I don't know if I'm missing something but I don't really get/understand the Steam Trading Cards. What do they do? Why do we have them? Does it help the grass to grow, the sun to shine? Is this darkness in you, too?

"Free" if you do not value your time whatsoever. Otherwise, you are MUCH better off hocking minimum wage.

With free I meant that I get games without spending money just for running a program in background when I'm on my
PC anyway. Or even worse: when I'm actually playing a game.

But I mean, even if you work and have hobbies and friends sometimes you play games too, or you wouldn't be a member of a gaming forum. It gives both valve, you, & (sometimes) the developers free money, and entertains those with mild OCD or collection/imaginary status symbol fetishes. It's not really that bad to have the option, or ability for the devs to include them. No one demands cards from games, same as achievements.

They're given when you're playing the games you own, if you think playing games is a waste of time then why buy them ?

I'm not knocking their intention, simply the premise that there is viable "profit" to be had post-beta. I should have illustrated, my bad

Maybe I was a little too vague. I understand the concept/what they are. I just don't understand why you would pay for them I guess? I was wondering if there was any reward for completing a set/collection? You know, a reason to make it all worthwhile I suppose?

Maybe I'm just too old for this?

Well, you don't need to buy them per-say. The idea of Trading Cards if to trade the ones you don't need for the ones you want. It's more or less a community game. You don't need to do it. Apart from the stuff mentioned in it's description on Steam or... y'know, the fact that you can just sell all your cards, there is no other benefit. :)

Thanks for that, that was basically what I was after.

As an aside I have yet to encounter someone from Edinburgh who wasn't really nice/helpful. You have continued this trend and expanded it into internet land. Good on you.

Actually, I'm from Bulgaria (just living in Edinburgh right now). We could be helpful too... usually. :D

Money for you.
Money for Valve. (Steam transaction fee = 5%)
Money for the respective game developer. (Game fee = 10%)

I don't get it, how does valve make money that it made itself? Or the developer, for that matter.

Is valve just constantly making money, essentially causing the inflation of the Steam Dollar?

They're inflating the value of the cards (and thereby the games featuring cards), not the currency itself.

They were created to give OCD game players something to do. They went from, "sell this on the market for a fair price", to "that card is selling for .10c , I'll sell mine for .08 c "...and repeated until all cards sell for 3 to 5 cents.

Same thing happens with TF2 items and CSGO items. The CSGO crates started at 1.30. Now down to 50c with tax.

I wouldn't really call £0.40 a "fair price". I'd be much more inclined to say it was a ridiculous price. Sure, for the seller it might be nice since it gave them a large amount of easy free cash, but it was really a ridiculously high price considering all the cards do is give you a showcase each 10 levels, emoticons, a background and a coupon(sometimes useful, but most of the time it's kinda meh). Having bought cards for an average of about £0.10 normally(Haven't paid a penny into the Steam wallet ever), I'd reckon that's a pretty fair price.

They're trading cards. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. When you get a full set you can choose to craft a badge and get a coupon, emoticon and background for you Steam profile.
