(sorry, no GA)
Hey Steamgifts! I have $35 on Steam, and I was wondering what turn-based or strategy games you guys like! I really enjoy the Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Civilization, some of the Total War games, and stuff like that! Any suggestions are welcome!

edit: I now own XCOM! Thank you, minanu!

I've heard endless legend is pretty good, and you've also got all the heroes of might and magic franchise (apart from the shady VII which is an unfinished game)

Quick edit: if you want a semi silly game... the south park one was pretty entertaining :)

I was considering that South Park game a few days ago, but I guess I'll get that next time it goes on sale since I didn't check when the last sale ended. Heroes of Might and Magic V looks pretty good, but is it true that it only works on 2000/XP?

I'm not sure about HoMM V on 2000/XP, but I wouldnt recommend it as a game. It's pretty much the worst one in the series. If you can get over the dated graphics the HD edition of HoMM III is much better.

Also, + 1 for the Endless series (Legend, Space, Dungeon).

I actually think that V is the best of the series, and I have all of them. 7 is currently the worst of the series, as it's a broken mess.

This has been a long time debate, about which one's better. IMHO, I think V is the worst, and I've beaten all of them. But it's all a matter of personal preference. Currently playing III in multiplayer mode with my mates.

V worse than IV...disagree ;)

Like I said, personal preference. ;)

I also think the IV is the best instalment, followed by III then II and I and the original Kings Bounty, which is they predecessor. :)

I don't really like what they did with V and VI and I wont touch VII until they finish it.

Since so many people have suggested this, which is better, Shadowrun Returns or Shadowrun: Dragonfall

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I really like Shadowrun: Dragonfall Director's Cut, but Returns is the first game in the relaunch. They've both been on sale pretty often and I would not be surprised to see them in a Halloween sale since Hong Kong just recently launched not that long ago. The community created content makes the game well worth it's value as well.

Good point about the sales. Is Shadowrun a series where it's necessary to play the games from the start to understand what's going on?

I think Dragonfall is the way to go, some say start with Returns since it was the original game. Reddit has some nice answers about the differences.

I'm warning you, if you come from the days of pen and paper gaming with friends and someone as the GM/DM you may get addicted. Don't ask me why I love this series so much, even though it's a Unity engine it looks great to me and plays amazing!

All 3 installments so far from Harebrained Schemes, as well as Cliffhanger's Shadowrun Chronicles, are stand-alone story-wise.

HBS games are back in the early days of the Shadowrun setting (+/- 2050) and do have a few cross-references & cameos.
Chronicles is set around 2070 and keeps up more with the current version of the pen&paper game.

4X: Endless Legend http://store.steampowered.com/app/289130/
Sci-Fi: Shadowrun HongKong http://store.steampowered.com/app/346940/

The hot stuff right now is Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition http://store.steampowered.com/app/373420/
But it's 40 bucks, needs DX11-compatible GPU and 64-bit OS. (You could also co-op, good controller support and split-screen)

You could also try DIvinity: Dragon Commander http://store.steampowered.com/app/243950/ (currently on humble bundle)
It consist of a few genre, you got RTS and turn-based (Risk-style map) sprinkled with RPG.

It's 2 months until December. If you could hold on until then, I second what Azsassinz has posted.

Xcom, South Park, Darkest Dungeon(Crawler), Dungeon of the Endless (TD/Crawler), Dungeon Defenders (TD), Valkyria Chronicles, FTL, Infested Planet(light strategy, almost casual), Kingdom Rush (TD again)., Prime World: Defenders(TD yet again, damn 'strategy' for being so encompassing)

Sorry, sometimes I have issues separating genre's, especially with strategy. if you think about it, a really tough FPS/3PS on its hardest setting becomes a reflex based puzzle game....

Well, if you haven´t tried it already, I highly recomend the XCOM reboot with the Enemy Within expansion, Can´t really go wrong with that one. If you like more turn based strategy, like Civ, I think Endless Legend and Age of wonder 3 are the best ones. The Elemental games are a series of very ambicious and very broken games from stardock. The Legendary Heroes one is actually decent and I heard good things about the newest one, Socery King. Just don´t bother ith the rest.

If you like a turn based game with more focus on characther and micromanagement, Invisible Inc is a very intesting one. Massive Chalice is also good, and plays more lika a traditional SRPG. Darkest Dungeon is pretty great, also.

Besides that, there´s the Shadowrun ones and the Blackguards.

Permalink

Is XCOM worth it without the Enemy Within expansion? I can't afford both, but I can afford the base game and I'll buy Enemy Within once I get the money if I buy XCOM now

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Enemy Unknown is worth it even without the expansion. To be frank, I don't think the EW expansion is even worth at the current price it's offered.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yep, it really is. But keep in mind that Xcom is a Campaign based game, just like Civilization, when you get the Expansion it adds features and modify the main game, it does not add post-campaign content. Just saying because I often have to clarify thi a lot when I recomend this game.

But Yes, the Base game it´s amazing, the expansion just make irt better, and when you´re done with it, that´s a really nice mod called Long War that put the core game on steroids.

$35 bucks is not much if you want very good games so wait till the next steam sales! Civilization V: complete edition ($12+ bucks on 75% sales)(complete edition for full experience highly recommended) pretty standard turn based strategy game that is easy to learn and play. Heroes of might and magic 3 (not sure if steam hd version is good enough) King's bounty is an rpg like Homm series without the strategy/castle building aspect. (highly recommended if you like homm series and very cheap <10 bucks on 75% steam sales) warlock master of the arcane is like civi game with magic and heroes twist.(very fun and is bundled so you can get it cheaply wtihout buying through steam) For real time strategy game, I love classic like c&c but i have not played any newer one that is available on steam so i wont recommend them. The only real time strategy game on steam that leave the best impression on me is R.U.S.E . I bought it on a steam sales for a few bucks(less than 5) and it feels great like the old classics. Whatever game you buy, try to get them with steam sales at 75% off and you will be able to get 3 or more highly recommended games listed by us instead of buying 1 now. If you cant wait and wish to play some old turn based strategy game, you can check out romance of three kingdom 3 on google, some website offer free game play on website(play the dos version only, nses version sux). (Disclaimer: since those website seems malicious, i wont be linking them and approach with caution. But so far i have dl and play it on dosbox without any problem. If you want to add me and i can link you to the page that you can play on browser).

yeah i have yet to complete the 1st king bounty and have the 1st few too. I spent too much time focusing on getting everything and trying to reduce losses that i got bored and tired of it that i decided to take a break from it. So far i have yet to go back and complete it haha. But still i like it very much so i think i will try and complete it this week since im reminded about it.
