No Man Sky was funded by Sony. How in the world does that make it indie?
Comment has been collapsed.
only the marketing
You make it seem like that is nothing. Games live or die based on their exposure and Sony helped make sure that peeps thought this was gonna be the next big thing. You do remember how bad the hype machine was for that game no? Peeps lost their shit at peeps who just reported delays, not caused them.

I give away indie and bundle games, however I try and giveaway games I either enjoyed personally, or that have good reviews, thus leading me to believe people actually enjoy the game. Personally, I enjoy a lot of indie games myself, and I'm not a graphics whore, I can appreciate various art styles in a game with good mechanics or stories. Now as for collecting games, I have some junk on my account I probably should not have gotten, but now when it comes to buying and winning games, I only go for stuff I intend to play at some point, that I think I'll actually enjoy. Sometimes I end up disappointed, but more often then not, I'm happy.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.
No seriously, someone might take them because they like them for real, someone might take them because they like them like how other peoples like bad movies for fun and yeah, some people surely take them just to have them. Also some of these games have trading cards, which can be sold for real money (not much, but well).

Regarding piracy and as an answer to OP:
Dear OP, let me tell you a story of my past.
While I was in my teenage years and still in school and even while I was in my apprenticeship, from time to time I was very surprised to find complete games on my harddrive that someone must have put there without any knowledge of me while we were at a LAN-party or something else. I was still young and didn't delete the games. Which, again, I had no idea how on earth they were on my harddrive in the first place.
But when playing those games I always knew that I am enjoying a product I got for free, although it was not officialy given away for free.
So after I graduated from university and got a job that pays me decent money, I finally took the time to clean up my harddrive and removed all those games. Since that time I made sure that these thing won't ever happen again and I always pay for my games. Hell, I even bought 90% (or even more) of all the games which in the past were miracolously found on my harddrive. Sometimes games I really like and where I want the developer to be succesful I even buy on multiple platforms while they are on sale to support the developers (For example, I own Dragon Age: Origins and The Witcher 1 three times each).
Why, you ask?
Because as soon as I was old enough to understand that those developers spent money to make the games I enjoy I realized one thing: If the majority of people don't pay for games, the developers of such games will no longer earn enough money to even make these games in the first place. Because developers are human beings as well: They have to pay their rent, they have to eat, drink, support their family and so on. Being a developer developing games is what they do as a job and their wages are directly tied to us, the people, buying their games. No games bought => no income => developer stops developing games and does something else to live => no more games.
The same can be applied to anything else that costs money: Music, Films, Books, everything a person creates and then sells to support his income with it is directly connected to privacy.
Now, after all this (maybe eye-opening) general talk, let's get specific.
You are from RU-CIS region. You hardly come across a cheaper price for a legally bought game as for how much it is sold in that region. I know that the average income in that region is a lot lower than in my country, but still, if you do the math, you can buy games for a much lesser price than I or nearly everyone in Europe or a US citizen etcetc. have to pay for their games.
And before you say anything else, yes, I do have people I know that are living in the RU-CIS region.
So I come to the conclusion that it is a mentality thing with guys like you. You could pay for a lot - let me stress that - A LOT of games that are sold in your country and thus earn them legally. But you deliberately choose not to. This, I can not grasp. If the games were as expensive as they are in my country and your average income would stay the same, sure, I could completely understand that. But they are not.
So I am pretty sure that it is a mentality thing, the lifestyle you chose, maybe even the attitude towards "the western world". At least 80% of all the people I blacklisted are some form of rule breakers from RU-CIS region. Whenever I see that one of my winners is from the RU-CIS region, the first thing that crosses my mind is: Oh no, I will have to re-roll the giveaway and blacklist the user. And in approx. 90% of all cases this thought will come true. And I act accordingly.

On your last point, it's important to consider why RU-CIS prices are lower. Most citizens could not afford games if they weren't adjusted for currency rates. They seem like incredibly low prices, but it's relative if you earn less money (and that money in turn is also worth less).

Thank you your answer. I also stated that in my posting. And you are right. If you calculate the average income to the prices in the RU-CIS Steam store, yes, it stops looking so cheap. But those prices are still cheaper than those in other countries, if you compare the average income of that country to the prices in the corresponding steam store.
There is no such thing for Steam, but the "Big Mac Index" shows what I mean.

Nope. That price difference is only there to try to steer them towards legal purchases instead of piracy; Russia is still among the top 5 countries in terms of software piracy rating (although not as bad as SEA, where even governments and banks use pirated software). Same with China. Countries with much lower income have much higher price tags, because they are not big enough markets to try to bother with them, even if the profit rates from the Russian store are low as hell. If you want a country where the games are cheap because of poor people, then look at the Indian Steam store.

Interesting, I did not know there was an additional discount on top of the currency exchange.

