All of these are at all-time lows on Steam. Picked up all of them except Illumination. I heard it's really, really bad so I don't know if I want to bite on that.

Also friendly reminder that THQ Nordic is doing a Digital Showcase later today. A credible leaker has hinted that a new Alone in the Dark game is going to get announced so it's possible it might be at this event (and if not, then maybe at Gamescom later in the month). It's at 12pm PT / 3pm ET for those interested in watching.

Maybe they should do with Alone in the Dark what Games Workshop does with Warhammer 40k - license it as much as possible. I mean, Alone in the Dark is not known for its consistent quality at this point, and there's plenty of young and creative devs out there that would love to bring their flair to the horror genre, especially if it's with a big name like this. It would revive the franchise and, more importantly (for them), rake in the cashz.

Time to experience the classic Alone in the Dark games, I guess. Been wanting to do that for a decade (or two). I wonder how these play these days, probably not great lol. The art style still looks cool though.

Hard to say no for that price, I've been meaning to try the New Nightmare for like two decades. Although I'm skipping on Illumination, it looks way too crappy to bother.
BTW, at what point THQ Nordic bought the Alone in the Dark franchise? Last time I remember it being owned by Atari.

Nice! From the reviews, it looks like the only shitty one is "Illumination" which I'll happily avoid. The original 3 looks good though.

Alone in the Dark 2008 is really bad.

I can play bad games (kind of like cheesy movies). But Illumination is a straight-up buggy mess so I'll definitely avoid it.

Alone in the Dark was a respectable franchise until the 2008 game came along. AitD2008 has bad controls and poor writing and voice acting. I played it for several hours and had to stop. Try at your own risk.

Such remarkable quality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo5d68BGkyw

Alone in the Dark was a franchise that didn't have a sequel for 14 years and barely anybody had heard of it except the old timers who still remember launching games via DOS.

I've also played it for a few hours on XBox 360 I was stupid enough to buy the Collectors Edition because it had a nice figurine 😅 and I'd rather call it unremarkable than bad per se.

Alone in the Dark also had Playstation ports. But I get your point. The franchise had been idle for some time.

A number of horror game series petered out after the 1990s for whatever reason. Alone in the Dark, Clock Tower, Parasite Eve.

If my memory isn't wrong what happened with Parasite Eve is that there were some license issues and that was why the third game couldn't even use the Parasite Eve name and it ended up as a spin-off. On the other hand I think that Clock Tower had a couple of proposed sequels that ended up turning into their own IP during development and they eventually just abandoned the franchise.

It's such a strange beast. You can see there are good ideas and ambition, also in some setpieces, but it's also the clear product of a developer and publisher way out of their depth. For example there's a situation early on were you have to extinguish fire, or use it even as a makeshift illumination - cool! But then it gets recycled to ridiculous scenes of using flaming chairs to touch possessed corpses.

One of the few horror games i always avoided back then, with good reason.

The puzzles and lots of other stuff is just so strange in the games. I believe enemies respawn in New Nightmare, but ammo does not. Can you believe if that would happen in RE games?
