I kinda think that renaming the topic would have been really useful to anyone who had a similar problem as they could find out new stuff about the tool as some don't really read the tool's description carefully and just come to the forum to find out more about it.

I personly would prefer keeping the polical-threads and just getting rid of the shitposters.
But I guess since politics tend to polarise it's next to impossible having the discussion without the shitposting.

Well it doesn't seem to me like it had the potential to cause any problems as it all got cleared up by the members really fast and it's not like we could have seen who the winner you were talking about was until he marked the game as received or unless you called him out (which you didn't).
Naturally, I'm just saying this as my opinion and with (probably limited) knowledge of how stuff here works :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Yep, even if you still have to check manually, it's still better to have to check only the games listed by the tool rather than all the wins
Comment has been collapsed.
This - if it shows all clear, it means all is clear.
If it doesn't, check for the stuff it missed / stuff it can't check.
Comment has been collapsed.
Since you can't check the the libary of somebody with a private profile doing it the old fashioned way (and checking manually) won't help neither from what I can tell.
In general I would suggest adding the winner and asking him to briefly switch his profile to public or friends only so you can run the SteamGifts Tool on it. From what I've heard most SG-users with private profiles are completly used to that.

I will do that in the future. I am taking a trip and wanted to get the gift out before I left and risk a suspension for taking longer than 7 days. He hadn't been online in almost a day and I wasn't sure if I would catch him before I left. I have done giveaways before and have always allowed the time to take care of them in the past. This trip came unexpectedly and I'm feeling a bit rushed and wanted to at least get that out of the way. It's my bad for having no patience right now. I hate the stress of traveling!
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea traveling is always a hassle but I hope it's worth it once you get there. ;)
Also in my opinion there's no need for an apology since there was absolutly no harm done but of course politeness never hurts.

First of all ... i dont understand anyone ( aside of progamers ) having a private profile on steam....
What are you hiding ? Owning bad rats ? ( everyone does ) .... thats just stupid .
More often then not , i question myself if i should send my giveaway reward to a Private profile user ... so yeah i get your point here. ...
With all seriousness tho , its your giveaway , you can request a new winner , for trivial reasons such as not liking the winners avatar and etc ... so dont feel bad bout it :)
World is rough place , deal with it :P
Comment has been collapsed.
Actually you can't.
If I remember correctly you will only get a reroll if you have a valid reason like the winner has not activated some of his previous wins or already owns part of a package that contains several items (normally more than 50 % but the GA-creator has the last say so even if the winner just own 1 game out of 20 the reroll will be granted)
Since you mentioned avatars... I'm not sure but I very much hope that having an offensive avatar like a swastika is a valid reason for a reroll as well.

Who gets to decide what's offensive, though?
Comment has been collapsed.
Since I'm morally unquestionable obviously I do. ;)
But serious that is indeed a valid point but I guess there are a few things we all can agree are not acceptable like symbols associated with nazism, KKK, IS (unless it's just a buttplug ripoff flewn at a gay pride parade :D) child pornography or gore. I bet there are many more but those are the first that come to mind.

No you can't

I used to think it was so that people maybe wouldn't get so many fake friend requests but a friend of mine who owns only two games and has never had his profile public is always complaining about friend requests from people he doesn't know and I rarely ever get them and I'm active in many gaming communities and my profile is always public. I see no point in being private either but it's their choice I guess. It would be nice if profiles had to remain public in order to join giveaways here though. It would sure save the giveaway creators a lot of work when they are already being generous.

Pro tip put something on steam market for many robotic friends ;)

Honesty is always the first step into the right direction in such cases.
While reading this topic the following lyrics were sung and they fit well:
Life is short so learn from your mistakes,
And stand behind the choices that you made,
Face each day with both eyes open wide,
And try to give, don't keep it all inside.

OP is full of disinfo.
SG does not have special powers.
Comment has been collapsed.
Perhaps someone wanted to boost their ego. Rather trite and pointless to dwell on honestly.
The only people that can legitimately check private Steam profiles are Steam Community Moderators -- and no one on SG staff is a Steam Community Mod.
Move on. Take care. <3

They can't check private profiles, but they can check the list of games an user own since Steam accounts are synced with Stemagifts. And if you don't switch your private profile to public once a week for the synchronisation, you are blocked from entering giveaways.

