For the future, a solution could be to let a trusted friend who already owns the game try to redeem the key, and if he has the steamdb extension installed, he can tell you exactly which package the key is for. Thanks for the GA!

There is a risk related to doing this though. If the sub contains different apps or depots, it might still activate even though they already own the game. Paradox games are infamous for having different "fake" apps with almost every sub and of course there's different editions of games including DLCs or not. And in some rare cases, it might just be a difference in language depots or similar. So at least making sure it's not a Paradox game and it's not a different edition including different apps beforhand makes sense. Checking every available sub for a difference in depots beforehand might be too tedious, so that's the risk one probably has to take when doing this.
