You sure you didn't play 30 hours straight, and your body wanted to tell you something?

Some people do suffer from such problems in first person games, and the Portal series can be a problem with how you can be thrown around by some of the puzzles.

So no, you aren't alone.

I don't have problems with it myself, but I've heard of people that do. Actually, my mother does.

TotalBiscuit would say it needs an FOV slider :)

Can you change FOV in the console?

i think so. a friend of mine also gets sick playing Portal 2 so he looked in to it and when we played he told me he uses the console command "cl_fov XX" and changes it to 75 so xx=75

or you could try adding a launch option "Right-click Portal 2 in Steam > Click 'Properties' > Click 'Set launch options'. In this you can put your cvar as a launch option, so (including the dash) put in -cl_fov 75"

but i'm not sure if either work, never tried it myself

When you feel sick, quit playing and get some fresh air. Then continue some other time. You will get used to it. Or simply don't go all crazy with your mouse. I tended to have trouble playing Half-Life 2 but it after some time the sickness didn't occur anymore.

I have problems with all games with narrow FoV (<85°). Try checking the settings and set it a little higher.
If it's only a matter of disorientation, try visualizing the jumps you're about to do before doing them, should help your brain. :)

Motion Sickness due to Field of View

Thanks for posting this video. I'll check it out soon. I've always wondered what the big goddamn deal with FOV was, because it doesn't affect me at all no matter what. But every time I ask I just get "because PC games need FOV sliders".

I had the same problem in PC portal 2. Then I learned about Fov but there is none in Pc version at least. That was when I realise I was playing it in 1600x while it should be 1920x. Don't know if it did anything but there was no motion sickness for me after that. 1600x was default and never bothered to check till i tried to find the fov slider.

I guess what you are experiencing is the opposite kind of motion sickness you can get when on a boat or even a car.. in these cases, the problem is that your brain gets confused by feeling a motion it cant see.. thats why on a boat its best to get on deck and watch the waves and in cars its better to sit in the front or even drive yourself. In games its the reverse problem: You see a motion but cant feel it. Like on boats or in cars, some people are more affected than others and some aren´t affected at all.

In most cases, its helps to either activate or deactivate the V-Sync. Changing the FoV might also help, as mentioned by knsys. You can also try to change the brightness of your screen (darker or lighter, both might help) or try get higher or lower frames per second (once again, both ways might work for you). If all else fails, try to play on a friends PC to see if its better there.. might be that you need another monitor.. or you can try to train to focus your eyes "the right way" when moving the camera around.. you could also try to slow down your mousespeed (in Portal its something you can live with, I guess ^^) or use a Gamepad to get more pleasent camera-movements.

Same here. For example, I'm having big probles with Bethesda games (like Fallout 3), I feel nauseated after even a few minutes. At the same time, I had abosulutely no problems playing Left 4 Dead, even after a couple hours straight.
