Related to the blacklist after pointing out you are breaking rules with your giveaway, it is because you are breaking rules. Makes sense, right? Seems like a pretty good reason.

Well, given I'm wanting nothing you offer anyway, I'm not. I'm simply explaining why you are blacklisted. Since you seem to think you deserve the chance to break site rules, because it is 'a test'. But it doesn't work that way.

Why the flying fuck are some people bitching about Facebook? So hard to make throwaway account to enter things like this?

Damn people are so pathetic beyond reasoning.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

well I didn't bitch - but when tasks are required I generally say no - as it is not real a giveaway then - it's work :) - also, I think some might get a bit frosty cause I think cg (site owner of SG) said no more task related links allowed - but I always forget where the damn link is to that thread to confirm it - in my mind though, each to their own :-P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I believe the rule is no more joining groups to get key. Task related links are still good atm.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

then why was there a ban on gleam - which are all task related ? just curious is all :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because most Gleam GAs are "join this group", "join that group", cg just got lazy and banned it altogether. Then right after that Steam stepped in and marked all Gleam links on their websites as spam so Gleam shut down Steam GAs for good. Since then, no more Gleam on SG.

The funny thing is, Indiegala GAs are still allowed (!?). The only task it requires is to join their group.

Permalink

fair point, well made - I still avoid task based ones these days, as it is more work than we care to put into it :-) - we d0 put a link on our giveaways, and we are always happy if people visit, but it is not mandatory to do so to enter our giveaways :) (but that is just us)

should not

This makes the difference. "Should not" doesn't equal "must not". Afaik, some must-not's are ref links, forcing users to join a Steam group, and other things relating to monetary benefit. Anything else seems to be okay, or at least they don't make yourself banned.

And your point is? All I can see from your URL is cg politely asking users not to post similar links to the website. He doesn't explicitly say that doing so is against the rules. There is no suspension for such action.

Here is the wording for a "must-not". It's substantially different from a "should-not":

Referral links are not allowed in the community

In real life, you should not swear in public. Doing so is obviously not good, but there is no rule against it (unless you live in Singapore). On the other hand, you must not drive when you are drunk. Doing so is not good, and also violating the laws, which leads to punishment. That's the difference between "should not" and "must not".

Seriously, I think I understand how English is used better than you native speaker.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Likewise, you should not drive when drunk, because it is against the law. As someone who lives in an English-speaking country I can tell you that "should not" is far and away the most prevalent terminology used for this statement, despite your assertion that "must not" be used in its place because it is against the law (rules). As such, "must not" does not necessitate a punishment or particular consequence any more than "should not" does, whether in this or any number of other statements in the English language. The fact that you want to make this the case is simply you putting your own personal arbitrary and misguided spin on the wording. As I said previously, the only practical difference between the two merely comes to down to the perceived harshness, severity, and/or tone of the wording, not the reasoning or end result thereof (i.e. something being against the law/rules). The two terms are used interchangeably throughout the English language, even going so far back as something like the translation of the Ten Commandments of God. You can think whatever you like but you would be wrong, and you have 3 different people here telling you otherwise. As I live in the United States and was raised in an English-speaking country, while your Steam profile purports you to be in Vietnam, my level of expertise in this matter is the one that will be taking precedence.

Comment has been collapsed.

I highly doubt that being a native speaker makes whatever you say about the language "truer" than mine. What if I tell you I have a Master Degree in English Language? Will that make my level of expertise higher than yours? :)

"Should not" and "must not" are by no mean equal, and cannot be used interchangeably. The use of "should not" is much softer than "must not", as while "must not" implicates "prohibition", "should not" implicates "dissuasion". As "must not" is often too severe for daily use, people tend to pick "should not" instead. This leads to your misconception that "should not" and "must not" can be used to describe similar meanings. In legal documents, you will never see the word "should (not)", only "must (not)" and "shall (not)".

I believe that in the "Ten Commandments of God", they used the word "shalt", which is an old form of "shall". And "shalt/shall not" is quite a strong expression, much closer to "must not" than you think.

Also, when people say "you should not drive when drunk", it shows that they actually condone the act of drunk driving to an extent (because sometimes it is unavoidable - we all know some friends that once drove after having a couple of drinks), or they don't have the authority to stop the person they are talking to (so they try to dissuade him/her), or they are simply giving advice.

It's a long-time complaint, but they didn't change on the wording. Shouldn't = mustn't on this site. Just check the rules, everything is said with "should", even though the punishment is obviously suspension.
( Mustn't is considered extremely rude in some regions as overdoing it, hence they don't use it for rules)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If it really has been a complaint then it must be by people who do not understand the nuances of the English language. Anyway it's not really rude, it's just SG being unnecessarily meek on the wording.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

From the Guidelines and the Suspension Permissions, I can see that most suspensions apply when the guidelines say "do not" or "not allowed" or other stronger wordings. Only a few of those should-not's are ban-able, some of them are obvious (regifting, non-Steam games, beta keys, etc.). The rest of them may fall into the "Inappropriate Behavior" case, which is really ambiguous. And I rarely see anyone get suspended for "inappropriate behavior" on this site.

Terms in the English language like should "should not" and "must not" are very closely related. The only real difference is the perceived severity and/or harshness of their tone, not the meaning. Whether you say "should not " or "must not" the meaning is clear - it's a warning: DO NOT do this. For the intents and purposes of this site (and frankly most practical applications) "should not" and "must not" are one and the same.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope. "Should not" may mean a warning, but "must not" means obligation. "Should not" is politely asking people not to do something, and the term doesn't imply that it is obligatory. I haven't seen any cases where users get banned for sharing links that is task-related, and even the links don't often get removed, ever.
