Booster packs: Booster packs are additional cards for games that will drop periodically. Anyone who has collected all the trading card drops they can for a game and have used Steam in the last week may receive one of these booster packs. These packs contain three additional cards for the game, and may contain foils. If you receive a booster, you will get a "1 new item in your inventory" alert.

Game Collector Badge: There's a new badge which will grant you XP based on how many games you have in your Steam library. This badge replaces the "100 XP for having at least one product registered" message at the bottom of the badges page.

Profile Game Count: The number shown next to the "Games" link on the new profile should now more closely match the number of games shown in the Steam library.

(Possibly) upcoming trading card games

A little Steam trading cards FAQ:

Note: Most questions are already answered in the official FAQ

Q: How many / Which Steam games drop cards?
A: See official FAQ, though this thread seems a bit more complete ;)
You can also use the advanced options in the Steam store search

Q: How many cards does game X drop?
A: Each game drops 50% (rounded up for odd numbers) of the total card number, it's also part of the official FAQ.

Q: What cards / emotes / backgrounds / arts are available for game X?
A: See either steamcardexchange.net, Steam Trading Cards Wiki or SG TC Art Collection (discontinued)

Q: What are Mystery Cards and how do I get them?
A: It's not sure what they do, but you can get them from crafting badges since the latest updated (July 3rd) more info
Edit: Mystery cards turned into Steam Summer Getaway Trading Cards on July 11th.

Q: What are Steam Summer Getaway Trading Cards?
A: Summer cards FAQ

Q: So now I know how to get cards, but how do I get backgrounds / emotes / XP to level up my Steam account?
A: By crating a badge (a full set of cards, see official FAQ)

Q: I've hit my card drop limit, how do I get more cards?
A: You don't. The only way to get more cards is by trading or buying them on the market. Exception: TF2 and Dota2 - you will get one more card drop for every $9 spent on the ingame store. However there are plans to improve this (see next Q/A entry).
EDIT: The recent update (June 18th) introduced Booster Packs

Q: Where are my TF2/Dota2/Warframe/other F2P trading card game cards?
A: You only get the cards for those 2 F2P games, if you either were TF2 premium or bought something from the Dota2 store before the beta started. Now you have to spend money in the ingame store to get card drops. For a more detailled information you should check out the games "How do I earn card drops?" link on your badges page or visit the game forum.

Q: Will I get card drops of game X, that's supposed to drop cards, if I don't own the game but play it during a free weekened?
A: Nope, Valve is not stupid, no freebies for you.

Q: How much is my card worth?
A: Check the market, the prices are changing all the time, depending on supply and demand - simple economics.

Q: I have a question that's not answered in this FAQ.
A: Well, that's not a question per se, but chances are your question is already covered in the official FAQ.

I liked the idea, but the implementation is very badly thought through

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, the implementation is so bad that you almost have to assume Valve did it that way just to rake in marketplace profits.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, yes, it's obvious that it's just a huge cash-grab. But many people realise this, and i think the system will not be accepted because of this

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The system is already accepted. There are people who defend and praise it. Criticism is met from both sides with (the practical, but not problem addressing,) "If you don't like it, just don't bother with it."

The funny thing is that if it had been EA or Microsoft doing the exact same thing, it would be skewered pretty much everywhere online.

Comment has been collapsed.

To me it looks like only hardcore Steam fans like this concept, and not even all of them. If that's true, there is no real incentive for game developers to create cards and thus this system will die over time if Valve doesn't make it more appealing. I could be mistaken, though

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm pretty sure there have been a few copies of those 4 mentioned games sold within the last hours, purely because collectors want those cards.

So much for "no incentive for game devs".

I'm pretty sure that's the reason why more and more indie game devs are jumping on that bandwagon (see the reddit thread).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I know, but don't you think this behaviour is limited to hardcore Steamers? On top of that, it's most probably cheaper to by the cards directly (At least if it's possible to get the badge without owning the game). But however, i think this behaviour will decrease over time. Now it's new, fresh, and limited to only a few games. When there are 100+ games with cards, only the most popular, best and cheapest will be bought. And that was already the case before the TCG-Update

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

When you buy card there are two fees in price. One is Valve store fee. Other is GAMENAME fee - that suggest each sold card means money for game developer/publisher.

Funny thing is I have a ( Sort of ) good portion of the games on the list but only one I have bothered to play was TF2 since joining in the thing. Not sure if I am really not doing it out of laziness or simply just not as interested in the card thing as I originally thought..

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You don't need to "play" them, just run them, get the cards, sell them to people who care about them and get the store credit.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Lol, am i the only one who sees this as a way of getting money on steam wallet...?

I can easily make ~30€ right now if i sell my tf2 item promotions along with the card, given that valve will take a part of the deal, value already surpassed 40€ with minimum value on each item, if they keep doing this i'll eventually reach hundreds of euros by selling cards, el oh el!

And before someone comes here and post the word "collect", i'll slap your face for being stupid. Why would i care about e-peen? I'm going to make profit from these and eventually buy steam games in exchange. So, yeah.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"collect"

Sorry I had to do it :P Honestly.. I thought about perhaps getting all for one of the badges.. but I admit I have sold most of the cards I have gained thus far :P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Even though you said it, you got the right moves on you. E-peen is for loosers.

Rather buy games than craft badges for steam level, i crafted two so far and i don't plan on crafting anymore. Both were experiments and i sold everything back in the market.

Whenever I feel cheap for playing a game just to get some free money in my Steam wallet, I just remember that it's the community that's providing the cash. Whatever games I buy are still payed for with real money, so the devs still get what they normally would.

Awesome. Going to re-install the ones I have. 4 drops (per game) as usual, right?

Actually, I got 5 from Faerie Solitaire.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's half the total cards a game has. Borderlands 2 has 6 cards, so you get 3 drops. Faerie Solitaire has 9 cards, so 4.5 drops rounded up to 5.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

While I enjoy collecting cards but these games, on the first look, have poor artistic value. i remember how hard it is trying to collect CS:GO cards and then doing the craft --> BAM --> you got the worst, the ugliest possible background for your profile, the type that even if you want to sell, hardly anyone want to buy it.

--> So i gave them away for free.

Seriously ! Getting cards are one thing but the reward is just a little bit off.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thats why I just sell them, got over 10 bucks so far for just letting games run minimized :-D. I really could car less about backgrounds, but some like it so win win right?

Paid for half of Payday2 CCE with the first series of cards.

Anyway, if there's a background you'd really like you can just buy it off the market with your profit. Still cheaper than crafting if you don't care about the badges.

Waiting for such events is not really the fastest. One event would give like 100 exp max? That means it would take years to reach level 10.

As long as they keep it as a "pay2win" and not "play2win" this trading cards thing is pointless unless you want to get some extra $ which is always good.

Permalink

It's actually "pay2win" AND "play2win" at the same time, yet a lot of people are idling and don't care about playing the games at all (even if they could get the cards in 1-2 hours).
