Maybe. But The Culling needs something to pull them away from whoever is exploiting them today.

Ahh... yes, you're right. Was recently listening to videos about the atrocious hair change thing in Dead or Alive, couldn't help but think about that first :D

Sorry to hear you feel that way! The way we look at it is this - if you want to play the game, you will be able to again and that wasn't possible before. If you already purchased the game, you can play daily without spending anything. If you'd like to support the game and help keep it alive as long as possible, you can do so by spending a bit more and getting unlimited matches. We hope you choose to come back but if you don't like the monetization plan we understand it won't be for everybody.

So if I recall correctly:
The devs screwed over this game by halting development before it was fully finished, so they could work on a sequel.
The sequel bombed because it was too obviously rushed, disposed of the mechanics that made the first one unique and didn't replace them with anything new. This alienated the original audience, who weren't waiting for the sequel to an unfinished game to begin with. Thus leaving it as a generic competitor in a market that had already been cornered by a few big players, and got overcrowded due to every dev and their grandma jumping in to try and join the profits. (spoilers: That never works. Being early in the market is pretty vital to making it big with The Next Big Thing. Which The Culling 1 could have been, had it been finished).
So the devs shitcan The Culling II in record time (within 2 weeks I believe) to get back to the first game. But that fizzled out because by now most fans of the Battle Royale genre had picked their favorite game and were sticking with that (Oh hai Fortnite!), and Xaviant had built a reputation for being clown-level devs at best thanks to the mess above.
And now they're neglecting to market "Don't Die, Minerva!", the other new game they're working on, because drawing attention to yourself with a new and somewaht strange business model seemed like a smarter move. (well, in this day and age at least. Pretty sure no-one would have batted an eye if they tried this in the mid-90's when online gaming was new and video arcades were still big business)
Also, what I don't understand is why they're not going for a variation on a subscription model instead.
Replace the "1 free game a day" with an "X free games per week" free version that serves mostly as a demo. For the paid version, set up a system with seasonal leaderboards and sell access for a season for a reasonable price (say 10-15 bucks for a 2-month season). Make it a marketing point that you're selling legit Season Passes, which may be a first in video-games.

I just took a quick look at the link provided by proximus; it does seem like there is a subscription model:
"You can also purchase 7-day and 30-day passes and play without limits for $1.99 and $5.99 respectively."
But again, people experience with those devs is very negative so....idk what to think...specially with "pay for the game", ONE free matches daily BUT pay to keep playing.
The low price also makes me think they dont plan to improve the game much or at all. I never played any of those but I watched them on youtube back on the day.

With me, I could never melee correctly in this game. It always felt like the player in front of me could easily throw two punches against my one punch. There was also the case where blocking a punch led to stunning the enemy; there were times when my attacks would be blocked despite the opponent never starting up the block animation. Latency can be an issue to your success.

Looks like they plan(ned) to re-re-rerelease it on PC as well, but I think the game will be dead again before it even arrives.
Maybe they'll go Epic exclusive too, just in case someone is still unsure about what their intentions really are :D

I doubt Epic would let a Fortnite competitor onto their store. Especially an incompetently run one.

Yeah, that's up for debate. I honestly don't think the game can really compete with anything anymore :D

They already have The Cycle which is a competitor.
