I've noticed in every game I play, hostility rises, but it shouldn't be that way.
Gaming was made for a way to play and stay indoors all the time.
So why in the hell do we name call and stray away from the way the game was meant to be played?
Stop with the harsh words, the mean phrases and teabagging, why is listening to mad kid on X-box funny? He's got tears pouring down his face and his nose is runny.
I don't mean to insinuate that I am a flawless player, but we're all just people with controllers, and WASD keys wearing down from overuse, lets not turn to anger when we lose.
Multiplayer was made to connect and compete, not to insult and be the very thing you secrete, it's shitty to act like a shit, ruins the game, it's not funny to troll, and if you could please, answer my poll?

(Comment 'Yes' Or something similar if you have been mean to someone on a game, or online, or 'No' if you haven't, or something similar if you haven't.)

Yes, all the time. But it really depends on the game.

It only seems that way because only people with voice chat can express themselves; everyone else can only play silently or troll if they're extremely inclined to

I loved the community in me3coop, so I was shocked when I started playing dota2, that people can be so so sooo mean to other people and insulting without reasons. The fun fact: most of the insulting people are from country starting on R letter >_>

are you serious maybe the pc version has a nice community but on xbox they are all rude to you if you rank is lower than 1000 and then you get kicked so the only way of playing a game is waiting for friends to buy it or get online but i noticed only Americans do that

If they wanted to connect people they should have omitted the "competitive" part of the whole multiplayer thing. As long as there is competition, there is hate. :P

I guess my answer would be "No", I don't purposely insult others... unless the other player is a cunt. I don't take insults from insects lightly.

So I should let them have their way? I don't swear often and never swear inside a game (I do that out loud but the people on the other side can't hear it and it's usually directed to my internet provider, not them). But there is limits to being polite to jerks. If they're jerks, I won't be polite to them. I'll point out just how stupid they are and get it over with. :P

Mute the chat? Um, if you're thinking COD community, then no, I DO NOT play that. Causes too much mental harm.

I guess I didn't word my comments very well. People who do petty insults are easy to ignore. I would imagine if I played a game with voice communication they would sound funny. XD
It's the ones who get lucky and happen to have the upper hand- having better teammates doing the dirty work for them, higher leveled gear, lag, luck, exploits- THEY are the annoying ones. They will be winning due to factors out of your control and gloat about it... and that is where it really hurts. Nothing is nastier than having your skills insulted by someone like that and not being able to do anything about it.

Like I already said, I don't swear or insult anyone. I'm just not being overly-polite and helpful like usually. So don't get a wrong idea. :P

My Job is done for the day... I of course don't use any hacks or exploits.. just people get angry so easily its as if they think they are the best gamer in the world and we shouldn't be able to kill them.

So much rage ensues when you constantly look for them to kill them.

No, I try to be nice and enjoy the game with people. But I find that very often, there are pricks thinking they're good that look down on other people. That's why I prefer solo games: they often offer more content than MMO, and you can avoid all the negative aspects of the community. Restricted co-op works fine for me too.

No. But I barely play online and when I do, it's just for fun. I don't get irritated in multiplayer games...just bored. In single player (e.g. Super Meat Boy) I get angry when I'm still failing after hours of doing the same thing, but at myself.

I think of it like driving, some people get road rage, some don't mind at all. I could be in traffic for hours and still be happily listening to my music, eve if I'm late for something important.

Well, the things that I have noticed when I am with my friend who enjoys FPSs such as the CoD series is that when you are either with a friend or in the hype of a multiplayer game, you feel a little, idk, silly. You feel a little obnoxious and willing to try new things to make you or your friends laugh. I don't know.

If they're stupid enough to get angry at someone playing better than them (look, ma, no hacks!), then they deserve everything they get. I have to put up with them for the rest of the game until they ragequit. So what should I do? Get angry back and be no better? Or laugh at them as they QQ snot all over my favourite map as I begin to specifically target them (bonus points if I get my entire team to do the same. You've won the match if you can get the enemy team to help out)?

Not mad that he is losing, but mad that he was insulted. My fault for not being clear. That's still not nice though, I mean, what if a group of people took a shit on your front porch, and got the whole neighborhood to do it everyday?

Ah, no, I won't launch the first blow. My bad, I misunderstood. I'll only retaliate, with bullets more than words. And I only teabag friends for a laugh. If I need to announce that I have indeed pwned your arse, I'll just shoot your corpse a little bit.

And if they took a crap on my porch first, I'd consider theirs to be fair play.

Haven't we all?

Imagine that if people can get sentimental, or outright rage on a sport, or even because a car in front of someone is going slower than the one behind, what could happen in an environment where no one can see each other's face, where no one can tell if you're 32yrs old or 15, and most importantly, you can get away with it.

It's in our nature after all, some people can rationalize it and think before acting sometimes, some people react in the worst way possible just because you missed a shot, he killed you, or you simply adviced him to aim higher (not as a form of troll, but as a legitimate advice).

I work with people (adults) that exhibit gamer rage - they simply hate to lose and resort to cursing, throwing gamepads...just overall destructive behavior. Does it make me want to laugh or make fun of them? Yes, as I have no clue how in the hell someone can get so worked up over a game - any video game, competitive sport, etc., and they do tend to be the same people - the ones that yell at football games and video games. However, making fun of them isn't nice either, as you pointed out, but it IS part of human nature to separate out those that you either don't understand or identify with, so - to be better or not to be...?

I play League of Legends a lot. The community is 100% awful. People are just over competitive and if they're playing well and someone makes a mistake they'll rage at them. I won't lie, I've done my fair share of shit-throwing in the past. My philosophy is simple though, if you're doing bad or don't know a tactic or something, then listen to advice.

Don't be ignorant and continue to do something wrong if someone offers you advice if they have experience. In terms of people who just rage and shout abuse for nothing though, more akin to console gaming from my experience, there's no place for that. A bit of friendly banter with people you know is fine, but hurling racist remarks and such at people for no reason is just out of order.

Perhaps it is just a representation of people's realities within the games themselves. In the real world perhaps they are just bullied or being picked on. Probably to the point where they themselves become what they feared, except on the online community.
Of course there are those guys out there who just do it for the lols. Personally, I don't chase arguments but I do cry out FUUUUUUUUUUU to myself when someone pulls off a BS shot or something similar.
So for myself it is no, but I will admit sometimes the online arguments actually become so juvenile it gets funny

I usually only get smack in Dota 2 (when playing in Southeast Asia mind you - I find Americans much more friendly for some reason, VOIP probably stops people from being all too dickish).

I occasionally get smack in MechWarrior Online, but that's really because an organized team of 8 will always destroy a PUG team, and the PUGs are usually always pissed.

If I'm mean on the internet, it's for a good reason. I don't see myself like that guy who whines at every time he dies. ( my friend does, I hate that sometimes :/ ) If it was a nice shot, like a headshot or something, I type " nice shot " or " well done " and I move on. Ofcourse I kill him afterwards, because I'm such a pro. But I'm only mean to people who are mean to me.
