'the idiots' - That's part of the problem as well you know. You shouldn't want to encourage or engage in the talking down of users. It's wrong no matter who's doing it. One thing I've noticed is that whether you repeat positive or negative behavior, others repeat it the same. So give people good things to repeat, especially with the influence you have. ^^
I'm a proponent of keeping the atmosphere positive as well as helping the newbies learn the ropes. Even if they should have read things beforehand. Even if it's tiring and redundant. Even if it's been 100 years of the same thing. It's important to keep it all fresh, all friendly, and deferring tasks to others if it gets frustrating. You'll still have suspensions and all of that, but it will be without the bad vibes. At least from this old hare's experience. :)

There's a difference between the new guys and idiots. I have no problem helping the new guys. I think this thread should have recieved a permanent ban. And that's just the first one on the top of my head. There's a lot worse, both threads and comments and yet the mods are powerless to do anything about it. Only two of us can delete comments, none of us can edit them, so if something goes up, we're pretty stuck. There's a lot of absolute idiots on this forum. Calling them anything less than what they are won't solve the problem. Getting rid of them? That would solve the problem because there wouldn't be any idiots left to talk about. The attitude also comes from not having enough support and certainly not enough powers to handle things. Did you know we still can't see private giveaways without asking for the link? It makes us have to guess half the time, look incompetent all the time. Our power situation is ridiculously filled with holes and doesn't look to be improving in the near future.

I have the power to ban people. My issue is that may as well be it and that still gets overturned by cg at times. Official practice is that permanent bans aren't so permanent as long as you go above support and cry directly to cg really nicely about how the mods are being mean to you because "I only had four accounts!"

That condescending attitude should not be allowed from support. Despise users and trying to negate them the possibility for appeal (Because not all the bans are fair, and we both know it) it's not exactly the way I would choose to keep a community friendly.

You don't sacrifice your rights by doing anything. You are entitled to them, murders are still entitled to a fair trial and appeals and being treated humanely.
One thing is being held accountable for your actions and answering for them and the other is being bullied by agressive support members.
I do know this is a private site with a private management and that things are run in a way, but you personally said that the owner is not happy with the course of action some support members are taking, that you are too harsh, didn't you?
Also you should try to judge in base of facts and not personal opinions and value judgements.

Except, you just pointed it out. This is a private site. You have no rights here. Only priviledges. If you have a lesser offence, sure, go ahead, appeal all you like, we'll give you plenty of chances. But why, give me one good reason, why should we allow people who use alternate accounts or cheat the feedback system so they get more chances of winning games, which they usually just trade on anyway, yet more chances to do the same? People are held accountable for their actions. You are not entitled to anything here. And your unless your appeal says something we completely missed, your period as a user was your trial, your suspension was the outcome of your trial and your punishment is dealt with. We do judge based on facts. We act on them too.

I believe in reinsertion. I believe there's no evil people, no twisted people but they are pressed into that by external influences. I believe in education. That's why.
And I know this is a private site, but if the head is saying you are being too strict maybe you should listen to him. And I know no one is entitled to anything here but consistent and fair moderation more often than not determine the sucess of a site. Having said that, though, this one has the advantage of providing with free things thus that can be easily ignored.

You're right. No-one's born evil, but they can become so. But that's hardly relevant to what this is talking about. We're talking about greed and the seeking to satisfy that insatiable urge hurting other people's chances unless they actively do the same just to be on equal footing. Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse and even if it was, these people knew exactly what they did when they started to cheat. There is no sympathy for them, there is only the just rewards they earned through their own efforts.

And I actually heard of some issue in the past of being able to view group and/or private giveaways, so I was not aware of that. The support one I did know of though and I think that there are many people wanting/willing to fill that. It's just a matter of getting the qualified ones in.

I appreciate you sharing these things. It's actually more difficult than I thought it was, but they're problems that I've experienced or know how to resolve. So hopefully you know what to do to get those before the end of the year (chronic + other helpful changes). ^^

I hate to continue to discuss this months old topic, but I think you were being a bit disruptive. I can see maybe a temporary suspension from chat, but perma ban just for that definitely doesn't reflect well on what chronic might do as a full sg mod. It seems like he would be banning people he doesn't agree with left and right for "inappropriate behavior"

Except, there's no such thing as a permanent chat ban unless you've been incredibly disruptive or you've done this repeatedly. All that needs to happen is to make an appeal. Which, if I recall, has been mentioned repeatedly. Which means there's just a mountain out of a molehill here.

It's not like we're always looking at the 1500+ chat bans to make sure every one is valid and deserved. When someone is chat banned, they're chat banned and we forget about it... unless they make an appeal. An appeal isn't an admission of guilt, all you have to do is send in a ticket and say "hey guys, can I be unbanned?" and we'll look into it. Our response depends on the situation and how you approach the appeal. Obviously an acknowledgement of what you did wrong goes a long way to help your case, but if you don't feel that's the case, that's fine. Sometimes our reply just might be "hey I've unbanned you, please don't do that again".

Also I've already commended you but public acknowledgement goes a long way. If it was on my hand it's your kind of people I would like to be on charge. I know it's difficult to keep the façade sometimes (I've worked retail) but I still hold that a nice answer and a fair treatment goes a long way, no matter the offense. Thanks

No, appeals are used for anything really. You can appeal against a two day suspension. We just have so many people in and out of chat that we don't really have the time to check who got banned for what, when, if they should be unbanned and how many bans they've had before. If they actually care, they go to SG support, make a ticket requesting an unban and we pretty much do so immediately, as there's now a record of it all easily kept.

So essentially there are technically no "temporary bans" - ones that lift automatically within a couple of days. Everything is "permanent" until an appeal is filed.
At any rate, I can retract some of my previous statement now that I know how the chat bans work. I still don't like chronic though :P

Yeah, Steam's entire chat and moderation system needs a huge overhaul, but that's unlikely to happen, unfortunately, so we stick to what we can get. If there were temporary bans, that'd be great, as once you get X number of people in your chat, it becomes impossible to manually maintain without them.
