My pick would be Fight Club and/or The Pursuit of Happyness.

John Carter definitely surprised me, when I first watched it. I didn't know, that it was based on books written in the 1910s by the mastermind behind Tarzan. :D

Also it was great because of the unique idea and the plot. I like stuff where you have to think through things just like Death Note - outplaying people that want to outplay one :)
