So I have a couple of 'steamfriends' that use that stuff to unblock all the achievements. I saw yesterday how a guy barely active on steam had 93% of achievements unlocked, over 14k of them, and 237 games completed... Games that, of course, never have been played.

Now, its just a good topic as anything else to make fun of but I think there is something more on it... I mean, what's the point? You just lost the option to discover a lot of funny things or (more or less) hard or difficult achivements that you can be proud of.

Why people make this? Don't you hate it?

No potato option because... meh... But there is a GA here and its level 3

I like Steam Achievements and tend to not buy games that lacks them. They are good for keeping track on for example how much content a game has. I had no idea that people cheat the achievements, but hope it says something about that in the fine prints of steam user agreement so that they risk losing the game library or something :)

I only ever used a tool to start up a game 100 times that could be otherwise be finished in over an hour maybe 2. Ampu-tea was fun for about an hour but having to star it up a 100 times wasn't going to extend my playtime...it's just to start it up.

Other than that one exception I pretty much spent a lot of time getting certain achievement. I like working towards achievements and if they are Unobtainable that just sucks but cheating for them nah. Not worth it, it's not the same satisfactory you get from it.

I don't understand people who farm achievements by getting a few friends together and just going through the motions to unlock the achievement. I mean if you have fun with your friends, that's fine. But if you are just grinding to unlock the achievement, why not just unlock it and do something fun with your time instead? And on that note, any achievements like 'play 1000 hours', or 'kill 10k enemies', or those that purely luck based, are not achievements in my book and deserve to be unlocked. You are not achieving anything by playing a game 1000 hours if you stopped enjoying it after 30, except wasting your life, which is too short. These 'achievements' are cheap ways to extend the gameplay and should be banned. So if someone wants to unlock them and focus on real content- and skill-based achievements, kudos to them.

Then just don't do these achievements, it's not the end of the world. Why someone has to be a smartass to unlock something with a mouse click?

Why not? If someone buys a game, they can do whatever they want with it.

Therefore, If they can get away with it, that makes it ethical... right?
Also, don't forget all those VAC banned players. They did whatever they want as well...

VAC is different, that's mostly about cheating in online games, which affects other players. I don't have a problem with anyone unlocking their own achievements in their game. That does not affect me in any way.

I honestly don't care what people do with their account... but, in the other hand I really hate the fact that Steam separates cards system from achievements system and also the level system. There's no fun at all or even the rewarding feeling have them separated. That's why I don't care: its Steam's fault.

It would be so awesome if there would be some rewards for achivements. But then again, SAM would just crash it :D

Playfire did that for quite some time, but I guess... every good thing is getting ruined by those 1 mouse click achievement whores...

As an achievement hunter I have to say that it annoys me a bit. I understand that they are pointless and that I'm doing this for me. But if there comes some cheaters and say they are pointless and unlock them all it seems like Hipocrisy to me. I will not use SAM under any circumstances. Not for annoying multiplayer achievements, not for broken ones or for ones which didn't unlock it. If I can't complete a game for those reason I'll just accept it. That said I have two achievements where I changed system clock -_- I wish I had been more patient with those two (and no I won't use SAM to lock them in order to unlock them at the specific date).

Problem ist also that they make it hard to judge how difficult an achievement really is. Normally I would say that every achievement with at least 1 % of people having obtained it is within my reach. Then I found a game (Miracle Fly) which had for most of the achievement around 2,3 %. As I played (and cursed) the game I more and more realized that people cheated them and after checking Astats I was the first (or one of the first since not everyone is visible on Astats) who unlocked them by fair means .....

Exactly!
The stats are ruined thanks to those people. That's more than enough to annoy me.

I don't cheat to get the achievements I want, only because I don't have the motivation to go out of my way and spend time on doing just that. I mean, that's extra work right there. I did looked into SAM the other day though, I was a bit curious, though it's not my thing. If other people does it I honestly don't care. I feel like it's up to the person to have the freedom to do what they want, if they really get so caught up on specific achievements that they so desire. I don't think anyone should be punished for it, no.

It's a thing that bugs the hell outta people, I get that. I too, get those moments. Especially for HOGs that I've finished only to find out that there's an achievement for "watching the first hour of cut-scenes without skipping". It sucks, but I rather give it another try by playing through the same game once more to get that achievement if it really bugs me that much.

I even didn't know it was possible.... pretty sad ;( when I see how I fight to finish the achievements for Dead State.... I even don't think one second to cheat. It takes away all the fun of playing and that's pathetic. But I don't hate, it doesn't concern me in. I'm just sad for those who get there

I have a contact that had 3 gold perks on Killing Floor 1 with 50 hours, NO WAY! I told him about that and he denied the whole deal, he said that sometimes he left the game at idle and sometimes that´s what happens with Steam games, you just level up automatically (blaming Steam). Funny part, during that conversation told me: "I´m so pissed off right now, I received a VAC righ now", and then he blame Steam because he was "moving items" from another account to that one and that those accounts had the same e-mail (Blaming Steam again). Some people just don´t want to admit that they cheat...

Was having fun playing with him but when I saw that in a couple of days from level 1-2 to gold I was like....Ok...

Well the definition of an achievement is "A thing done successfully, typically by effort, courage, or skill."

A program that gives you that isn't done by effort, or skill.

Some people will say "OH but SOME achievements are really really HARD or BROKEN and that's not fair!" Well for the hard ones, that's what makes it an achievement, you don't NEED to do it, so stop being such a wuss c; As for the broken ones, those are so few and far between, trying to use that to justify a program which gives you all of the achievements is like saying "I found one bad apple in this field, therefore we cannot eat any apple anywhere." See? It's idiotic :) Dis is gonna trigger some fools :s

To each their own I say - I don't necessarily mind unless they try saying they earned them or get mad at someone else who did the same.

I will be honest, a long time ago I unlocked TF2 achievements because I wanted to get the items some of the achievements give cause I thought it would be more fun or something.

I don't really care about achievements at this moment, so I never check people's achievements.

But for me, achievements is something you work on hard, that you pour your heart into it, your soul, your time! And everytime you unlock one, you feel something happy inside you. It creates a page in your memories... each achievement tells a story, a romantic tale between you and the game.

That's how I see it, anyway:)

I said I didn't care much about achievements, but I am looking at them more and more these days. I worked hard to 100% one game that meant a lot to me - Rocket League, to kind of say "I love this game, and I completed it 100%".

I'd never cheat for achievements (and I'd cheat for lots of other stuff)

I don't give a shit what my neighbor is doing unless it directly affects me or hurts someone else.
If people spent more time trying to fix themselves rather than everyone around them, the world would be a much better place -_-

I don't really hate it, some people don't care about achievements. Personally I wouldn't cheat since achievements is, in my opinion, a record to see how good I am, so I want it to be legit.

Can't you get banned for cheating achievements (or using SAM in particular)?
Besides that I don't care for achievements, on some games they're cool for giving yourself some kind of challenge/replayability, but that's it.

I would never use some outside software like Steam Achievement Manager for unlocking achievements. But there are a few games where the achievement data is stored in an unencrypted plain text file...
