Yes - it seems the asset has now been removed from the store - meaning you can't download it anymore - even if you got it checked out.
And the publisher has also vanished.
I wonder what happened?
They have removed assets I've bought before:
- Running Water VFX
(These from "Rivermill Studios" which changed name to RealtimeVFXStore) - Swarm Of Bats
- Underwater FX
These last 3 I actually paid money for.

It's because they were stealing assets as far as I can research. Not sure why it took unity another 3 years and how they got the chance to become the publisher of the week, with that thread being on the unity forums but it happens. Maybe you can message unity and maybe they'll give you credit to spend on something else. Not sure.
Do you get warnings when an asset gets removed?

No I don't get any warnings when assets are removed. It is only when you search for the actually assets you'll get that information.
The other assets where part of bundles and bought a long time ago. So it's not really a big loss.
The real problem is if I actually used these assets and they turned out to be stolen/pirated. I would risk being sued or DCMA'ed.

True, it sucks. I can't fully blame unity other than maybe their mods for not looking at threads like those and taking the asset down and requiring verification or something faster but it's likely because they don't usually interfere unless they receive a dmca, because whos to say that person didn't give them the right to do so. It was kinda obscure footage too, it wasn't like hollywood or fortnite assets that were uploaded.
This is my assumption but if this happened to an indie dev, likely they'd have to pay a % portion of the profits during the sale of the product with said assets based on the asset involvement, could be more could be less, but it would still suck. Likely the DMCA against you would be dropped assuming part of the profits were paid and they'd chase the asset "creator".
Just a constant risk of using assets vs making everything yourself, which is very hard to do the bigger the scope or the less you know. There's always going to be someone out there who will think of a clever way to "get rich quick". Basically you assume the risk, which is why I assume if you do by chance use an asset like this and gotta change it later, likely you'll have a timeframe to either change the asset or dispute the charge(claim ownership of the material which would be dumb in this case) and then you just move on.

Yes it is a risk I would have to accept. I can't make graphics, models, audio or music - and don't have the money for buying originals.
But until I actually make something, it is just a theoretical problem.

A publisher can choose to
- deprecate the asset: It is still downloadable but will not be supported/updated in the future
- remove the asset: It can not be downloaded, but it will still appear in your owned assets list

Why would they want to remove a asset? I've seen it used when assets may have been pirated, or created in error or simply because the publisher no longer want to be on the Unity Store.
