Welcome to TouhouAuction!

The craziest SteamGifts event that we've organized so far!

The rules

For the next few days we'll organize giveaway auctions. Giveaway auctions will be hosted as SteamGifts threads for all of you to participate in. In each auction thread, a randomized amount of details about the auctioned game will be revealed. Then the initial bid is announced, which is always equal to the SG points required to join the auctioned giveaway (so you can use it as an extra hint).

Afterwards the game starts. You place your bid by replying directly in the thread with your bid amount in the form of whole numbers, for example "100". Every bid has to be greater than the last one, and can't be bigger than a triple of the current one. If nobody places a new valid bid for 2 complete rounds (going twice, and gone), the highest bidder wins access to the giveaway! Such finished auction is then closed as SG thread and we move on to the next one. We might reuse old auction threads for new auctions, see why in FAQ below.

If you happened to win our auction, first and foremost, congratulations! You can claim your prize in the form of a giveaway link on our event website where you'll sign in through Steam to confirm your identity, and access all of your winnings afterwards.

You're free to share all giveaway links that you've obtained from our auctions, be it with your friends, in your groups, or even here in the thread. I'm stating it clearly because it's core part of our game, do whatever you wish with them. We recommend doing it in separate thread so it's on top.

This thread is going to remain open for the entire duration of the event. You're more than welcome to share your opinion and giveaways (if you want to), suggest possible ideas and discuss all other aspects of our little game. Personally I like this idea so much that we might decide to make it a recurring event if everybody has as much fun as we had making it happen. Now fly! To the auctions!

FAQ

How do I join the game?

Simply find the auction that you're interested in and place a valid bid. If you win the auction, the giveaway link is yours! You start with 2500 credits and you may use them to bid any auctions of your choice. Auctions will start in one hour since posting of this thread.

We've also coded a basic overview on our website with real-time updates in case you'd be interested in it.

I posted a bid but nothing happened!

Chill, ArchiBoT checks discussions every 30 seconds to put some rest on SG server. You'll get your response soon! If by any chance the time has passed and you can see other messages being parsed and yours didn't, then very likely you didn't put it as a direct reply to the thread. There is a possibility of small delay if we find some game-breaking bug and need to hotfix ASAP, but we hope this won't be needed!

OK, I posted a valid bid, but bot didn't hear me?

Bot won't hear you if you get outbidded in the meantime by somebody before you in the same "window" (of 30 seconds). You have to be the first one to bid after previous bid gets accepted.

Can I change my mind? Back out?

Editing/deleting comments is valid until we leave you a notice of registering it (you can't back out afterwards). Replies to existing comments are ignored, we honor only direct comments in the thread. If you'd like to discuss some event aspects, please do that in this thread, leave auction threads for a(u)ction!

How do I earn more credits?

You might be shocked, but the only way to earn more credits is to share the giveaways! Wait what? Yes, every winner of the auction collects 5 points from every entry in his/her giveaways. The more entries, the more credits you will have for future auctions!

Wait, so where is the catch? Can I just decide to not share anything and claim all giveaways for myself?

Yes, the giveaway is yours, you can join it and nobody is going to take it from you. But no, if the giveaway gets less than 5 entries then it is a candidate to be re-auctioned in the next batch, effectively making somebody else win the giveaway link in addition to you. This will repeat until the giveaway gets the desired 5 entries or gets auctioned at least 3 times (and therefore won by 3 different people). If by any chance, despite of that the giveaway will still not get 5 entries by the end, we reserve the right to share it publicly with everyone to satisfy this demand.

Now, whether you decide to let just 4 of your friends join the giveaway or allow it to get re-auctioned is entirely your choice. Remember that every single one of those people might freely share the giveaway link further, since giveaway creator (with us as organizers) clearly stated that this is allowed. This is why it might be a good idea to refrain from posting the giveaway link further if you want to claim it for yourself rather than get more credits from it. I mean, it's not like somebody would say no to that sweet MONSTER HUNTER or NieR, right?

When are auctions going to be posted?

Our beloved ArchiBoT will stay on duty day and night for as long as needed to ensure that there are up to 4 ongoing auction threads active at any single point in time, until we run out of all of them that is. Therefore, the answer is, all the time!

How many auctions there will be? When the event will end?

Officially the giveaways are set to end on 11/11/2018, also the 100th anniversary of Poland independence day. We're likely to run out of giveaways to auction before then, so the sooner you join the fun, the more giveaways you can win!

But I need to sleep!

Me too! Well, ArchiBoT won't be able to progress with the auction if nobody places a bid, so if you somehow convince all of SG to wait for you, then it's fine! Otherwise... sleep lightly, you can never know when NieR pops up! :3

Don't you think this is going to be a bit... spammy?

