isaac + dlc question

I already owned the base game, and I entered the key from the HIB.
Apparently I own the dlc now, but when I try the key again it doesn't say "Duplicate key" or whatever.
Is it used up because I received the dlc since they're both tied to the same key?

Sorry for the stupid question; I tried using the forum's search function but I didn't find a specific answer. =(

Yup, it got used and should have granted you the DLC. You don't get an extra copy of the base game.

Its used the base game and dlc were tied together, you owned the base game so you did not get an extra copy but you got the dlc as you did not own it.

Yes, it's used. You can't use only half the key, unfortunately.

As a followup. If you own a game already Steam won't let you know if the key is a duplicate. It just asks if you want to install the game. I'm not sure on this but I think it's an intentional tactic to discourage key trading by Valve.
