Hi fellow steamgifters,
I have recently moved from Denmark to the United Kingdom and because of this I was trying to change my currency from Euros to British Pounds. I have contacted support, however they insist that I provide a British ID card or passport neither of which I have since I am a EU citizen and they are not required to live and work in the UK. Anyone who has any experience with this? and know if it would work to simply use a British credit card to add steam wallet funds and thus change it to pounds, as my steam wallet is currently empty - or would this not work?

Secondly, they are saying that I am still contacting them from Denmark however this is not the case and I do not understand why they would think this? I have copied and sent to support my "new browser" email that states that I am connecting from the UK but I don't know what else to do, since I am connecting from the UK but how does one prove that?

Sorry for the long text.

Kind regards

Bravey

Thanks a lot! Yeah it says UK as I would expect, I really don't know where Steam is getting that I'm still in Denmark from...Sadly I'm from within the EEA so I don't need a visa to enter or live here, I can freely enter without needing anything but my Danish passport. This is why it's a bit of a problem 'cause all my Danish documents are valid, I have no British ID to show Steam.

I've heard and Steam said it in the ticket that I may have trouble when trying to purchase stuff outside of my billing area which they believe to still be Denmark, when I try to use a credit card with a billing address in the UK.

This might sound (very) stupid but try to delete all your cookies and cached data. Also delete all steam files (except the game) and reinstall the client. Just a guess...

Don't need a visa for that either sadly.

I'm Portuguese and lived in the UK for a couple of years; I also had a lot of trouble getting things to work with Steam at that time and eventually it just got fixed at one point, I don't even really know what happened-- I'm guessing Steam support finally realised I was indeed living in the UK or something.
I wish I could be of more help, but Steam seems to have a really hard time understanding EU policies and people being able to freely move from country to country without the need of a visa or whatever. They need a better legal team as far as European client support is concerned.
Best of luck, mate! :)

Thanks a lot for your input :)
For now I'm just gonna try to get through to them via the tickets and see if they'll take a bank statement as proof...hopefully they'll get it eventually. Were you able to use a card with an English billing address to buy games though? Dreading the steamsale if I can't buy anything if I'm gonna get errors =/

In order to be able to buy stuff I actually had to use a paypal account with an email from Portugal and pay through there using my UK bank account to move funds and a lose a few cents each time due to conversion rates! It sounds and I'm sure it's pretty stupid and I don't even know if I should've that that, but I just know it worked, at least for me. Anyway, eventually they pulled their shit together and I could just pay whichever way I wanted to from then on.

There's still about a month or so left until the summer sale, so hopefully things will get sorted out for you before then :)

PS: your bank statement idea sounds like a good one. Can't hurt to try, at least!

Are you going to work/study in UK?
If so, wouldn't you have that ID card? o-o

Edit: Not sure if this is helpfull but.. I was in UK about an year ago (I am from India)... I was able to purchase with my debit card... I just had to give billing address of UK.. It wouldn't accept my address from india.. then again.. I never purchased on steam before that...

No. If you are born in the EU, you can live and work around the entire economic area without the need for country-specific ID. His Danish passport is all he needs.

Aye I will most likely get a student ID, only problem is that I'm not sure Steam would accept it, plus the fact that I wouldn't get it until September =/

Aye that's what I've heard too...really makes me wonder what on earth you're supposed to use as ID when you don't have a driver's license or passport

I have a similar issue as you. I live in Mexico (I was born in the UK) and I cannot change my account to a Mexican one until I prove that I work here, have a bank account, and that I have a Mexican passport. I do not work for a Mexican company, I work online for a US one, my bank account does not allow transactions other than pay-in or withdraw, and I probably wont ever get a Mexican passport.

It might be a pain, but you can open a new account and use that to buy things to gift to your real account until it gets sorted out. It'll take at least 15 days to clear the new account for payment, so if you want to make sure you can buy things in the summer sale you should start it now.

Thanks for the advice, if it comes to it, I'll probably just have my girlfriend buy and gift from her UK account - just wish I didn't have to go through all the hassle.

What currency do you see when you open the Steam store? Is only your wallet still in euros, or the whole store is?

1 decade ago

I see the store in British pounds but my wallet is still in euros.

Discard the wallet currency for now, have you tried purchasing anything and if so, what error does it give you?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Haven't been able to as of yet, as I haven't sorted my British bank account yet. However, I am expecting to get the error I keep seeing people talk about on the forums, where they won't be able to use a card outside of your original billing area.

Basically Steam payments work that way: your billing address, IP and Steam store link should match, in your case they all should be UK ones. Your IP is already UK, you have to put your current UK address as your billing one and you can use any debit card, prepaid card or paypal account (I believe you should open a separate UK paypal account for that purpose though, but I am not 100% sure here). I suppose your wallet currency will change by itself once you make your first successful transaction. You can never know before you try though.

I really hope it works like this, however I am doubtful as I have read a few posts by people in the same situation who have had a really hard time being able to purchase stuff from the store after they have moved countries, they keep getting errors and Steam continues to demand ID even it's completely bonkers to do so in the context.

There is no way to change currency by yourself. You need to provide your ID (or ask someone for their ID?). Like suggested before create new account and it will use pounds if created in UK. You won't be able to play region locked games before providing your ID so it's pain in a**. Another solution is to buy games from traders but region locked games rule works the same. Better find some way to get ID.

I'll keep trying to make support understand the issue over the ticket since getting an ID isn't so easy - luckily I don't think I even have any region locked games so that shouldn't be an issue, especially not since I just moved from Denmark to the UK, no region restrictions split those 2 countries as far as I know.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's not really true I believe. Empty wallet could be changed to the current store currency after you make a successful transaction with a new IP, billing address and a steam store link. Even more, there are virtually no region locked games neither for Denmark, nor for the UK. Region locked games can be from Russia, CIS, Brazil and sometimes Polish keys, but he has nothing to do with those countries.

Does the empty wallet and the new IP/billing address actually change your wallet currency? I keep seeing people suggest this, and then other people that counter them saying that it doesn't work and they should stop posting stuff that doesn't work.

I know friends who managed to make it work that way, even though that was long ago. There is nothing wrong with using Steam around the world as long as you do it legally. Since you are there now, in any case try my suggestion and see how it goes. Before you have tried none of us can tell you for sure if it will work or not (there is always the possibility that it doesn't work anymore if Steam changed the way your wallet and purchasing works, but I take it they hadn't done that recently).

I will certainly be trying it, thank you for your input btw - much appreciated. Just have to wait for my bank account to be sorted first and I'll find out (not expecting support to fix anything for me in that time, hah)

You don't need to inform the government in the UK as long as you are a citizen of the EEA :) The UK system is not as restricted as many other countries are.

You can get a Residence Permit, yeah, however it costs £55 and will not count as an ID - it will most likely not be accepted by Steam either, as I have heard they don't accept those types of documents. By sounds of things they are very "UK passport/driver's license" or get out.
