What standards do you personally use (not looking for a dictionary definition or generalized statement) to decide when a game, or anything else for that matter, is overrated as opposed to just being something popular that you don't like as much or possibly at all? Or are they the same thing?

It is mostly used as a "People like this and I don't. My opinions are universal truth. These people are wrong."

I wouldn't know when anything is 'properly' overrated though. I don't think it exists.

That was pretty much what I thought too but I wanted to see if anyone had a different idea.

Yeh, pretty much. There are plenty of games/genres I don't enjoy but that's the extent of my opinion about them. To each his own :)

Well, you could say that about any game with a good metascore that you don't like

Praised to heavens by everything and everyone while I find it to be lackluster.

Bioshock Infinite is the first thing that comes to mind. Level design was really linear, weapon limitation for no real reason and 3deep5me story.

For me, it is Hotline Miami. I don't say bad things about it; in the end there is a lot of people who liked the title. So, it's a success. But, i couldn't really see anything great about it.

p.s.: That's not about graphics since i'm another oldschool gamer since 1996.

For me games that don't excel at what they do yet deserve praise as if they did, for example Half-Life 2 compared to Half-Life 1 is dumbed down and rather on improving on it's gameplay Valve made it incredibly easy and focused on it's narrative.

When a game is "rated" higher or "over" what I, and many of my peers, believe it should be. Some games fall flat, especially when they have so much hype and build up (which is common when we announce a game and make it available for pre-order nearly a year before it comes out). The reviewers, they're just as excited as anyone, and getting a short time to cast a full review makes them think it's as great as anything. Then we play it, and after some time the shine dulls and we see it as what it really is, a pig with some make up.

That is overrated.

I really, really don't care if a game is overrated or not. I just play, and enjoy, or not.

Like when a game gets so hyped it automatically gets a 10 on IGN when in fact it is lower.
