Maybe I'm weird but I like this "thanks" in every giveaway. When I'm doing some giveaway I wait for every comment and I'm glad when I see so many thanks. It's just nice and polite. I don't get it when people get mad because someone use generic "Thanks!" in every GA. Better this than nothing. :-)

Hah, good point!
The people actually put the effort into writing the word(s) instead of leaving a "ty" or "thx" :D

my feeling is that if you want to give away something (a game in this case), you just do it and don't expect anything in change, neither a thanks nor some points added to your cv level nor whatever else.
nevertheless as a winner of a giveaway i feel compelled by good manners to thank in a personal way the gifter, and the same happens if i have access to a giveaway that has something special, be it a puzzle to solve or a special requirement that i'm able to fulfill or an individual or group invitation to a restricted giveaway or a very desirable game or the gifter being somebody i know. beside that kind of cases, i try to thank anyway, but these days i do it only if i'm not in a hurry, and even then i tend to be somewhat repetitive.

Yes, you must! You must! Those who do not leave thanks are cursed and will suffer grave misfortune throughout their lives as their luck on Steamgifts withers into dust and ashes. THANKS FOR THE THANK GOD, GRATITUDE FOR THE GRATEFUL THRONE!
THANKS FOR THE THANK GOD! THANKS FOR THE THANK GOD! THANKS FOR THE THANK GOD!

Saying "thank you" in a giveaway is EXTRA HERETICAL!

On my last giveaway I made I didn't receive a thanks after sending the winner the e-mail with their key. They just marked it as received and that's all. :P I was mildly disappointed, but whatever.
I like to thank in a more formal way through mail after I win a GA, I don't really enjoy posting one line thank yous in every public GA...!

I am pretty new to this site. I have entered many giveaways, but not won any yet, and that's fine :) I am patient, and am not complaining.
What I have noticed on every single giveaway I've entered is many people writing a "thanks" or "thank you" in the comments. Is this just to be nice, or is it required for the gift-giver to actually grant you the win?
The reason I ask is I recently entered a giveaway and the creator said:
"Instead of the usual "Thanks" how bout you tell me your favorite game memory! LETS SEE WHO ACTUALLY READS THIS SHIT :P"
I noticed on my own giveaway that recently closed, after the winner was selected by the site, I was given the option to pick a new winner instead.
So I was just wondering, if you don't say thanks, will the creator of the giveaway pick a new winner?
