So I heard I dunno, 6 months or something ago, that apple announced apple arcade, where you pay 5$/5€ a month and have access to a handpicked gamelib which is currated by them and only has (according to them) the crème de la crème of games, including apple arcade exclusives.

I recently got Sayonara Wild Hearts and a friend of mine told my that this is also a game which is offered by apple arcade so I took a look at their selection and I gotta say, at least 5 games were really interesting for me and really my taste and I would have tried out at least 30 I guess,.. I won't get it because I have still a T O N of games to play and I am happy with my good old steam lib and don't need any additional lib (yet haha ;) )

I would like to know what you think about that topic cuz tbh I was pretty shocked the first time I heard that apple wants to play somehow a part in the gaming industry... somehow... I mean I just never have thought that they would do that haha.. soooo what do you think about apple arcade :D ?

Seems to be directed only to folks using Apple hardware. I'm not planning to leave PC/Android platforms, at least for foreseeable future.

Apple as that company that created a special type of patented screws so people can't open and repair their own devices?
That company that steal $ from USA customers by telling them lies about what is broken and how much they need to pay Apple to repair it?
That company that is against Right to Repair Act?

If this is the Apple you are speaking about I would never want to do anything with them and would not want anything from them even for free.

Yeah, that and the success of the iPad/iPhone (i.e., the backbone of their rise to market share and stock price) is based upon a mountain of humanitarian crimes (which they have, to be fair, cleaned up and desisted with continuing, but still). Just look up the history of Chinese workers and the creation of the iPad/iPhone, if you're not familiar. It will make your jaw drop. Actually, I'll save you some time...there's a good article here.

So yeah, I've never been a big fan, but that period turned me off pretty much indefinitely. All of the big tech companies mess up (Google, Microsoft, Oracle, etc.), but I can't think of any examples as egregious as what Apple has done.

But they sure have some good marketing. People are willing to continue to overpay for their stuff. Gotta admire how insanely good they are at it.

Ah I remember that people committed suicide and that the first response was not to make people life better but to build a net around the building so suiciders would not die and could go back to work.

Yeah their marketing is strong so people are buying overpriced things. I love how for the price of new Apple items you can also build a good high end computer that will be better than anything Apple can sell you.

Apple Arcade on works on machines that can run an OS less than 2 years old. With the way they treat apps and OS availability like it's going out of fashion before the original hardware warranty on their Macs expires, they have no idea what the fuck they're doing.

Yeah, people might have hated Apple a bit while Mr Jobs was still around, but their current CEO needs his head removed for the shenanigans played with most of the hardware & software rolled out in the last 3 or so years.

All I really care about Apple Arcade is the moment when Exit the Gungeon stops being exclusive to it, and apparently, it's coming this year.

Not for me. Cheap monthly price though.

I've been a mac user forever (that won't change even if Apple the company sucks) and there's not a chance that I'll ever pay for Apple Arcade or own an iOS device. I honestly just see this arcade thing as their way of controlling how we game on their platforms. I've read about how Apple put an obstacle in the way of Steam Proton being developed for mac too. They got exclusive deals for games (Cat Quest II) for their Apple Arcade, banning a mac release on Steam, while Apple Arcade isn't even available on Mac.

Not yet, anyway. It was announced at the time it would come to Mac as well, we'll have to see I guess.

With the lack of Origin, Uplay, and Epic games available on Mac, Steam is the main client of choice for Mac users, next to GOG (outside of the putrid App Store). Apple are playing dumb fucks if they're going to succeed using an EPIC mindset.

Yeah, pretty much. Although, sadly, Apple tends to have a following that Epic doesn't have. You know the ones that use brands or products to try and set themselves a higher social status? Yeah, those. =(

Never had a mac so I don't really know, but can't you just dual boot OSs like on PC?
Back when I used Linux I always kept a Windows install for gaming, eventually got tired and just went back to using Windows for everything.

You can, but I really don't want to do that. A lot of people like to throw that out there as the solution, but it really isn't one that I personally agree with. I have a lot of design and developer tools on my computer as-is, so resources are important. I have developed cross-platform apps for iOS and Android for clients and I do all of that on OSX. That's something you can't do on windows believe it or not. I don't see why I should have to partition my computer and potentially slow down my machine for games when there are so many games that DO run natively. =)

I've considered getting a windows machine just for gaming since I do own some windows-only games, but it's one of those things I've set a low priority to. Someone else gets to enjoy some of those via family sharing. Haha. ^^

Yeah that seems like a pretty good reason. I have heard before about the whole thing were you NEED a mac to develop and publish iOS apps, if you ask me that's an asshole move from Apple.
On linux at least there's Wine, results vary but it's an option. So my only idea left would be a virtual machine.

A Hackintosh works as well. :)

Absolutely not for me lol. That takes some work to set up and maintain. More even than simply partitioning your mac to run Windows. I have a friend who made a Hackintosh because he needed to run OSX when we were doing a React Native project (Yuck) on a uni course. He just ended up buying a Macbook Pro in addition to his Windows machine, and converted to using the macbook for developing stuff because of how fast they compile code. Everytime there was a software update on the Hackintosh, it broke things. Too many crashes. Hackintoshes are for people who love mucking around with computers, they aren't really for people who need a reliable machine for their job. So, having something that works over something that almost works... which would you choose? XD.

