O_O.
You went overkill man. Just my opinion but yeah you will be good for a long time with those specs, you should check out This site though, they are highly regarded as the best gaming notebook makers.
Alienware isn't bad really when it comes to notebooks just overpriced.
Even this would be overkill and will run things on high for 3 years
Comment has been collapsed.
You are really going overkill, wasting money, the 2k model I linked you will run everything high-maxed for years.
Its your money though, xotic has a better build imo anyways, you should factor that in if you want it to last long.
Comment has been collapsed.
Everyone should know better than blowing a fuckton of cash on that. Get something for around 2k (will still run everything maxed) and then in a few years start looking for a replacement.
Buy a new one for 2k, sell the old (or whatever) and you've still saved 3k, and the second one will have much better tech than your 7k one will in 3 years.
But hey, if you really have to spend 7k, it's about time I swap out my laptop as well, if only I could afford it... wink wink, nudge nudge, knowwhatImean
Comment has been collapsed.
either you're exaggerating or that's one shitty house.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well 7k is TOOOOO MUCH for a computer...i spent 630 and i can run everything out now at max at around 40+ fps....except total war shogun 2 XD that only gets 30
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah at maximum. most games i get 60+ at all times.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, with most PC games also being designed to work on the PS3 and Xbox 360, it doesn't cost much to get a laptop that'll run pretty much every game out there currently.

3DS/Vita are both fine for on the go unless you are never home to play PC games of course, then you might get bored of them...

It totally sucks.
If you want computer to play and have such cash just fcin buy monster PC (for that price it will be 3x more powerfull than that crap). Laptops are for working or multimedia not playing. Good laptop should play 1080p movies, weight max 1,5kg and the battery should last minimum 12 hours of constant work.

Laptop is for portability, Debating liquid coolant (yes there is one for laptops), getting a fan for the bottom anyways, weight doesnt matter, 18.4" is what my current desktop uses, you can upgrade its just harder, keyboard Im getting the thermaltake ultimate, price not really a factor
Comment has been collapsed.
"you can upgrade its just harder"
then change that cpu in laptop or change gpu. Oh sorry you cant because it is solreder to motherboard and if you try you can destroy that overpriced laptop (by the way you cant upgrade motherboard either). the only thing that you can upgrade in laptop without any harm or risk is dvd drive and nothing more.
"getting a fan for the bottom anyways"
with that statement you tell us you will use it as desktop replacement so why not buy normal pc instead
"weight doesnt matter"
then buy PC! Also it negates that this laptop is "for portability" as you said.
"keyboard Im getting the thermaltake ultimate"
good idea as cache in laptop one is terrible yet again you must buy keyboard to that laptop so you can play games then again why not buy normal PC.
that thing that have 18,4" screen cant be considered a laptop but some stupid experiment of converting normal pc to overweighted and oversized block imitating portable computer that will burn out battery in 1 hour (in other words that thing is not portable at all). Trust me the best solution for you as you have that 7k and you dont consider prices is to buy powerfull PC + ultrabook for work (if you do) and eventually + game console for portability.
But still if you want to buy it do then so and tell us after half a year if it was worth it i personally wish that you will like it.

that laptop must be running fu%&ing hot!!! definitely not a _lap_top...
protip: get a fan!
Comment has been collapsed.
i meant a fan for your legs, not for your laptop
if you need a cooling mat, then you will own a desktop, no matter how portable it is
for sure and out of curiosity: i understand the ssd helps, but with the 4.1GHz Overclocked cpu, gpu in your favorite gaming configuration and wifi on, what is the expected battery duration?
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't think it's really worth the price...I would rather get Razer Blade and save some money for the time being...

