Just saw this event and was looking forward to participating, but then I see that links were leaked. People these days ruin all the fun.

There was one leaker in the recent touhou event but at least that was easy to spot due to how the system worked. Not exactly as easy with random links on your steam profile :/

Too bad that people can't behave, this was a really nice event, and I admire all the effort you put in to it. I understand that you want to cancel the non bundled part, and I support it. Really sucks with the leaked links.
Hope that the fact that some people behave badly won't make you see the whole Steamgifts community in a bad light. There are lots of really nice people here. I've had the luck to have only positive experiences from the events I've done, and I made some good friends from it.

It's for the best though. Considering all the work you put in to do this event, it should at least go to the people who actually tried rather than those that just get the link from somewhere else. Were you able to figure out who leaked the links?

that's too bad... As I said in an earlier post, it sucks that ppl think the idea behind the site is "come and grab everything you can" ... Perhaps I am wrong, but I think the idea is to share some time and have fun, all while sharing games O:)

Don't want to seem as spamming your thread or anything... but you could always begin with a small whitelist event and build up from there... Another option would be a public high-lvl event... But, both of them would ruin the fun of searching for treasure... so I guess you could combine whitelist GA's with instructions about how to find invite only link codes (you know, the five character code) hidden in your previous GA's and your profile... that way, you can always check that the winner belongs to your whitelist or otherwise ask for a reroll and blacklist the user...

To prevent leaks, all I can think of what tso184 did for his puzzle.
You can still put treasure hunt links on your profile or whatever location you want but make all of them WL giveaways.
- Create a puzzle asking for the giveaway link + maybe some questions, post it in the thread.
- People should post in the thread after solving the puzzle and tell their nickname on itstoohard.
- For every 10 solvers create a new puzzle link with same questions, since we can see only top 10 solvers.
- Whitelist the appropriate people among solvers.

Maybe we can hunt for codes then instead of the links. Even better it can be the itstoohard link to the puzzle we look for. After every 10 solvers, the new link can be added to the original puzzle page.
One of the questions can ask for the location of the link for instance. I know all of this can be leaked as well. But it is just extra effort and they still need to ask for whitelist in the thread after solving the puzzle..

Tso's event worked because participants were preselected: 1:1 ratio, level and finally puzzle (and most puzzle solvers know each other, it's not that big group :) ) and personal verification.
TBH, I don't see a leak-proof way for this kind of mass event. There is possiblity to drastically cut down impact of leaking, but it would need support's special cooperation.

also - ppl who want to cheat will simply share the answers with each others instead of sharing the link. Not to mention trolls that when they know answers simply make alt accounts with stupid names to spam your puzzle with fake solvers for "lulz" as it happened in one of previous "ITH leaderboards" events.

While I have had my own personal bad experiences with staff, that's not what I was alluding to.
I mean, the policies in general are light toward people that do grievous things, but have no leniency toward honest mistakes.
It's a weird way of doing things, even before you account for any personal opinions of the staff's quality.
Since negative offenders are encouraged- you'll notice the person who said some very painful things toward me further on in this thread didn't even get a 'Please try and be respectful to others'- they feel no hesitation in continuing until they inevitably cross a line- and even then, they're not concerned, because they know the punishment will be mild.
Meanwhile, someone who makes a joke that staff doesn't get (I mean non-inappropriate stuff, obviously), or is honestly confused (eg, new), sometimes gets treated very harshly.
I'm not even saying that's a universal thing, but it creates a weird atmosphere where good-minded people tiptoe out of fear of upsetting the staff, while major offenders don't care at all about acting out.
That's just odd :X

Nobody (of us, and I'd see about someone else) leaked these links in places where everybody didn't search for them. It's even more funny because if it wouldn't leaked through somebody else, 4 days later there would be so much entries in this giveaways anyway that a dozen of "leakfinders" wouldnt' even count that much.
Melly is in charge of the games and can choose to bring them down as the whole event had been cheated
