I have a Russian friend of mine who I play Sea Of Thieves with who can't play with me anymore because the severs in Russia aren't hosting the game right now, so what I want to ask is:

Has anyone else experienced similar situations (Russians or friends of Russians) With any online games, Is there some sort of online censorship going on in Russia right now? This may be an isolated incident and I'm overthinking this but it does concern me.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Sea Of Thieves is a game by Microsoft and they announced a week ago they'd suspend sales and services in Russia so that could be the reason but I'm not certain.

Since many game publishers announced to leave Russia completely - EA, Ubisoft, CD Projekt Red etc, - I'm sure that will happen with quite a few online games.

Yep. There are a lot of disconnects. Mobile games that my friends are playing don't work without VPN etc.
But I can play online Forza 5 that I bought on MS Store without any restrictions

LINX (London Internet Exchange) has confirmed the disconnection of the key providers of the Russian Federation (Rostelecom, Megafon) from the point of international traffic exchange.

Now the traffic will go through Asia, which means delays and a drop in pings are expected.

Some of the restrictions on Russian net is "self-censorship" so to speak, not sanctions it seems.

No, some publishers decided to disable services for users from Russia and Belarus.
But an XBOX user from Estonia, when using the region for downloading "Russia", also received a lock, he needed to change the download region to access the store, only after that he was able to unlock the console.
