Now that Serious Sam 4 is out I went back and played all of the main titles and I still think that Serious Sam 2 is the best. I know that it's seen as the black sheep of the herd but I think that the setting, the visual style and the wackiness suits it pretty well. I don't like the more serious tone of the last 2 games and for me personally, 2 upgrades the formula of first/second encounter and adds vehicles and funnier weapons like the parrot.

So what do you think, which Serious Sam game is the best for you and why? I would be happy to see why people hate/love Serious Sam 2.

While I loved the originals the HD versions of TFE & TSE for me are on the same level and are the best, SS2 is crap, SS3 is 2/3 crap (those urban levels, ugh), SS4 to me is an indicator of alot of problems in it's development phase. It's an unfinished mess with no clear direction, art style is not very good either, npc's, skill points, can't even custom map the weapons and have to use a weapon wheel...

So far I like SS4 more than 3, because of the color palette (but I have some weird camera stutter even though it's constant 70/80 fps). SS3 is grey, grey and more grey.

Color palette, yeh , I agree. I actually remembered recently that there is that color option and you can choose "Vivid" for example which helps a little.

Second Encounter was the first serious Game I played and seriously it left a serious impression on me. I should stop using serious so much.

I find it really funny that no-one has chosen SS4 as his favorite yet. For good reasons, too. The game is mega poopoo.

It just came out and most people probably haven't played it yet.

I also enjoyed the over-the-top Serious Sam 2 direction a lot. The game, especially in co-op, is loads of fun. In almost every level you get to fight new enemies and the settings are really varied. When I played Serious Sam 3 I could feel that Croteam was making a military shooter that they reissued as a Serious Sam game. Had high hopes that 'Planet Badass' would fix that... guess I should have known better.

I've liked them all equally so far (don't have 4 yet, so haven't played that one obviously...). No need to pick a "favourite", each of them delivered its own thing.

Why HD, not original?

I didn't see them in the suggestion list while typing, but it could be my mistake. Still you can vote on the HD versions as if you would vote on the originals.

People may have the games on a different platform or client so locking it like this is not the right way to go.

Exactly! There's a great, huge world outside of Steam that people seem to forget about.

My steam profile doesn't show it but I tried few Serious Sam games (maybe 3... it was ages ago) and the one I loved the most was Serious Sam 2 (I have finished it). But I remember when Serious Sam 3 was released people said SS 2 was the worst (maybe it's always the general opinion) mainly because of its visual style. But I have the same opinion as yours, Serious Sam isn't serious enough to need realist graphic, the enemies are so absurd, the story is meant to be stupid, the "hero" is a moron, the jokes...

I love when games don't take themselves too seriously like SS2 and Overlord. These types of games are just pure "fun" in my opinion.

imo first and second encounter hd are the best , same old sam but in HD a perfect balance between funny and seriousness
SS2 was still a serious sam game but too weird and trying too hard to be funny
SS3 was taking it self way too serious

I'm enjoying Serious Sam 2 right now too!
I was most impressed with FE, the design of kamikaze is amazing!
liked SS3 too, but I hated the map where you had to find a switch in a dark room.

SS1 (both of them) were the best ones.
Can't say I'm a fan of SS2 but it was enjoyable.
SS3 is crap, I hate it.

I've only ever made a serious effort with First and Second encounter. For some reason one of the games kept crashing near the end for me and I lost my patience after a couple of times with forgetting to save after long stretches.

The 1st and 2nd encounter had a certain atmosphere that is non existent in later games.