A bit, for sure, but I don't really consider this event to be any bigger pressure neither on SG server, nor on SG community itself. Regardless, I'm not a mod, so I've reached the SG staff through a support ticket asking for feedback. Out of 6 staff members that stated their opinion, nobody raised any concern over technical aspect of our organization, so I believe it's going to be fine. Of course, we'll be monitoring the situation for the entire event duration and take notes, if SG suddenly blows up, I'll know who is responsible for it... :3

OK, but can't you just open new thread for each auction? Those old reused threads look ugly.

I know, this is how it worked before we stumbled upon this issue. If cg responds to my support ticket in due time, we'll continue with new threads, otherwise we need to reuse existing ones. Sorry, SG rules are above me, I hope it's not too much of inconvenience for you ;_;7

Despite of that, everything seems to work correctly, so I suggest to stick with the thread title and the OP for details, you can bid afterwards without even checking where the "end" of the thread is.

Huge thanks to the people that made it happen:

Feel free to discuss all other matters, we'll be happy to answer all your questions, concerns and other event-related messages!

Extra giveaways provided by the community (and exposed auction giveaways) are included in this thread.

What are people bidding? Just numbers? What is there to prevent people from just adding bigger and bigger numbers, ad infinitum? What are these "points" to which you refer?

Everybody starts with 2500 credits, for the majority of people this will be upper limit.

As the time goes, there will be less and less people capable to bid that much, as we have rather limited number of people in SG discussions while having a few hundreds of more potential giveaways. Sure, we won't deplete amount of users, but there won't be 1 new user each 7.5 minutes to keep the train going.

At that point things will likely get interesting, assuming my expectations are correct, because I can't foresee all the outcomes.

Points = credits, I use both words as the same meaning. You can read more in the FAQ above, should answer all your questions.

I read the FAQ, and it wasn't clear. Hence the questions.

You start with 2500 credits that you can spend on anything you want to.

This is the part that could use some editing. I believe you meant to say something like, "You start with 2500 credits and may use them to bid in any auction(s) you choose."

I corrected that part, thanks!

Everyone starts with 2500 credits, you cannot bet more than the balance you own. Until people run out of them it's basically the matter of who gets to bid 2500 first. There are exceptions though

Currently, the bot says (something like) "All your credits are belong to us now." if you bid all your credits. I think that completely ruins one important aspect of auctions – that you never should know if your adversary will come back and overbid you. With this comment, you know that the other person has reached the end of the line. That's no fun :(

Please remove that information leak.

Otherwise, I think this event is great fun! I hope it will repeat and maybe develop more fun ways to participate.

That's just one of many phrases the bot picks up randomly when replying to a bid, there is no further meaning behind.
However, it will tell a user if they are trying to spend more credits than they own, or if they are trying to spend them while being in the lead in another auction and the sum exceeds their credits.

That was just a coincidence and has nothing to do with using all of your points.

1) wait when somebody bid 834 or higher
2) quickly bid 2500
3) ...
4) PROFIT

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, but you have to wait until the bot confirms the bid of 834 before you can bid the 2500 or it won't count. The bot confirms bids once every 30 seconds. Then you have to wait to get enough points back at 5 points per entry to be able to bid on another giveaway which will probably go up to 2500 points for a while. 500 entries on your giveaway will get you 2500 points.

Yep, and this 30 seconds we hardly pressing F5 XD
I didnt win anything yet, and just staying at starting 2500 points, so I dont need to wait. Also it seems like nobody still have 500 entries on his won giveaways.

For about the first 5 hours, the rules were, for every entry in a giveaway you share, you get points equal to the value of the game. This means some people made a lot of points and got to keep them when the rule changed to 5 points. The Shenmue giveaway that Saucisse linked got the person that shared it around 8000 points before the rule was changed and has collected 5 points for every entry since then.

Also, you don't need to spam F5 if there was a recent bid because the bot confirms every 30 seconds and you can figure out when it is going to happen based on the time stamp of the last confirm. Or you can just sync a timer and know the bot will confirm on every 30 second and minute mark.

Not 16 hours, merely 6 and that includes 2h break that we needed to fix threads logic. You're still correct that it should happen earlier though.

And then... SURPRISE!
Something good appears, but you are out of credits, and the giveaway you spent all your points on is for a game that's been bundled so much, you won't even get back a third of what you spent on it... and not all at once.

Right now the event is "whoever shouts 2500 first wins", but later on it will probably become a war of attrition.

1+ Nice idea. Thanks for the GA's
2+ Maybe the homepage should to try to link to the last side of the thread. As example set it to page 300. All under that will lead then to the last site. The people see then, faster as with the 30 seconds bot delay, how high the bids are.
3+ Each one uses, in the end, the highest bid, example 2499p, and the fastest that overbid it, with 2500p, win. All lower bids are in the end only message spam and wasted time. Thats boring and for sure not how it should work.

