I won't go into details, but basically trying to find an anime for a person who generally doesn't watch anime. He doesn't have an specific genre, though from what I know lets stay away from fan-services ones :v

Looking for an Action/adventure or a thriller anime. Said person prefers if it's in Dub.

I was thinking for a first-timer FMA:Brotherhood as that has a good Dub in my opinion.

Help!

I think Cowboy Bebop would be a good choice.

It's really episodic and the characters can seriously grate depending on your tastes. On the off-chance that they decide to see the whole series through, the ending and climax can also come across as hollow. It had so much potential but it sorta whiffled, IMO. Then again, I tend to binge-watch series of all kinds, so Cowboy Bebop might work better if you only watch one episode every few days? I unno.

I agree. It kind of feels like a Slice of Life so maybe someone that is not into anime won't feel compelled to watch more than 2 episodes.
It can't get any more noob friendly than FMA tbh.

I wouldn't know. I bought the whole original FMA series boxset but it turned out to be a bootleg that had unofficial subtitles and no dub option. I still loved it, but when the names keep changing it can be hard to follow. It was only in the second half of the series that I even realised the homonculi were named after the seven deadly sins. I will never forget Guru Tony or Mr Manstank/Mantank (Gluttony and Mustang. They weren't even the worst of the subtitles, because I bought several boxsets in one go, back when I first got access to broadband and ebay way back when.

Imagine Elfen Lied with this weird phonetic subtitling, only so terrible that they even added subtitles for crying... which read as "hoot hoot hoot". Or subtitles for a puppy barking, which read as "doggy, doggy doggy". I think I even still have those old things buried away somewhere. If I wasn't so lazy I might take screenshots of em.

I really should look into the new FMA series though. Or hell, just the original FMA at 720p+ and with subtitles that didn't dip into absurdity.

The original FMA is quite nice, regardless of not being canon. And those names lol i feel bad for you.
And yes, you really should watch FMA Brotherhood. No fan service shit like most animes nowdays, the plot is excellent with good animation. A must watch indeed.

Not well at all. I don't think most old animes aged all that well. I tried to rewatch some animes that i liked "back in the day" and i thought they were super boring now =(

These are very good entry level anime. Other than that maybe Onepunch man and Boku no Hero Academia are a bit more lighthearted and easy to get into

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

As great as Jojo is, that may be a bit... difficult for them as a starting anime. Like One Punch Man, I feel a decent amount of depth is lost without knowing more context by which the series exists, in jojo's case, the context by which a lot of other anime's exist. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood probably is a safer bet all things considered, or as suggested by AgentCH above: Cowboy Bebop.

Black Lagoon or Trigun, could be good ones to start.
Monster is a well-reviewed thriller, same with Psycho-Pass.
The Ghost Stories Dub is pretty funny. (I could go with this one first if they have a sense of humor)
Code Geass and Gurren Lagann are awesome.

Ghost in the shell is a classic.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why not a movie, is a lot easier to convince someone to sit down to watch a movie than an entire season of a series. Maybe a classic like Ghost in the Shell, Akira or any film by Satoshi Kon.
Also if you go for FMA I think the first series is a better introduction, Brotherhood kinda assumes that you already know the basics of the plot.

I agree a movie is the way to go. Even though a series has better character development, a movie is more digestible. As for a movie, there have been so many people who say they don't watch anime because it is a cartoon and cartoons are for kids. So, for those people the first movie I show them is Grave of the Fireflies, it it great to shake up peoples thoughts of Anime, then I move them to Princess Mononoke, then Akira.

It is kinda slow paced I admit and it can be boring to some, I guess all I can say is that it clicks with me (there's plenty of reviews and analisis that explain it better).
Just in case, you're talking about the original right? The 2.0 re-release is not as good, and no, GitS 2.0 and GitS 2: Innocence are not the same movie and there's also a 2015 one called the exact same as the first but it's actually a prequel. Their naming system is a confusing mess actually.

