Clicked the link, skimmed through super quickly.

This isn't about GTA modding being made illegal, it appears to be more that this "OpenIV" program was acting as a vector for other stuff that may not have been just harmless modding. At least, thats the impression I get from one posters quote of :
"Is this because the gta online updates getting leaked the moment they're on their servers and they get pried open with openiv?"

I can see how a game with an active online component would challenge such a publicly available modding tool. It's a shame given its uses seem genuinely well-intentioned, but back when I played GTA5 online it wasn't unusual to bump into a few blatant server-ruining hackers per session. I'm not sure which games OpenIV touches on, but if it's any of the modern ones that still have commercial interest, it doesn't surprise me too much.

Shame about the takedown letter. I wonder if they could have handled this more gracefully and maybe even worked with the OpenIV folks to find a middle-ground or something?

Yeap, it seems to be about the "OpenIV" though one can say that it also shows what's T2 stance on the modding scene.

Thought it might also be a way to reduce the hacking in GTA Online though at this point if somebody wants to just fuck around he/she might need to check out Just Cause 2 MP.

Their claims dont mean diddly squat. Legally then can block people from online play but even that's not entirely set in stone.

The only thing stopping someone modding a game is an EULA/TOS and those aren't legally binding.

The same applies to modding consoles. Once you've bought the hardware you can pretty much do what you like with it and all Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo can really do is lock you out of their respective online ecosystems. Pirating games to go along with modded systems which is admittedly the primary reason for modding a system is a separate issue.

TL;DR Modding games and/or hardware isn't illegal but what you do with it afterwards may well be.

Rockstar =/= Take Two. Rockstar openly endorsed mods, TT is the big brother behind it.

I predict this will be back up soon. They tried to shut down FiveM, which allows people to run private servers with mods, and it didn't stay down long.

Welp, GTA V is no longer on my wishlist.

Screw Take-Two for thinking customers are freeloaders because they don't pay microtransactions and declaring modding illegal for their games on PC.

Take Two did it, owner of R and publisher of GTA 5. And yet half of the reviews lashes out against R just as much if not more than for TT. Nice community :D

It would always hurt more Rockstar than the publisher.
They are officially done with GTA V and in the mean time they already do a crap ton of money with 2K cesspool

As unbelievably stupid as these guys at Take Two are, I imagine their greed over how bad their audience took this and expressed in their review will play a part in some level of reversal soon. Still don't know if that will even improve TT's situation, this was what you would call a MAJOR fuck up.

Whatever Take2 are feeding people ,are nothing but lies, its just business.
They agreed with Rockstar that a modding community would help the game longevity, and at no point did they give 2 shits on who was playing nor how, if anything Rockstar was the one who aggressively banned any sort of cheaters.
They decided the game is running its course, and soon want to redirect your attention to future Rockstar games, in fact we might be less than 2 years away from another GTA

"OpenIV, Liberty City in GTA V and all other mods/projects from my team and me are only specific for Single player. Rockstar must be well aware about the fact that you cannot access GTA Online while you have installed OpenIV, The statement "Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody", is just wrong and they know it. OpenIV does not allows or supports any kind of GTA Online mods. We always supported Rockstar in their right to protect GTA Online from hacks and cheats. But, Take-Two's C&D was specific for out Singleplayer mods and have no mentions about GTA Online."

I've read it now and have a question. I wanted to buy GTA V and eventually play online via GTALife. Is this affected, too? I know some people who are modding there.

lol... sad thing, after this i don't want to buy it... dear take two, better keep your digital copies
all the games going in that direction... good old days when devs don't take money after his own map packs, mods, models, and modders can do everything.. (thumbs down for that brand new shitty game industry)

Check out the steam store page for GTA V, the huge amount of negative reviews recently on the game for both the cease and desist TT put out as well as their opinion on how they are supposedly not putting enough micro-transactions into GTA Online is about to put the game into "mixed" reviews. Was 74% on 6/16, now 71% on 6/17 morning Original review about a month ago was nearly 80%. Hell of a boycott.