I hope the constructive critic helps too

2 - Figure out how to link to a comment via it's numerical id (54144822) not alphanum one (iU2Ny9e), or how to link to last page without knowing the thread title, just the id and it'll be implemented :)

That's good catch too - the website updates (no need to refresh) at most 10s after the bot confirms all bets, it may be good idea to track it instead of spamming f5 on SG. If Archi's potato server can handle the load, we may lower the update interval to make it even more up-to-date. Also, by "at most" it means there's good chance the window is smaller.

well some pepole have more than 2,5k points. And later on it is possible, that it will finish at lower point, especially for those ''bundled'' with starting bid 1p :P

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, MAYBE. But till that time is it boring. And maybe the GA's running out before that point is reached. Think on the fact that more and more people will join in the event (all with fresh 2,5k points).
As example i not tried to win a game after the first 2 tries that shown me the "loophole". Its wasted time, it sounds hard but i don't know how i should say it more friendly. It is nothing against the people that made the event and nothing against the event itself. It only don't fits FOR ME in the actual way.

3) Well... let's just say that this isn't exactly how I expected auctions to work, but this can't last too long, as eventually the "2.5k whales" are gonna run out of credits, and they won't earn them back fast enough to keep "2.5k-ing" future auctions.
The only doubt so far is about what will we run out of first, new participants with 2.5k to spend, or giveaways to bid for.

Everybody either has 2500 points or 0 points (except the ~100 people who has won and shared a giveaway), so I don't see the winning bid being anything less than 2500 for a very long time.

I have no idea how many giveaways it would take to "milk" everybody who's taking part in the event, but I don't think it will happen.

Nice idea but bad implemented.
Ppl hoarding GA for hoard more points (as usual). So IMPOSSIBLE to win a dang auction since no matter what number u say they will come up with 2500 and is over and over and over and so on.
Been trying to get at least ONCE for the past 4-5 hs without success.
Another thing is or ppl don't know how to bid or bots/staff maintain bid going higher cause no way if the last bid is 200 and u bid 202 the next one goes 888 :S ....
Like why? What's the point on doing that? not for make a higher number u have better chances or anything, on contrary all u will do is make the next one goes 2.5k and is over.
If NEW ppl joining have 2.5k points the highest bid should be 2k i think.
Ok, all in all event is awesome as an idea, need some fix and details here and there, but a really great and furthermore ORIGINAL idea like Touhou always bring us!

EDIT: some suggestion could be to add a time frame between the bids u can do and if u bid 2.5k u can't do the same in the next one? or if u bid u need to wait 15-20 minutes to be able to bid again or something like that in order to stop hoarding greeding people.

Comment has been collapsed.

Rather than the implementation, I'd say the biggest problem so far is with how the participants decide to play.
Even with all the restrictions that have been added, they keep whaling auctions for 2.5k at once, making them last a few minutes.

Just by taking a quick glance at the event website you'll notice how every single one of the 100+ giveaways auctioned so far, has been won for 2500+ credits. But this cannot possibly last too long, can it?
In fact, it's gradually getting better, auctions still end at 2.5k, but it takes considerably longer to reach that.

some suggestion could be to add a time frame between the bids u can do and if u bid 2.5k u can't do the same in the next one?
or if u bid u need to wait 15-20 minutes to be able to bid again or something like that in order to stop hoarding greeding people.

A "bidding cooldown" would kinda go against the concept of "auction", don't you think?
Not to mention that this would encourage people to bank points waiting for someone else to "waste" their bid.
And if you bid 2.5k and win an auction, then you wouldn't have credits to use in the next one.

well i won 2,5k in first try so don't thing it's so hard.
Personally I made it because I don't have time to watch those auctions but wanted to participate somehow

How many of those are mine? I recall having only 5 active threads, plus one from jbond I asked for having one place for all exposed giveaways.

I do not approve people creating threads for every single one of their winnings, this is what we have jbond's thread for. I don't know why you complain about that in my thread though.

In this case I totally agree with you and I'd also prefer if people didn't do that, it serves no purpose and only further spams the SG.

But sadly I can't do anything with that. Next time I'm going to point it out in the rules so people don't do that. Thanks!

"Someone win it in addition to you"...

For a while, I thought it meant I could keep the GA all for myself (1 entry only), so the game would be all mine, and then another GA would be created for the same game, so another person would win it in addition to me. It sounded very strange, since this would be a huge incentive not to share the link...

...so, ok, I realize now that someone else will win THE LINK TO THE GA in addition to you. I would suggest to make this clearer in the description.

Summarizing: "it"="GA" or "it"="auction/link to GA"? Logically, it must be the second interpretation, right?

Anyway, thanks for organizing the event!

Cheers!

Permalink

Ah, that makes much more sense!
I was really confused about that part as well since, as you said, not sharing the link to a good game would indeed be beneficial to basically everyone participating in this event if it would lead to the creation of another giveaway for the same game.