So I would say buy an awesome PC for 1200€/$ and a nice Laptop for 700€/$...alot cheaper than the alienware laptop and IMO way better to upgrade and in terms of heat and weight.
You could also just buy a 700$ laptop now and a 700% laptop in 2 years and that would be cheaper and also better, because hardware changes fast and you Alienware laptop won't get better over the years ^^

Just a heads up, the m18x is more like a desktop replacement than a laptop. It is -by specs and from reading around- heavy. and I mean Heavy. Don't go expecting to carry it around school / uni / work comfortably.
"Labelling this colossus a desktop replacement tells only half the story. At 436 x 322 x 53mm and with a starting weight of 5.41kg, the M18x is only four legs short of replacing your actual desk. Factor in a 1.54kg power adaptor and your back will spasm just contemplating lugging this titan around LAN parties." From here
So that's near enough 7kg for the starting build, i.e. the one with the lightest weight (and probably lowest power) components. And I don't know what you think of things, but 7kg is pretty heavy to have sat on you lap and carrying around - which is really the point of laptops, portability.
On the specs side of things, I'd say yes you could run stuff maxed out with little to no problems for the next few years at the least, depends how much of a graphical breakthrough there is in a year or so time.

i can't see some kg as a real problem, and Kelfryn said he or she just wants the best portable computer for videogames ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
Yep, I guess weight probably isn't an issue, but there is the consideration that you can't expect to take it for walkies all the time - you need a socket for anything more than 20 minutes of battery life in game and IMO, it's a waste of money to spend that much on a laptop that has a maximum range of a few metres from the socket and weighs loads when you need to move it.
You / read: Kelfryn should just buy a desktop for the majority of the cost of the m18x then buy a cheaper laptop that still packs a bit of a punch for when you need to game on the go - something with say an i5 and a less power hungry GPU set up.

of course i agree (see also my previous post above)

7k? Seriously? Dude get and 1080p 3D TV and XBOX 360 + PS3 and bunch of games.

Really expensive, If u really want a laptop for games, buy Asus Rog Series. Asus Rog > AlienWare. Alien ware is more beautiful, but Asus Rog is more cheaper with same configuration, check it yourslef. 1 year ago, i decided to buy a laptop (because i need move all time), and i need one that can play decently, finally after check a million of configurations and specs, Asus rog G53Jw was the best for me. Now there are other new series and configs. Im really happy with my laptop :)

Finally someone with a legit discussion and who understands the purpose of a laptop and isn't (hurr durr get desktop). I have stayed away from asus though because a friend of mine had one before and it broke with the warranty on it still and they refused to fix/replace it

Better rework your hardware lineup and buy something for 2k, keep the other 5k FOR DA GAMEZ!
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, im a gaming enthusiast aswell, but Ive spent for my pc like 600€! And im able to play any game on maximum settings.

I have a bunch of friends who own M18x's, they're heavy as fk, even the charger is a brick. Though they use the laptop for on-the-go video editing for film projects because its got good horsepower for rendering.
Ask yourself, how much are you going to be travelling with this "laptop", actually its more of a portable desktop (wrote portable for lack of a better word). If you're just gonna be sitting at home picking out lint from your belly button and playing Crysis 14 you might as well get a desktop.
This isn't really a computer you take with you to Starbucks.

Am I the only one who thinks the following : Troll?
Comment has been collapsed.
not worth it for 7k. There are laptops with better specs for less. Look at e.g. Acer, iirc they got something like what you have there but with 16GB RAM for ~2k..
But anyway, @those who think laptops aren't made for gaming: Why do you think companies like Alienware started selling GAMING laptops? They are pretty powerful compared to their size and the thing why people buy them is because they want mobility. Mobile + relatively powerful = gaming laptop.

So I will be acquiring a new laptop (probably next month) and these are the current specs for it
Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit
3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3920XM (8MB Cache, up to 4.1GHz Overclocked*)
8GB Dual Channel XMP DDR3 at 1866MHz
1.5TB SSD RAID 0 (3x 512GB SATA 6Gb/s SSD)
Dual 2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 680M - SLI® Enabled
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2230 With Bluetooth 4.0
Slot-Loading Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
Its a alienware m18x (hate on alienware yatta yatta idc)
Question is are these specs do you think enough to run games on maximum settings for the next 3 or so yrs. Also what are some good accessories I should get with it
Edit:
Anyone who says get a desktop I pretty much stop listening to. I don't think you even understand the concept of a laptop
