We all know movies and games that we just can't describe to people without spoiling something.

The first rule about that game is: you do not talk about that game.
   -Albert Einstein, 1492

In terms of movies, I can think of Memento, The Man From Earth and Fight Club.
In terms of games, I'd venture to say The Stanley Parable and The Witness.
I would tell you all about them, but I really wouldn't. For your own sake.

Are there any games that I NEED to play, but that you can't tell me anything about?

I am going to say Crypt of the Necrodancer, though it is not quite the category you are mentioning. I mean, I can easily tell you why it is awesome, without spoiling much of it (the trailer pretty much shows what it is like)...

...but you will not believe it is awesome, until you try it for a while. :D

Damn, that's a good thread. Can't think of a single game that's not been listed already but as far as movies go, Coherence comes to mind.

I'd say Undertale and To the Moon are more effective if you go in blind.

I agree, would second The Stanley Parable and The Beginner's Guide. Also INSIDE!
Though not on the same "wow!" level, I was really pleasantly surprised with We Were Here (free game) because I knew nothing going into it. Fun to play with a friend who also hasn't seen anything.

Wow, that should keep my wishlist filled for a while o_o
I've played Thomas Was Alone and Brothers : Tale of Two Sons, and I've enjoyed both of them a lot.
I also have a couple of the mentioned games in my library, I'll make sure to try them out!
Just got Scanner Sombre from the Yogscast bundle, I'll go in blind :D.
And that reminds me that I have Crypt of the Necrodancer on GoG and I haven't played it yet. Shame on me!

I guess Darkest Dungeon? I mean, it would be real funny to see someone's reaction to it if they play it while knowing absolutely nothing about it (and the "twist" can be seen a mile away, mostly because the game is pretty long so it's delivered to you gradually). :D

Also Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1. All people seem to see in the series is "fanservice" but there is a very good (and mostly humorous) story in there too.

Rabi-Ribi. Because I'm pretty sure that at least 90% of the time the moment I say "Bullet Hell/Metroidvania/Platformer" people will instantly get scared off. :P

Dustforce, cuz I don't think my description of "ninja janitors" gives the game enough justice.

SpaceChem. Yes, this game has a story. Yes, it is really good. Yes, you will probably not be able to see it unless you use guides because despite being a puzzle game it gets ridiculously hard.

Long Live The Queen- this game's aesthetic and initial presentation hides the (somewhat harshly realistic) depth that its story goes into.

eversion. This fun cheerful game has nothing unusual going for it. I don't even know why I'm mentioning it in a list of games that we can't talk about. :) ... :) (: :)

... Y'know I might have slightly missed the whole point of your thread and started recommending games at some point.. (Do check out that last one at least though.)

+1 for Long Live the Queen, although watching Total Biscuit's playthough will accomplish the same thing. (He went in blind and got hooked, too.)

Her Story

Zero Escape: The Nonary Games. I played the original version of this game some years ago on the Nintendo DS under the name "999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors" and it's the first game that I would put in this "can't tell" category.

OMG 999, I loved that game :D Such a compelling work of art!
I'll be on the lookout for Zero Escape then!

And yeah I have Her Story on my wishlist :)

Her Story is fantastic, but is easily described without spoiling anything. It's a detective game where you try to solve a mystery by going through archival footage. It perfectly captures the feel of a detective or investigative reporter in a movie going through archival footage trying to piece together the clues and solve the mystery, and before long I had a sheet of paper filled with potential clues, theories, and keywords.

999 and the Zero Escape series is also great. I just played the second one and it was awesome.

The others I can think of have already been mentioned. So I won't talk about them

Mount Your Friends, definitely!
My boyfriend made me play this game without telling me anything about it but the title, and I had an hilarious session! I also made a friend of mine play this at blind and I loved her reaction :P

Froggato. For a free game it's pretty good.
Cave story. Cult classic. And also free!
Alpha Protocol.
Maybe mark of the ninja gets in this category also.
Bad Rats never got the attention it deserves.
The Great Escape is an old old very old stealth game about that classic movie. It's pretty hard but I enjoyed every single bit.
The beginner's guide.
EDIT:A bird story and SiN

Pony Island, and Undertale would be my two. I can tell you that Undertale is an RPG, and that Pony Island is a game. That's about it. But I loved both of them.

I can second a lot of the games here, especially the visual novels that might seem not your style or not worth it at first.

But hands down the top of the list for me has to be SOMA.

SOMA is one of those games that will stick with me forever and was worth every moment.

Movies --

  • The Game (if only you could watch it again for the first time)
  • Straight to Hell (the epitome of "What did I just watch?")
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey (just when you think you know what is going on, ...)

Games --
(Everyone has already listed them.)

I've watched The Game a few months ago, by reading the box I thought it was a sort of Saw movie lol. But I figured that with Michael Douglas in it, it shouldn't be too gore :P.
I totally agree with you, rewatching it just wouldn't be the same.
