“I think it’s incumbent on any site owner or community manager to look hard at what they’re expecting volunteer moderators to do, and find ways to either shift their budget to make paid moderation possible or change what they’re doing to reduce the need for unpaid or underpaid moderation labor. It’s important to not exploit the goodwill of your community members by asking them to do unreasonable amounts of uncompensated labor. And it’s important on the flip side to recognize that if you can’t, in an ethically sound manner, provide sufficient moderation for a discussion space to keep it thoughtful and non-toxic, running a discussion space may simply be a bad decision.”

View Results
Yes, in cash (either a set amount or a share of revenue)
Yes, in privileges (or other benefits like points or cosmetic enhancements)
Sure, but only out of donations from users
No, it would be damaging
Potato

I mean Rewards in Points No ,but they can have all cosmetics on the site ,they can build an empire with the community :D
They can get some Moderator only Giveaways .

They can add some small prizes its better than money :D

Overall should mods be paid if its mostly only Support tickets then i think yeah ,but for forum overall no :D

Nah. There are some paid forum moderating jobs, though. But other than that no, not in cash at least.

Depends on the forum/site target, goal and size.

People usually get paid to do work that in turn brings money. That doesn't mean that they can't volunteer, but it's reasonable to expect that if a site makes money for its owner (even if indirectly, such as by promoting something), and if the people who are helping voluntarily help the site get more money (i.e., having them gone would make the site less successful), then it's reasonable to have them compensated.

It's true that a lot of people just like to help their fellows, and that's nice, but I think that if anyone does care to get paid, the above criterion is what should be used. If the site doesn't really make money, then it's fine (and expected) that it won't pay. If it makes a lot of money, it's expected that it would pay. In-between, I guess it should be tried on a case by case basis.