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, I'm talking about the original from 1995. I just don't get it personally. I see what they were trying to do with it, but personally it didn't seem very deep to me and it just felt like a samey concept I've seen before. The art is good, the concept seemed interesting, and I like the soundtrack, but it just didn't do it for me.

Well that's the nature of pretty much any work of fiction, in the end it boils down to taste and no piece of media is going to work for everybody.
If I had to guess I would say that it was just what I was looking for at the start of this decade when I was getting back into anime after not paying much attention since the (very) early 2000s, I was for the first time watching the stuff aimed at an older audience instead of the kid's shows I enjoyed in the nineties and GitS was the right type of gateway. Although the movie that actually re-awakened my interest was Paprika, I just cought it on TV one night and it basically got me into the whole thing singlehandedly, the rest were just confirmations that there was more there to be seen.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know for sure, but right around the same time I saw GitS I had also seen the Matrix for the first time so that may have skewed my perception of this film considering that Matrix was inspired by GitS. I might have to re-watch GitS at some point. I really want to like it. But I do agree, not every piece of media can work for everybody. The film, the Godfather, considered one of the greatest films of all time, was one of the most boring movies I'd ever seen.

You know, I had that same impression on my first watch, but on the second time through, I enjoyed it a lot more. I think when you're not trying to follow the plot so much, it's a lot easier to enjoy the visual style.

I'd say a good one is One Punch Man. I barely watch animes (Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Captain Tsubasa, Mazinger Z and a couple others back in the day) but after watching One Punch Man I've been looking at some more.

I'd agree you can't go wrong with FMA for a good show. Just make sure you aren't trying to convince someone to watch anime, but that they're actually interested in checking it out. :D

+1 for Trigun. Aside from the other suggestions, maybe something borderline-anime such as the new Castlevania series or Avatar? If space/mechs aren't out then possibly Knights of Sedonia...it wasn't bad (there was a small amount of fan service but it was much much less than many other series IMO). If swords and magic is more their thing, maybe Claymore (I don't recall there being much fan service there but it's been awhile).

Edit: Oops missed the part about Dubs. Not sure which of those are dubbed... I am the opposite and only watch it subbed so I don't really pay attention to if its dubbed or not. I think Claymore is though as I heard about it from a friend that only watches dubbed stuff.

Hajime no Ippo ("The First Step") is a bit of a risk, but it can quickly grow on a person. An anime about boxing sounds dumb but actually works nicely, IMO. The humor and drama blends nicely with the overarching career and fights, and while it does go for typical anime exaggeration it has a grounding in reality. I don't know about any dubbed version, given I watched it subtitled sooo... \:3/

Monster. Absolutely Monster. It doesn't even particularly look animeish. Fantastic story and characters, but a bit on the long side. I highly recommend it to anyone in the mood for a good narrative.

My personal favorite anime is probably Kino's Journey, though picking an ultimate favorite is always hard. Kino's Journey isn't too long and I think it would appeal to people who don't like anime. I actually want to show it to my father sometime; he doesn't dislike anime (actually has liked several Miyazaki movies), but isn't usually too interested in them. I think he'd like this one. Maybe not your friend since I don't know his tastes, but hey, tossing out suggestions. =)

Other than those two, I think that Baccano! might be a good bet. I love it, just not sure how someone who doesn't like anime might take to a couple of the elements. The dub is my favorite dub, I can at least say that much. (I haven't seen Cowboy Bebop yet, though, and I hear that dub's really good too. I know, I know, shame on me, I'll get to watching it at some point. =P)

Attack on Titan, it's also the 1st anime i watched.

I see many people suggest old shows, which I don't think new people gonna like, I know they have great stories, but graphic quality is just kind of bad with old art style not so eye-catching, so just leave them for later, visual usually is the first thing we notice, unless they're nostalgia type, if I suggest something for someone, I want they have a good impression at first sight first.
