Q: HOW DO I GET ACCESS TO COMPETITIVE MODE?
A: To gain access to Competitive Mode, you must have a Premium TF2 Account and a qualifying telephone number on Steam. Examples of a telephone number that does not qualify would be a Voice Over IP number (e.g. Skype) or a number linked to a VAC-banned account. (For more information about qualifying phone numbers, please visit the Steam FAQ.)

Q: WHY DO I NEED A PHONE NUMBER?
A: Associating a phone number with a Steam account helps ensure a greater degree of account security and player accountability, which reduces the likelihood of cheating and abuse.

Q: WHAT IF I CAN'T OR DON'T WANT TO PROVIDE A PHONE NUMBER?
A: If you are unable to associate a telephone number with your Steam account, you can purchase a lifetime Competitive Access Pass from the Mann Co. Store. When the Meet Your Match Update goes live, you will be able to buy the Pass at an introductory discount rate of $9.99.

All this from the FAQ.

Thoughts on this?

Honestly. I think it's weird that you need a premium account especially if you need to give your phone number/buy a pass anyways.
Other than that I guess I kinda get it. I just thought it's interesting because Valve seems to REALLY want our phone numbers. O_o

How do you feel about this?

Seems fine to me.
Not cool of Valve at all.

I approve...this should reduce cheating at least a little
Otherwise with a f2p game you ban a cheater and he just comes back

Seems good to me. It will definitely cut down on cheaters. If you don't want to connect a phone number then don't play competitive. It's good Valve is actually trying to cut down on cheaters (I'm assuming this is what they are trying to do).

Most people have phones, so Valve probably feels like it isn't that big of a deal to have people connect their phone.

Besides, they did give an option for them. Refer FAQ 3.

Basically they are setting up a barricade for cheaters. Phone numbers and paid access passes will limit the number of people who just create a new account and cheat again. Same idea as CS: GO never being on a crazy sale.

TF2 is notoriously known for having cheaters running rampant in the game, and having to go this route, is to help curb that mess.
I think it's a good idea, and helps to ensure that if you really want to play this game, you'll go through the extra steps.

It's a good idea, tbh. At least people won't cheat so much anymore, even if only in competitive.

The main reason they want your phone number is so they don't have to deal with cheaters, smurfs and account hackers as much. It kind of sucks, but it's understandable with so many people that feel the need to cheat or steal from others.

Any purchase from the Mann Co Store gives a premium account. I think I bought some random item for like £0.39 so it's not like that part would really lock anyone out. Or ypu could just buy a key - something that most people here would do at some point anyway.

It seems fine...but the cost of the premium membership seems more about making money than protecting players :s
What do you guys think?

When you cheat on an account with a connected phone number all accounts with that phone number are banned. AFAIK.
