i really liked the design and level progression on area 51. The way the enemies change as you progress is pretty cool

Was that on the PS2? I remember playing a demo of that game (at least I think so?) on Mortal Kombat Deception and it was AWESOME!

i played it on xbox but it was also available on PS2.
I'm glad you liked the demo; for me the game greatest strenght was the design/ enemies would change the deeper you went into area 51

TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect are one of the very best first person shooters out there. I love how fun they are, their atmosphere, and their replay value.

You're Mario riding on Yoshi and using a super scope

Some good quality, lesser known FPS games:

Strife: Quest for the Sigil
Shogo
Shadowcaster
Malice for Quake
Descent 1 and Descent 2
Forsaken

descent was one of the big titles of its time. wouldn't exactly call it "lesser known". ;)

i would also say, that descent is not a "fps" ^^

you play it in first person view, and all you do is shoot stuff. i would say it's the very definition of a FPS. :P

Permalink

well, then Red Baron is also a fps?
because you play it in first person view, and all you do is shoot stuff? :D

but still the first descent games where great. the new one (descent underground) is not very good

When people talk about the great FPS games in the 1990s, they usually talk about Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life, Goldeneye and a few others but Descent never gets the attention it deserves.

I played Wolf 2009 in December (was added as drm-free version to local "video games magazine" with dvd disc, a great deal), Also, immediately before it I played The Old Blood and one more time I played Return to Castle Wolfenstein just after finishing "2009". In my opinion this is the best Wolf in series (considering fact that Wolf 3D/Spear of Destiny are really outdated today and The New Order is very similar to TOD). I have a lot of fun with that game, best story, great marriage of oldschool shooting and (still) modern visuals plus game mechanics. Too bad that this gem is hidden from the community of gamers.

Watch Ross' Game Dungeon about it.

Long story short: A soulless, uninspired shooter with uninteresting characters, storyline and gameplay.

And the game received poor sales, so whoever was responsible decided to remove it from steam for good.

Sanctum/Sanctum 2. Really fun tower defense/fps games. You've probably heard the name before though

Tribes:Ascend. Never played it much myself, but was really good when I did

Blacklight:Retribution. Extremely fun during its time, kinda dead now I hear.

Edit: Dino D-day as already stated is a fun and hilarious game

How's Stalker unknown? Even now there's 223 people playing Shadow of Chernobyl. It came out 2007.
Clear Skies has 159 players. Came out 2008.
Call of Pripyat has 281 players. Came out 2010.

If there's over 100 simultaneous players after 5-8 years, then is it really unknown? Shadow of Chernobyl did sell over 2 million copies.

thought it was less known, and it's getting old too, so...
and just because a game is still being played doesn't mean it's well known

I second the person who wrote Shogo: Mobile Armor Division.
Strangely, even though Monolith is still a very much active, most of its library is barely known. I could also have listed here No One Lives Forever 1-2 as games often near the top of best FPS games of all time, at least until the people who made such lists for gaming-related sites were old enough to remember them. I can't even recall if I ever heard/saw somebody mention them in this decade.

TimeShift slipped under the radar, too bad, it's such a fun game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Timeshift's story doesn't really make any sense, but it's a great fps that does all it needs to, including a nice 'gimmick' of its own with the time powers... and it hasn't even aged that badly in the graphics department either.

all of which makes it the first game I thought of when I saw the thread's title.
