i'm currently low on HDD space, but i'm interested in buying a lot of games, but i'm holding out on them, because of HDD price, it's ridiculously high, i was planning to clone my HDD to a 2 TB HDD, my current one is 1 TB HDD, did you guys also experienced this ?

just for information, HDD price in my country is now :

$88 for 1 TB Samsung HDD and $150 for 2 TB Samsung HDD (this is the cheapest brand available here)

i don't even need to say about Seagate price and WD price, i think you guys know that both of them are the at the top price.

btw i also know that Seagate and WD bought Samsung HDD Division and Hitachi HDD Division.

everyone knows that it's just a reason to raise the price, even the distributor knows that, it's not the real reason for the high HDD price, and besides i wasn't asking about the reason of why the price is rising.

Edit : besides there is no limited stocks, i know this because i knew one of the distributor, HDD stock is not limited because of the flooding, the flooding only halt the production for a short amount of time.

wow - I did not know that... was wondering why I was having a hard time finding good deals on hard drives. Guess they're dealing with a lot worse than 10 cents a gig.

Still sux tho' I need one of those 1 or 2 TB monsters and would like to set up an external backup as well.

well i needed one of those 2 TB, to expand my current HDD, by cloning it, so that i don't need to reactivated my games, and also i'm really running low.

WD said that september the price will go down, and september is more than half a year away from now, i don't know if i can wait that long, i think i'm gonna passed this year steam summer camp.

i hate games with activation limits, and try to avoid them, except for Batman AC, it's a bit too hard to pass.

well games are different in sizes, most indie games are small in sizes, but AAA games are too big, i have the total war collection, and 3 of them are 20 Gigg each, and btw i have around 121 games.

Sure. I had an 1 TB HD that I was not able to fill, even with lots of movies.
And I agree that hard drives are currently too expensive. I was planning to buy an external hard drive, but I did not find anything payable, even during black friday.

current price is a bit better than during black friday, even thought my nation did not have such things as black friday, but i know around what time of year it is.

during black friday 1TB HDD is around $120, it's cheaper now, but not as cheap as before they came up with the flood reason.

I have at least 2 games that by themselves take over 50 GB

EDIT: don't know what I was smokin' - did a check and don't have anything close to 50 GB - do have some hogs but the biggest currently installed is Richard Burns Rally with the RSRBR mod just under 20 GB - doesn't take long to fill up a hard drive anyway...

I too am suffering from a shortage of space, but in no way is it making me think a lot before buying a game. Especially on steam. Steam works, because once you buy something on your account, it's there. It's not gonna go away. If there's a game on sale, even if I can't install it right away, I'll get it, and keep it until I've got the space.

If anything, this is making me actually complete my games a lot more. As I can only have a few large games installed at any one time, It's making me complete the games I have installed, before uninstalling, and installing the next one.

the things that is making me thinks before buying a games because of low HDD space is :

  1. When will the HDD price drop, is it soon ? or is it still a long time from now ?

  2. if i bought the games that goes on sale now, what if the game price drops when i finally bought a new HDD ?

  3. if i bought the games now, when i can finally download and install it, will i still be interested in that game ?

and lots more reasons.

Combined with expensive Internet in my country, yeah, it makes you reconsider even more about what you buy. My HDD capacity is only 200GB and my ghetto external drive is about 120. I get to actually play what I buy though (instead of amassing a huge library) so it's all good in terms of games ;)

1 decade ago
Permalink

well i also only bought games that i'm interested in, if i bought every game on steam sale, i think my library wont be just 121 games, i can't play a lot of them because of available HDD space.

You people don't know what a god damn 'shortage' is.

I chewed out a vendor for a good 30 minutes because he tried to rip me off on a faulty hard drive he sold me and attempted to replace it with one of lesser value.

My hard drive was 120MB

He wanted to replace it with a 100MB one

There are plenty of low cost options if you really need hard drive space even with the 'increase' in prices lately.

and they may not return to normal, if they satisfied with their current profit, from jacking the price up.

and it's a 2 company monopoly right now, since the competitor for internal drive is bought out by them.

They're already going back down to normal... If you take time to shop around (5mins on google/pc hardware websites..) you'll be able to find a bargain. After the floods, HDD's here went up 2 to 3 times the regular price but since maybe mid-November, they've slowly been coming down again. This is because people have stopped buying them as stores have marked up the prices so much but now the stores are slowly reducing the prices again because they have too much stock and realise people are just waiting out till they go back down in price again.

If you're lucky, you might be able to find a store having a sale on a few HDD models and you'll be able to pick them up for the same price you could 6 months back. I actually picked up a 2TB WD Caviar Black for $99 earlier this month.

So glad I bought a dirt cheap 1.5 TB in September as a data grave for my new pc (which sports a nifty SSD). Been playing with the thought of getting another TB just for good measure, but eh, I still have half of my drive free. Most of its contents are Steam games btw, 154 games installed (totalling 466 GB). Ludicrous stuff actually when I think about it, used to have 300+300+320+500 in my old comp, was a PITA to manage.

The hell do you people store on your hard drives that requires so much space? I have like 100 games backed up via Steam on my 2TB HDD (many of which are huge games), a backup of my documents/music/pictures/etc, and various stuff I ripped/encoded from my Blu-rays...and I still have about 1TB left over the 2 years I've had this drive.

mine is only 1TB, and it got my ripped music, steam games, and japanese animation, and i got less than 100GB left.

that's the reason why i wanted to upgrade to 2TB, i thought that 1 TB is enough.

besides nowadays games are huge, 3 Total war game @ 20GB each, TF2 @10GB, and another 100 titles.

steam gave me orange box, during the steam holiday sale.

Of course, we all have that high priced game on our wishlist ;)
My biggest question is, in all honesty, since when 88USD is expensive? considering the price of other computer hardware, this would be between the cheapest parts of a computer, hence my question.

I know the dollar price is different, but even for me, where 1 dollar is equal to 4.50 pesos (so a 1TB drive would cost around 400 pesos) the price is not that crazy.

I'm also aware i do not know the price of an HD before the accident, but still i think its not that high.

(oh and the fact that i mentioned skyrim was just an example, i do not know what's on your wishlist :D )

and 10 thousand rupiah is enough for one decent meal.

and my pc is a gift from my rich aunt, i never bought my own pc, i wanted to upgrade to i7 2600k, but can't afford it.

and 88$ is a lot of money for me, besides i wasn't aiming to bought another 1TB HDD, i am planning on buying 2 TB HDD, because another 1TB is useless for me.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Why is 1TB useless? A second drive will double your storage. You could use one drive to store your anime collection and the other for the rest.

But if you don't want to buy all you can do is clear some stuff to make room. That's what I recently did.

i've heard that installing steam games on other than your primary drive is a hassle, and some even said that somehow steam also put a copy on the primary drive.

besides with the 1TB drive at 88$, and 2TB at 140$, i think i better approach the wait and see method, because with a few $ more i can get twice the size.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Steam has no problem running regardless of where you put it. I had it in partition E on my main drive, then cleared some space on my second drive, copied all the games there (not even using a partition tool, just a file copy tool), renamed that partition to E: and everything I tried works fine.

Even without this partition renaming trick, Steam is one of the best apps for moving games around. One of its great advantages is that you can just install it, copy all the games from another drive or backup or whatever, and it will work. (You will have to tell it to install them again, but it will have the data and will not redownload.)
