The English language is very strange. I've compiled a small list of errata, can I get a bug fix?

Games are selected from the last two Humble Monthly bundles. (There are some region restrictions on certain games.) GAs end on the 15th.
Standard sgtools rules apply.

Mood music

Solutions, part 1:
Q1: Pleasant sound from your child's room
(8, 8) Sounds like she's having fun.
daughter laughter

Q2: A possessed citrus
(5, 5) Some sugar water tames this devil.
demon lemon

Q3: An unrefined crucifix
(5, 5) It might also be covered in something repulsive.
gross cross

Q4: Stamps that someone refuses to return
(7, 7) Maybe he'd return them if we paid a ransom?
hostage postage

Q5: Dull product from a coffee shop
(5, 5) It's not very shiny. (And far from black. The typically American term for it. Hope that helps folks.)
matte latte

Q6: The bubbles atop a viking's mug
(4, 4) Smells like honey. (I'm told the word for the bubbles is not common outside of America/UK?)
mead head

Q7: One who more recently joined the quilting bee
(5, 5) She's learned how to thread a needle, at least.
newer sewer

Q8: What you use to press a doorbell
(6, 6) You may have to take your mittens off.
ringer finger

Q9: In the direction of the gutless
(7, 7) ((6, 6) also accepted) That direction seems to be away from the battle.
toward(s) coward(s)

Q10: The body part a wizard could least afford to injure
(4, 4) Well, he has another, but he's much more capable with that one.
wand hand

Completing part 1 revealed a train of 6 GAs, and part 2 (gating 6 more GAs):
Q1: An allotment of charge from a battery
(6, 6) We have to conserve the battery's chemicals, so that's all you'll get today.
cation ration

Q2: Pours off trigonometric functions
(7, 7) Don't fully invert the bottle, unless someone else co-signed the insurance. ;) (That wink means I've engaged in a little wordplay, rather than hinting exact meanings.)
decants secants

Q3: A brief respite, but totally aberrant
(5, 5) Alternatively, we really didn't expect that part of the machine to fracture.
freak break

Q4: A friendly rejection
(6, 6) Cleopatra is the queen of it. ;)
genial denial

Q5: A bet made over a drink
(5, 5) The stakes are high, but don't go pale. Maybe the drink will restore your amber complexion.
lager wager

Q6: A serviceman stationed in a more humid environment
(7, 7) If he's "stationary" in that environment, it will probably grow on him. ;)
moldier soldier

Q7: Contemplates amazing things
(7, 7) 7 is an apt number here.
ponders wonders

Q8: A gash in her makeup
(5, 5) She may have to touch up her ruby cheeks.
rouge gouge

Q9: A reduced price for nobility
(8, 8) Baron Trump isn't high enough to qualify. ;)

younger lounger

It occurred to me that I did not clearly state that the solutions do more than merely look like they should rhyme. They are actually identical except for the first letter. That's more restrictive, which may help you narrow your ideas faster. (I imagine many folks already figured that out, though.)

Sorry. If there are certain ones that are particularly hard for non-natives, I could add stronger hints. But I still do want it to be at least a little challenging for the natives. It's a hard balance to meet.

well, sad. I consider myself that I can speak english pretty well, but that gave me hard time, so i just read it and said: well, nothing here for me. So, have a nice day and good luck to all <3

Don't worry, it's hard for those perfectly fluent in English as well. :)

You might want to check with the OP before posting these kinds of spoilers.... Some might take issue 🙃

Yeah, could you scrub that comment please? You're closer than you may know. (In fact, I'll go edit it to allow that. You'll need to clear your cache/site cookie to enter it again, I think.)

Well, just missing 1 and 2 from part2... hints did nothing for me today. I'll check again tomorrow with a clear head.

design resign (?)

For me, I could say resign one of two ways, depending on the meaning I'm using. The stressed syllable and the S sound both change. So, given the proper context, that works.

Just missing Q1 of part 2. Could you share the answer once the puzzle is over? It's driving me mad.

Maybe plop down an answer and check in an hour when the hints reveal? They might make it doable for you.

One left, still escapes me, even with the hints.

And... done. :)

Finally got it! Really cool puzzle...that coffee one was kind of hard, probably impossible for non-native English speakers.

I now need more points. There were no trains (other than mine :D) for like a month, and now there are 4-5. lolz

Thanks again!

The adjective, noun, or both? I'll try to provide a more explicit hint for the part that's troublesome.

My English skills are pathetic (I even had to google what "quilting bee" is, and the translation wasn't exactly helpfull), only 5 guessed so far, but I'll definitely come back later for the hints.
Edit: 6 so far, still waiting for hints. I must say, that's a pretty exciting puzzle.
Edit: 7 so far, and I'm determined to guess them all, yeah.

Well, it was difficult enough to say something meaningful and on-topic. Making it also not rhyme seems a bit of an overkill for a bump. ;-)

Fun fact about your image there.
That guy was played by Tim Russ, who went on to play Tuvok in later Star Trek roles. He was also uncredited for that role in Spaceballs.

Not sure if I should invest more time on this. For most questions I needed a dictionary to understand them. But I couldn't solve anyone so far. Do I have to look for two answers which are identical but the first letter differs or do I search a single word as answer and then have to find a similar word which differs only with the first letter or is the answer always two words?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The answer consists of two words which only have a different first letter. The "Questions" hint partly on the first and the second word.

E. g. if the question would be "a dreamer gone crazy" the answer would be "loony moony" 😄 (But I think those two words rhyme, while the words you search for don't rhyme)

Permalink

Thanks. That helps.

All answers are two words, where the letters are the same except for the first, and they don't rhyme. For example, "come home". I provide a hint that identifies the phrase, like "arrive at your residence" to lead you to the answer. The ITH hints will give you the letter count and a second hint at the phrase. Keep in mind that the ten questions are arranged so that the answers are in alphabetic order. I have heard that has been very helpful for some folks.

I apologize if it doesn't work too well for some non-native English speakers/readers.

Mmm.. weird, when I looked at it yesterday I could see the hints on ITH but not today. (reload page, tried different browser)

EDIT: just tried again and they are displayed now. Thanks they are a great help.

Jesus, there's also a part 2. No way am I doing it today :)

Anyway, I just wanted to confirm that the puzzle was totally solvable even with my mediocre English skills, and hints were really helpful; shouldn't be too hard for a native speaker, I guess.
