Is there any danger in activating games through VPN?

I've got a key for Inversion which is apparently region locked to a bunch of countries, Australia unfortunately not being one of them. So I was wondering if using a US VPN to activate it could get me in trouble or even a potential ban from Steam or something dreadful like that.

Yes, it's a violation of Steam's TOS :/

They can ban you for it (to my knowledge)

It's against the Steam ToS. So if they find out, they'll screw your account. Better to not add one game than lose many.
