Well, the Steam client for OS X wasn’t quite solid, but lately additional problems came on top of that.

Whenever I activate a game, the client freezes and it takes a whole 30(!)+ seconds until the client becomes responsive again! This was never an issue until recently. Activating a game in the past wasn’t freezing Steam at all, at least no more than a couple of seconds.

EDIT: The Above issue has been fixed with the latest update, activating a game is not causing this delay any more. Also the Steam client is not freezing at random points, overall I am very happy with the update - it almost fixed all of the problems!

There is one thing though that persists after the update:

At random times, the backspace is not working inside text boxes (chat box, game search) along with copy/cut/paste on keyboard (though it works with right mouse click). The only solution is to quit and re-open Steam. Another thing: At a regular basis, when browsing at game titles (clicking separately on each one) Steam acts like I am holding down Shift and chooses multiple of them. I have found a solution to this, to press cmd while clicking at any game fixes that.

The idea to contact again Steam “support” - for anything, makes me laugh, at least. I only got canned replies so far - after waiting for weeks - with non of my issues being solved, ever. Steam support is a big topic that can be discussed in separate threads, but I have to mention my lack of hope for things to be solved/improved by contacting them.

Personally, I never had an issue in OS X with any program other than Steam and since I am using it constantly regularly, it became annoying. Some times it is not responding and freezing for short periods when I am trying to interact with it.

I am wondering if all of these are something common among OS X users. As a technical reference, I have the latest/current version of the OS with all the updates installed.

Do you have similar problems with the Steam Client in OS X?

My man. I wishlisted you for non-hypocrisy and wanting a better world.

The problem of anything Steam is that they have the crappiest interface and code designers ever. The Mac Client is not native it's just a wrap, that's why it freezes everything it has to do something. I too have to wait for a few seconds after adding a key to Steam and it straight freezes when adding F2P games .

You brought up an interesting topic, “non native mac client”.

I understand when a game is just being ported like a wrap, but the whole freakin’ platform?
I know it’s all about the minimum cost etc, but .. cannot Valve make a native mac client for millions of users? More satisfied customers means more profit in the long term … For GabeN’s sake!!!

The problem is (oddly) the same for all developers and platforms who don't know shit about design, as they have been traditionally sticked down the PC platform.

It's not just Steam, but it's also Uplay (well nobody should use this crap anyway), but also sadly app like Unreal Engine which is not even adapted or scaled for higher-resolution (which represents about 80% of Macs).

Steam have never been interested in customer, design or platform, only obnoxious hyper-tight and closed system with very innovation if not for money's sake (like the possibility to delete game which nobody asked for since you can hide them, or that trading card speculation market)

That's interesting, thank you for bringing it to our attention. It seems to be a correlation with activation lag and big libraries and that's also common with Windows, since the 4th May update - as it is pointed out also in the other thread with this link:

Regarding the game activation delay, it turns out it is something recent - reported from Windows users too - it seems that it is affecting bigger libraries in size.

About the other issues, they were keep occurring in 3 different OS with clean instals each time - even in 2 different computers - so I can tell with a relative confidence that removing steam completely and starting again will not fix some of these issues for me.

But put aside this activation delay issue, nothing of the others ever happened to you? I guess you have to use the client chat relatively often to occur, since it's about text.

Yeah, its been freezing within the last few weeks for me too when before it was fine. I don't know if it was a recent update or what happened. My PC is still fine activating keys.

However, mine only freezes for 10 seconds or so, so I'm not sure what else is causing problems for you or just that every computer handles it differently.

The size of your steam library makes me to suspect that everything is correlated to that. Maybe the bigger a library is, the more likely for such things to occur - I guess this can be very similar with when you are trying to view in your browser a library with many thousands of games and the browser almost crashes - so does your client when handling thousands of games. Especially when it is not a native one... I can see a pattern here.

Yeah, I haven't heard of any problems with people who have libraries under 2000 or so, so that's probably the root of the problem. Its still weird that the problem doesn't happen on my PC though.

Steam Client is coded like shit, it's nothing new tbh. OS doesn't matter.

Personally I stopped redeeming keys in client itself, I'm using ASF for it now, didn't have any freezes since then.

ASF > Steam Client

Archi, when are you just going to make a new client that replaces Steam altogether? Hmm?!?

Can you do a full reinstall of Steam without uninstalling all your games? I had a couple similar issues a couple years ago and a reinstall helped quite a bit. I'm not sure how that might affect any games you currently have installed but uninstalling and reinstalling would be my suggestion.

Thank you for your suggestion. I should do it, there isn’t a problem with uninstalling the games if you don’t choose so :) Though like I am writing in the comment below, I am afraid that the majority of the issues cannot be fixed with that - based on my previous experience with clean OS and Steam instals.

I hear you. Run disk util too from your recovery partition. It doesn't sound like it's anything on OSX's end, but it never hurts to check on the system. Maybe there's a miscommunication and running each will help

+1 for reinstall suggestion if you haven't already done so. Although, did you recently upgrade to El Captain and this happened? My Steam on OSX isn't experiencing any problems but I didn't bother upgrading - I'm still on Maveriks 10.9.5

I should reinstall it again, though one thing I can tell for sure is that it will not fix the majority of the issues that have been mentioned. I have used 3 different clean instals on 3 different OS the last year and the same problems were occurring (except the delaying on the activation of games - that’s a very recent one, like a ~month). I upgraded to El Capitan in February, before that I had Yosemite for a while.

I'm going to agree with Archi on this one, redeem keys using ASF. I have a similar issue on Windows 10 Pro, but it lasts closer to 10 seconds.

Mac client is shitty indeed. i can't confirm your problem with game activation because I never use it for activation. I'm aware this is the way money is derived ti Mac developers, but i always had problems for printing receipts. that's an important feature for me but during years it was bugged on Mac and Linux and it was impossibile to print them. now it works but my habit is done.
