Killing Floor - maybe not technically zombies but rather humans that have been experimented on. A good cooperative, wave-based FPS
Project Zomboid - despite being isometric, perhaps the most realistic zombie simulator IMO. So many things to do such as base building and character effects you have to manage (hunger, thirst, panic, pain, etc)
DayZ MOD -huge maps, very fun with friends

I might play Killing Floor soon. As for DayZ idk, there has been a lot of talk and hype about it, but I don't know how I feel about it.

I'm not sure how the player base is for the mod. I wouldn't touch the standalone game though.

+1 the best one, has the most DLCs and standalone DLCs, console exclusive safely. I loved watching the first one though and luckily it's coming to steam.

Yeah there's something about these games that makes it so fun and goofy to play, especially with friends and the DLCs are nice additions

The many stores, features, possibilities, customisation, leveling up, exploring, creative killing makes it fun.

I'm waiting for "Fallout 4 Complete". I don't like to buy expensive game and expensive DLC in the day of realese, I like collections; it's chipper :D

Fallout 3 is good, but not the best. I have to install Fallout New Vegas, because i have had finished third one complete and collect everythink is possible.

Their all alive, they never died, they have mutated, it's their only problem. Their more like animals than zombies.

old style zombie lover here. i only like classic slow stupid romero zombies, cant stand random abomination and zombie animals alike. runner zombie, engineer zombie, flying zombie, ninja zombie, talking zombie. gods.

played dead island with the no zombie alternatives mod, liked it a lot. even state of decay has a mod like that but saddly becomes a ctd party :v

havnt found the purfect zombie survival game yet, maybe that project zomboid will do. got it in my wishlist from like forever ;-;

I wouldn't really call it a "zombie game" but KF1 and KF2 hit that niche pretty well.

Nobody said Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead? Damn, It's not in Steam but it's free! Let me copypaste what I wrote about this game some days ago in a forum:
I fell in love with this game when I learned how to play classic roguelikes. I don't care about the visuals (static tilesets), I just love the experience. It's turn based, by the way. I love it because:

  • you have a lot of ways to start: In a refugee, as a failed experiment escaping from the lab, drunk and naked in the shower while your house is on fire (yep), in a huge mall full of zombies...
  • basic needs: you will be hungry, thirsty, exausted... Find food and clean water (or boil it, you don't want any diseases, right?). About the food, don't eat the same thing every day, because that's not healty. Eat fruit for "C" vitamin if you don't want to get scurvy, for example.
  • morale system: you can get happy, sad, angry, etc. depending in what happens to you. If your moral is too low, you can't read books, fix your car or craft. Your morale can be affected by: listening to music (find an electronic shop for a nice MP3 player), being wet ("Dont forget to bring a towel!"), a dead friend (you will be really depressed for a week or more), killed a zombie kid (if you are not a maniac), being hungry or thirsty, eathing something tasty or nasty, etc.
  • mutations: radioactivity will poison you and cause mutations. Some mutations can be bad (your arms can turn into tentacles, heat dependency, bad sight, light sensitive, a beak so you can't wear a gas mask, etc), or can also be good (night vision, hardened skin, more strength, a tail for better swimming, claws, etc). You will need to modify your clothes if you want to wear it when your body changes.
  • a lot of places to explore: houses, labs, military bases, caves, refugee centers, etc.
  • a lot of crafting: melee weapons, tools, clothes, food, even vehicles! You can learn new recipes reading books (there's a lot of books).
  • you can drive: wanna travel really far? just fix a car (you need to know about mechanic) or create a new one from scratch. In the world you can find: cars, buses, hippie vans (with weed inside), armored cars with mounted weapons, military trucks or even tanks if you have the vehicle mods installed.
  • oh, yeah, mods. From more recipes to Doom enemies and mazes (you need to be really OP if you want to fight them). You can also disable the enemies if you want to survive in nature, your enemies will be some animals.
  • enemies: zombies (mostly), mosters, supernatural creatures... Or the nature itself can be dangerous too (leopards, the f*ing moose, wolves, bears...).
  • NPCs: you can find ramdonly some NPCs in the world. They can be hostile (they will menace you, steal something from your inventory and leave. If you move, they'll shoot you) or friendly ones. They also can join you and help you fighting. They can loot their own items or will ask you for food (if they trust you enough).
  • Quests: friendly NPCs can give you simple quests, or you can do the main quest, looking for the refuge center location, surviving your way and talking with everyone in the refugee center. After finishing some of those quests (fight bandits, killing a giant worm, taking care of the dude stealing resources from the refuge), they will send you to a farm to help them. In this place you will have more quests, and you will see the farm growing while you progress (you can even buy a terrain to plant).

Edit: forgot to add:

  • bionics: find some bionics or butcher some bodies to extract them (if you are good in Medicine) and install it in your character, but be careful, you can damage your body or install wrongly the bionic. Learn about medicine and mechanic for less chance of failing. Install some bionics for: nightvision, tools in your finger tips (really useful), a lighter in your hand, a rail gun replacing your hand (this can be bad if you need both hands for something), teleportation, hydraulic muscles, more memory so you don't "forget" what you learn, time dilation, metabolic exchange (what you eat will give you power for your inner batteries)... even solar panels. You will need some energy, those bionics will consume a lot.

Yeah, I love this game, if you didn't noticed it.

About your second question: Project Zomboid would be great :P

Organ Trail: Director's Cut

I got burnt out on zombie media years ago. Organ Trail is the only zombie-themed game I have and enjoy (that can be given away).

As far as games I'd like to see given away...Death Road to Canada looks kinda interesting. Maybe because it looks similar to Organ Trail lmao. Possibly Zombie Exodus as well.
