We've reached the point where video games have gone full circle. The most gore you are gonna see with most modern games is a small blood puff or a hit indicator on your crosshair.

Seriously. Do people remember games like Soldier of Fortune? From wikipedia:

Soldier of Fortune was best known for its graphic depictions of firearms dismembering the human body. This graphic violence is the game's main stylistic attraction, much like the destructible environments of Red Faction or bullet time of Max Payne. The GHOUL engine enables depiction of extreme graphic violence, in which character models are based on body parts that can each independently sustain damage (gore zones). There are 26 zones in total. A shot to the head with a powerful gun will often make the target's head explode, leaving nothing but the bloody stump of the neck remaining; a close-range shot to the stomach with a shotgun will leave an enemy's bowels in a bloody mess, and a shot to the nether regions will cause the victims to clutch their groin in agony for a few seconds before kneeling over dead. It is possible to shoot off an enemy's limbs (head, arms, legs) leaving nothing left but a bloody torso. In the last mission there is also a fictional microwave weapon, causing the enemies to fry or explode, depending on the firing mode.

I remember Soldier of Fortune. Unfortunately, I own the 360 version. Suicidal AI in a escort mission. Not fun.

Only ever played demo of SoF, but loved it. Especially since you could scale time and spawn whatever you wanted. Spawn a ton of enemies, scale time, blow them into tiny bloody arteries-popping-out-of-their-limbs pieces in slow motion with a shotgun and a pistol.

Some of the more violent games I've played recently...

  • Sleeping Dogs (some of the environmental deaths are pretty brutal)
  • and-- ...umm... okay... I think maybe that's it...? :-\
  • Space Marine was enjoyably violent, but didn't seem overly bloody
  • Spec Ops: The Line...
  • OOOOOHHHH, and The Darkness II! Bloody, violent, and very fun.

even today were videogames are not that violent anymore like soldier of fortune, many of them are still censored in germany.
brothers in arms hells highway for example is in uk at the age of 15 with full gore and blood.
in germany it is at the age of 18 but blood is missing and there is no gore in the game.

really stupid...

You can take people's heads off and sever parts that spew blood, you just can't kill any kids if they show up at all. Entire game worlds of adults and probably not even any pets. It is hard to even see games with the cop-out of having invincible children in your apocalyptic torture simulators.

I prefer to have little to no gore in my gaming personally... I've enjoyed zombie games and games like Dead Space where you blow off limbs, etc... but not into seeing lots of blood or intestines or brain matter...

We need more complicated mechanics so I can actually decimate a corpse to the point it does not look like a corpse, that feeling when you beat someone to death and keep hitting until nothing but chunks remain ahhhhh happy face.