Well said! I encourage everyone to pay for their games/music instead of downloading the -free- ones. I understand it if someone said they want to -try- it before buying a game but come on, those developers spent days and nights making those games for us, the least thing we do is paying for it as we enjoy playing it.
I've also bought Dragon age and Witcher two times XD on PC and PS3 for DA and PS4 for Witcher. If you ask me why I'm buying them multiple of times, I'll tell you that I enjoy playing it either on PC or PS
And I still buy my music
P.S to the OP, not all the indie games are -shit- some of them are amazing! and not all AAA games are masterpiece :/
@AmanoTC whitelisted you because you deserve it ♥

I'll be brief. I buy only games that I LOVE. For example - I have 200 games, almost half of them are my favourites, i bought them for my collection. and half of them are dull and boring and sometimes really shitty. The question is - why would I pay for ok games, that are not great? I don't want them to be in my collection and I'll forget about them after one walkthrough. IMHO, you just download that, make one full walkthrough, then forget about it. Why would i buy it, if a man with 1500 dollars per month is considered rather well secured? I had a nice salary (for my country, lol), but then i've lost it. Buying every game is only for really rich people, even in EU-US. For example - Torment Tides... seems to be ok, but it's short and it's not worth the money. Pirate it. If you have a lot of money - buy every game, that you'd like to try. Man, I'll be just happy for you, that you are so secure and cool =) I'd like to try a lot of games and buy only the best (so that developers could be rich enough to make another game, yes)

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich... that--that's about it.

I'm aware- but the topic was pork which, as far as I'm aware, can't be extracted from echinoderms. :P
And even if it could, it'd still take a strong stomach to be willing to eat a sea cucumber. :X

We can call it sea-pork ?
Just like tuna is nick-named "the chicken of the sea" ?

these sea cucumbers look quite edible to me
That's terrifying.
Just like tuna is nick-named "the chicken of the sea" ?
As far as I'm aware, only white albacore tuna is, and that because of strong marketing by the brand of the same name. I don't believe it's a very common association otherwise? Besides, it's named that because white albacore vaguely resembles chicken in texture and color, and has a similar mildness of flavor. So we're back to 'how are you planning to extract some degree of pork-like flavor from echinoderms', either way. :P

"Young and Confused" sounds like a band name- specifically, one that covers "The Young and the Hopeless" by Good Charlotte, in a unique musical style blending that of Young and Restless and Young and Heartless, and offering the live performance approach of Young and in the Way.

So what is shit ??, the way you describe it you seem to consider all indie games shit... From my experience there are tons of excellent indie games available. Of course there will be many less worthy, but that is for everyone to decide on their own. Besides no one is forcing anyone to enter a giveaway for a game they don't deem desirable and in many ways should normally not enter a giveaway unless they actually want that game.
Plus don't confuse things, some games may be "freely available" by many means, but that does not make them free. Without even talking about the fact that some people don't pirate games, many don't want the risks that come with pirated games (and there are risks involved).

Q. Why people giveaway indie shit?
A. Typically the amount of giveaways is a reflection of how many times a particular title was bundled across different platforms.
Q. Is it so tough to use torrents to download shitty games in US and EU?
A. Some people see any torrents as stealing, even if it was given to them from a site like Humble.
Q. Why people struggle winning shit?
A. Most people only enter what they actually want to play, even though there are a ton of people entering those also. I tend to only enter Giveaways from my Wishlist.
Q. Why try winning them?
A. Some people like the satisfaction of winning and game and playing it, others might just want to play it for the cards, and the rest might just want it as a +1 for their collection.
Q. Why people collect shit in steam?
A. Typically those are the power users that are trying to climb the steam leaderboards for either crafting or collections.

"Is it so tough to use torrents to download shitty games in US and EU? Why people struggle winning shit? Shitty games (even AAA+) could be downloaded for free. Why try winning them? I like to keep a collection of cool games. I even had 200+ discs, but i had them recycled. Now I'm collecting games on steam. Why people collect shit in steam? Do they think "I'll get everything that is free" or "I like to collect thousands of games, no matter of their quality" or what?"
If I'm understanding you correctly, your problem is with the people who are taking in crappy indie games. I'm not going to condone that piracy is the answer to bad games. The worst you can do to bad indie game developers is to not buy their games. I do believe bad indie developers are giving indie development a bad taste. There have been and still are, good quality indie titles out there. Titan Souls, BIT Trip Runner, Cave Story, World of Goo, Super Meat Boy .etc are gems in their own right. It's just there's an overwhelming sea of bad ones being shoved out into the marketplace and flooding the trading sites. It's a quick money grab and they know it.
In some cases, that's a good thing, because we can farm their trading cards and profit off of them. We don't have to care about the game itself, stinking up our space and libraries.
It's a bad thing because there's little that can be done to filter them. I mean, what can you do, really? Everything is being done to the best of their ability. There's sites out there, like Indie Gala, who practically absorb most of these games and bundle them up.
Everyone has tastes, though personally I too would be questioning someone's habits and tastes if I saw them with bad indie titles. They're going to be around us whether we like it or not. Just best to not give them money and what's really wrong with sharing these games anyways? I've bought that $1 46 game bundle twice on Bundle Stars. There's no way I'm gonna play a single one of those games, but I'm thinking of giving them out eventually.
However, my problem only is when people expect those games to get better games in exchange. I know, I did it too. Thinking games like fricken Turbo Pug was gonna get me Killing Floor 2? Ha ha, no way.
Anywho, done here.

Even if I really don't give a shit about indie or shitty game in general (I enter some of them), I have to admit that the last 1$ bundle with 40/50 games in it just flooded SG....
At least it gave point to enter all my wishlist.