Besides, there is a thing about old dogs and new tricks. I first started using macs in 2003. My last windows machine was Windows ME, or 2000 I think (hahaha). Using a Windows machine now for my work feels foreign. It's not better. The only advantage to using a Windows machine is that there are more games. Beyond that, I actually prefer macs for everything else. There is also the added bonus of having a reliable machine where I can't even remember the last time it crashed. That's not a lie. =)

Hey, I didn't say it works well. xD

I just tried it out one time, back when I was thinking about diving into Objective-C and iOS development. I got Xcode running and could play around a bit with it. But that was the peak of my ambition. Because, to be honest, my interest in doing coding after work is close to zero. Have to do it all day anyway, I just don't need more of that in the evening.

But yeah, having trouble with every new update would be a dealbreaker for me as well. Would I have been serious about it, I would have gotten a MacBook.

It kinda is shitty, although I don't fully understand the mechanics of why. I've only ever used Linux in uni. And while I can develop basic branded apps, I'm not an expert. I'm actually a graphic designer as my main job, but sometimes get the requests to do apps too, and I do have help to take those to the next level if required. I was using a mac to begin with due to that fact. But for people who are used to Windows machines, they should have the option even if that means third party software. As I said to KillingArts below, Hackintosh's are a waste of time and effort. If you're an iOS developer, you're just better off getting a mac to save time and therefore, probably saving money in the long run. It's different if you just want to play around with it as a learning experience. But if you're on deadlines, it's not reliable at all.

Macs are very rare over here, only people I've seen using them swear that the older models were way better than the stuff comming out nowadays. I also used to be in constant contact with free software enthusiast circles so my perception is heavily skewed against Apple, they usually tolerate Microsoft but despise anything with the Apple logo, it might have rubbed on them from their close-ish relation to Richard Stallman (I went to one of his presentations once and the guy is really good at convincing you that privative software is the enemy). I eventually got tired of Linux constant issues with compatibility and how every technical question ends up in an open war about minor differences in opinion, evrything is just so damn fragmented.
Well that was an unrelated tangent I went on.
I know that when you're pressed with time fiddling with an unstable system isn't an option, kind of the same reason why when you start digging you find out that many systems (specially governmental stuff) rely on ancient pieces of software that nobody is brabe enough to touch untill it breaks beyond repair.

Back in late 2014, I bought a brand new macbook pro, and went for the mid-2012 model. I was of the same opinion as you at the time. Their retina models were unstable in 2014/2015 and my previous 8-year old macbook (which still worked btw) couldn't be upgraded further. I went for something I could modify over time because I also don't like this new practice of sticking everything to the motherboard. I made the right choice, been happily upgrading the thing as I needed to. =)

Apple Arcade exclusives are just exclusive in the way that they don't come out for other mobile platforms (so, effectively Android). They can absolutely come out for other platforms like Steam. We already have some of those games for Steam, like What The Golf, Sayonara, Stela, Cat Quest II or Exit The Gungeon.

That's not entirely true though. The developers of Cat Quest II said that there won't be a mac version arriving on Steam because they have an exclusive deal with Apple Arcade. They are already on Steam for Windows... and I didn't say it wasn't. ;) That's where I saw the discussion on exclusive deals when other mac gamers asked about a future mac version like the first game.

You're not a mac user, so from your perspective, it's fine for most of those games. :P They do seem to have an absolute exclusive with Oceanhorn 2. That one may not appear on Steam and if it does, it'll be a while. There's been no announcement that I know of.

EDIT: I just checked and it seems that Apple Arcade is now available on OSX. Still, I won't be biting. I have a massive Steam library to play through. Steam and GOG are enough for me.

Apple Arcade is a pretty good deal. Don't regret subscribing. If you play mobile games, it's probably worth it. Especially considering it's kind of cheap. I was expecting more like 10€ per month. 5€ for those games is pretty good. I already beat several games. And I must say the best thing about it is that you only get complete experiences free of ads and especially free of micro-transactions. Those games are built to be fun, not to suck the money out of you. That alone is worth a lot to me in these times where the vast majority of mobile games is free to play with questionable monetizing.

Agreed. It's the most compelling argument I've heard for the platform yet. It's still not my thing, but I definitely get it if you game a lot on a tablet.

I still play casual games on the road, but I travel with either a slim laptop or a Surface, so Steam still works great for those casual games. Oh, and if it's the Surface, I can play those games with my finger that everyone else gripes about where they haven't replaced the touch instructions or cues with mouse ones. 😁🤣

Does Amazon still have their Amazon Underground app store? That's basically an Android competitor to the Apple Arcade.

Underground had a ton of free games you could play and instead of paying for MTX you just watch an ad instead to typically get a TON of in-game currency. Games on average werent as high quality as Apple Arcade, but I thought Underground was a decent offering for causal gamers.
