could not defeat previously is a victory achieved by you, and not the game that does the gaming for you (Like with Ryse, where you cant fail minigame button mashing things, because you dont have to do anything to win them).

Exploration is so awesome in the game, finding armor and items, areas and story etc. is just so much fun.

Terraria is 2d but open world/survival/exploration with platformish elements; it's a little like a 2d Minecraft.

Don't Starve is another 2d open world/survival game but not as platformish.

"just like a 2d Minecraft" is totally an insult towards Terraria, the only similarities between the games are that in both you mine and craft and that what you mine is block shaped but unlike minecraft in Terraria you are not trying to survive really, but instead conquer dungeons, explore the underground find epic loot like some rare items that are not craftable or pieces of some other item and stuff, killing bosses, participating in events such as killing the Slime boss, fending off Snowman Raid during christmas etc.,when you kill a boss called "wall of flesh" you are like entering in another dimension the game just chances entirely. So calling it a 2d minecraft is not correct.

Good point; the similarities are superficial given all of that extra content. I have mostly just noodled around and built stuff and explored so far, and am still building up to all of the boss fights. I greatly prefer Terraria even though I've only scratched the surface of it so far -- I love the aesthetic and I prefer 2d, and I like all of the stuff to do that I've already done and the stuff that's waiting, and all of the neat little touches like the goldfish that walk in the rain and the townspeople. Getting ready for the boss fights is a big incentive in that game.

if they go on 75% sale, 75% of those I'm pretty sure will be less than $10.

There's a game called Rust that just got greenlight. It's still in it's early stages, but it looks promising in my opinion.

I also see that no one has suggested Misamata. I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for exactly and I'm sketchy on the plot but I believe you're a scientist on an island who has to collect flowers and research them to find a cure for this disease you have. There's realistic navigation involved, how to track where you are.
