Well they would only catch the very stupid ones who have not a tad of knowledge about the internet.
However, that would be good for people in some countries I guess as they would have to fear no legal actions. In some countries those "honey pots" are not allowed as it counts as abetting a crime.

Well I'm not talking about them putting out fake torrents order to catch people pirating and charge them with a crime, no legal action or anything. I'm just talking about sending them out with viruses and shit to fuck over the people trying to steal their game.

Problem with that is that if they did trap pirates with malware, they'd be guilty of giving people malware and could be sued for damages.
It's like how you can't pre-emptively punch a person you think was going to take your wallet. Since the other guy never actually gets around to do anything wrong, you become the asshole.

if any respectable company did that they'd have a ton of hackers up their ass in minutes, and the only people that would lose out are the legitimate users as their services would suffer, i don't really believe pirates hurt anyone they just take the tax that companies should be paying and often paying avoid via loopholes and such.

Yarr... Me computarr seems to be infected! GTArr 5 for PC was just a scam...

This happens every time a big game hits, its the norm.
Survival of the smartest, whoever downloads that sorta deserves it...

Its more rare on private, mainly because those people don't get way with it.
Been using torrents before 99% of the population knew about them, the old sites were really wonky...

Tipically....
But this is because of the terrible prices in some games( I mean no in steam because of the offers xd)
For that the piracy will exist forever or ... well..will exist for the time when the companies not do a change about their prices...
And... download one game that is not even announced for one platform is the worst form to fail in a virus lol
PD: For the people that say this is for the ones who not have console to play it in it... I have to give to them one bad notice the consoles can be pirated too...

Gaming is the most affordable media there is, on certain games averaging well under a dollar per hour of entertainment. The prices are fine for the most part, though the dlc nickle and diming can be a problem.
People pirate because they are jackasses, plain and simple.

"People pirate because they are jackasses, plain and simple."
Not entirely true. Money is an issue for many pirates.
I know many gamers who onced pirated and now buying games instead because they can afford it (including myself).
Comment has been collapsed.
That was me as well. When I didn't have money, I did. When I got a job after searching for one forever, I bought myself the games I had gotten before. It's as simple as that.

People pirate because it's easy and the chances of consequences happening are almost nil. A person won't download a game or any other media just for the sheer purpose of upsetting the author. It reminds me on that "you wouldn't download a car" thingy.
And basically, for some bands "piracy" is actually a good thing as it spreads the word and makes it more accessible. Some bands actually (jokingly) consider themselfs merch / shirt stores who happen to make music.
There is more than meets the eye.

theirs no justification for charging $30 dollars or more for a game, its greed pure and simple and so long as companies are greedy some consumers will consider it easier to pirate. its a victimless crime despite attempts to portray it otherwise, painters gotta paint, singers got to sing and programmers got to program its part of who they are and being poor just means they spend less time on it, i buy my games but i wont spend more than $5 or so on a single title i can wait for the inevitable discounts and sales

Sure there is. Making a AAA game is expensive and requires the work of sometimes thousands of people to write story, create textures, write code, play test, design the game environment/engine and so on. To some people, not you of course, a game is certainly worth its retail price and more. Terraria, Fallout 3/NV, Elder Scrolls series, and so on are good examples gamed that are worth more then their retail price to some people and still come out as cheaper dollar to entertain hour.
Doesnt mean EVERY game is worth the retail price... or half its retail price... or 1/10th is retail price... but there are some, and Im willing that some day you might sit down and think, "Damn, I really loved that game, and would have been completely happy paying full price if it meant there was a chance to see more in the series or genera made."
edit
Of course, getting a great deal on a great game is that much sweeter though.

Dude, do you even know what $60 for a game is when your monthly wage is around $200? A case for quite a lot people around here. Not to mention that distributors don't even sell at $60 and they often put some higher price to justify their 'business' which naturally isn't big due to the low demand. So yeah, basically almost no one is legal here due to these reasons, not because they are jackasses, plain and simple.

I pirated games because I couldn't buy it myself, they are kind of expensive, now I have a job and discovered steam and they amazing sales, so I'm able to buy games

Even with things like this happening often, I still can't stop laughing. Sheer brilliance.
edit: Curious though - was the download actually 18 GB or just marked as so? And if so, how much was filler vs actual malware? I could only imagine what sort of hell a full 18 GB of malware would be.

Gee, a lot of you guys sure are being completely unsympathetic with this whole thing. Most "bad" pirates- as in the ones who can buy games and afford them but are abusing piracy to get them for free- are likely informed enough to not fall for this scam. So my best guess is that the people getting their PCs infected are mostly kids, people who can't afford games and generally people who aren't into gaming all that much (yet). Do you think they follow gaming news much? Some of them probably do but what about the thousands who don't and for them that's just another game that "came out"? Sure, actually filling in that survey is non-excusable retardation but for those that caught up and didn't fill it, they're still already infected and have to go trough the trouble of getting rid of the malware. All in all, in the end a lot of innocent people are gonna get affected by this and the scammers likely won't get caught (and if they do get caught what possible punishment could anyone do to them?). A lot of potential future gamers who were just starting off might give up gaming completely after this (I sure as hell know that if I'd have fallen for anything like this back when I was starting off with games my mom would have made a huge hissy fit and used it as an argument as to how "games are bad".).
How is this any good?! -.-

Your response is a little overboard. It's just PC malware, it's not like their family is being shot up or something.
I think distributing malware to people who attempt to steal a dev's hard work is a fitting punishment.

What do you mean? Hell no I don't have no kids yet

Trying to download a pirate version of Grand Theft Auto V for PC. The one that doesn't exist yet. Instead, they get malware and then fill surveys to try and get their key.
