If you have Don't Starve, run TF2 to get items!

Well, I have the items in my inventory, since I technically ran TF2. I said "technically" because my computer suddenly doesn't like running TF2 past the initial load screen :/

if you own the game before the release date you will always get the items I think, no need to run TF1 before April 23

Does anyone know if I need to activate my inventory copy before release to get the items?
I don't have Don't Starve, but I have Poker Night 2 in my inventory and I guess it should work the same way.

Slightly off topic dont starve makes me ragequit so much! The time invested only to die and never see the game progres/get better. 7 hours played have not made it past day 13. I also never know what to build next to ensure optimal survival