That has no bearing on this discussion. Congratulations.

It certainly appears as though it does have bearing on this discussion. P

The discussion isn't about how SteamGifts caches syncs -- that's called standard operating procedure of the site.
The discussion was about OP being told SG staff can check private profiles.
Checking internal SG cache =/= Checking private Steam profiles
The overlap is negligible since the cache can be 6d23h59m old. More of a 'last effort' sort of approach if you don't mind my candidness.
Regardless, repeating the same posts over and over in the same thread (i.e. what TempeteJoachim is doing) is frowned upon in most civilized boards.

The discussion is about the ability of the staff to check the activation of won gifts on private profiles, so yes it does.

You woke up on the wrong side of the bed today or something? You know full well what the OP means in that post. You're just arguing semantics at this point.

So if they haven't synced their profiles in a while then you guys are in the dark as much as the rest of us. That's way different than telling me that you guys can see them even if the profile was private when I made my reroll request. In my original thread that I was asked to delete there were many others who also suggested asking Support to check the profile for me but no one said anything to the contrary. I'm glad that I didn't go with that route when trying to resolve the issue.

It's not always that people with private profiles have something to hide.
I personly enjoy using Steam as kind of a social network for gaming but not everybody does and there's nothing wrong with valuing ones privacy. But here on SteamGifts it obviously causes a lot of unnecessary work for the GA-creater if the winner has a private profile so I'm glad that they are quite rare.

To be honest, steamgifts.com is the only reason why I'm having my profile set public.
I thought you were supposed to for people being able to check your activated gifts.

Edit: While I was typing bobo responded and explained it. :) My post can therefore be ignored.
The only way I could imagine support knowing about games a user with a private profile owns is that they keep track of it. As far as I understand it users with a private profile have to sync once a week manually in order to join giveaways*. Keeping a full list of games for each user would be a lot of data though so if this really is the case I guess they only check for won games and then mark it as activated or not.
I don't really think they do it though as I have never before heard of it and until I see a statement of a support member I just assume they don't know. If they knew we wouldn't have cases where users are reported for not activating multiple wins weeks or even months afterwards.
*From the FAQ: "From that point on, you can use the site with a private profile, however, if you wish to enter giveaways, the site will ask you to switch to a public Steam profile once a week to bring your account up-to-date."

Wow, everyone keeps talking about a "Tool", and since I have no idea what the "Tool" is, I'm starting to feel like a Tool. ;-P
Is this "Tool" somewhere on this Site? How do I use this "Tool"? Will this "Tool" help me tell whether someone already owns a DLC?

and no...it does not help with dlcs, but it´s still handy
Comment has been collapsed.
Checking if a winner already owns the DLC you are giving away is possible, but it's a bit tricky (yeah, I forgot to reply to your earlier comment, sorry).
You have to add the winner on Steam, then go on the store page for the DLC and add it to your cart, and choose the option "I'm buying this as a gift", then choose "Send the gift directly over Steam", then you have to choose someone from your friend list to send the gift to, so select the winner and if they already own it it will say so next to their username (of course after you have checked you can still cancel the purchase).
So yeah, it's a bit of work but it's possible to check.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, not really into putting that much effort into finding out about something I Gave Away, I do like to know that the person that gets it is gonna use it, but mostly, it try and give them the benifit of trusting that they're legit.
That's why I try to do DLC GA's for just the Official Game Group.
Most people in the Official Game Group are gonna own the game at the very least, and I'd like to think that there are'nt Bots/Scammers/Regifters in Every Group.
I'm probably totally fooling myself, but going through all of that to find out if some one owns a DLC would be a Pain.

Yes, of course I can understand not wanting to go through the hassle of doing this, but at least it's possible to check for those who really want to ^^

I erroneously thought that a winner of one of my giveaways didn't activate prior wins because their profile was private and I tried to use SG Tools to verify without knowing that it doesn't cache prior requests. I also found out that SG support can tell if a user has activated their wins even if they have a private profile. I am very sorry for the misunderstanding and will just go back to my old way of checking by doing the legwork myself.
*EDIT
So just exactly HOW does SG tell if a user has activated his gifts if his profile is private? Is it a secret or something? How much does Gaben charge you for this information? It would be great to get an explanation of how that works. It would sure save a lot of hassle if everyone else could do it too. We promise that we won't tell if it's a secret.
