I recently received 2 comments on my Steam profile from 2 different (presumably) Lvl 0 Users with private profiles trying to recruit me for their clan and even offering a salary. Since I don't play competetive multiplayer games on Steam and they didn't even mention what game they want me for, this appears to be a set-up for some scam attempt but I can't tell yet what their endgame is.

I'm obviously not gonna respond but has anybody encountered this scamming technique before or any idea what they are up to?

Disclaimer: Since I am not naming any names just pointing to a 3rd party site (my Steam profile) this is not considered Calling out. Please don't block their Steam profiles or harass them otherwise as there is a remote chance this is just an innocent mix-up.

Anonymous1: add me for a quick talk, i have an offer, i couldnt add you for some reason...

Comment #2:

Anonymous2: Yo man, I know that you've already received other messages about joining the team, but we'd really like to have you among us... We're willing to pay weekly if you take part in some tournaments with us. If you're interested - add our team leader <redacted> , he will discuss your salary with you

It's a scam where they'll try and get you to install 'Teamspeak' or a voice client which is a RAT

I see. So not a new scam but basically the oldest one in the book.
The set-up just seemed unfamiliar.

I mean I appreciate the criminal energy but I wish they'd put a little more thought into it.

😅

Edit: Just a little sidenote for everybody as clueless as I:

RAT refers to a Remote Access Trojan.

The 'team leader' has a community ban. Perhaps scam related?

Nice find! ;) Apparently I checked both of the accounts that left comments but not the main account behind all 3 of them ':D

I had a similar one, but instead of asking me to join a pro team they invited me into a pro league, similar to FaceIt or ESL for CSGO. A friend of mine got the same thing as you did, but he didn't follow it up.

They would try to incite you to join by offering real money, saying there's no cost to entry, any skill is welcome, they have multiple games to compete in, etc. If you're convinced, they give you a website for you to create an account. Sometimes they will be impersonating another website like FaceIt or ArenaGG. Since you will be playing Steam games like CSGO or Rainbow Six Siege, you need to link your account with Steam, just like you do on Steamgifts whenever you login for the first time.

This is when they redirect you to a phishing site. Looks exactly like the Steam login site, and once you input your username+password it will ask you go put in your mobile authenticator code (assuming you have 2FA enabled). At this point your account is lost, you just gave them all the information they need to steal it.

Thank you for the detailled information!

This part of the message is not directed to you but to everybody else who might read this:

NEVER enter your Steam credentials into a 3rd party site directly. If you're unsure about a site log in via the regualar https://store.steampowered.com/ and then just click the login via Steam button on the 3rd party site. If that button is not there or it asks you to enter your credentials again it's a phishing site that's most likely trying to steal your account.

To be honest I'm quite tempted to fake-accept and pretend to be completly tech-illiterate and try to waste as much of their time as possible before they realize the jig is up 😈

But I suppose that wouldn't be a very productive use of my time 😅

Edit: That reminds me of a user here ages ago who used to make threads and YouTube videos about how he trolls scammers.

Sooo good ':D

Oh man i remember this guy. Brilliant.

And yeah it's always tempting to try to reverse the scam or frustrate them. I don't know why they don't see it as a waste of time other than enough people must fall for it to be worth it.

I'm in but keep in mind that I'm wasted on cross-country. We corgis are natural sprinters. Very dangerous over short distances! 😀

I've been getting these scams a lot lately. I don't think reporting them for posting on your profile will do anything since they haven't done anything illegal yet. I would have to play along and contact them and get them to post the phishing links in the chat window before I could report them and that's way too much work.
