I rarely follow gaming news, but what I did follow, for years, was the Escapist magazine. Possibly one an outlet with the weirdest history, it was growing, then fell apart over the GamerGate controversy, was relaunched... and it seems that it going away and possibly spawning a spiritual successor.

Beacuse it looks like parent company Gamurs fired editor in chief, and a lot of contributors, including Yahtzee, are leaving in solidarity:

Update 11/7/23, and some personal comments:

It looks like most of the video creators have followed Nick and Yahtzee, and they are creating a new outlet called Second Wind and will continue doing what they do best there.

So for all, who, like me, have fond opinions of these creators, there's you spot to follow. Thanks @SeriousPain and @Nudiustertian for pointing me there.

For those who don't share my fond memories with the Escapist, either by disagreeing, or simply not being aware what and who am I talking about, let me share my piece.

The Escapist, or Escapist Magazine made me the gamer I am today. It was the first, and most of the time my only and sufficient source for news, opinion pieces, reviews, essays, on gaming, movies, and to a lesser extent pop culture in general.

It was on escapist where I found most of my favorite creator in games reviews (ZP), movie reviews (MovieBob and Darren Mooney), video game industry commentary (The Jimquisition), game design (Extra Credits, JM8, the late Shamus Young), and last but not least, music (Miracle of Sound).

Over the years, some creators came, some went, but the quality, the insight, and well, the snark was always there.
The site basically died for a year or so in 2017, but came back swinging, called back past experienced creators, hired new ones, branched out.

And now they're down again, but only as a brand it seems, the people are there, they will be working together further on.
Games development is full of stories about "former members of studio xxx" forming new brand to continue working on what they did best.
I hope this time we'll see that it can also work in games journalism, that it is the people, the authors (and good Editor in Chief) that matter, not the brand.

Update 11/9/23

I've watched Second Wind's livestream and the gist is:
All of the video creators left the Escapist, including the the producers, artists, etc.

Their content under the same name where possible, or under new name where IP belonged to the Escapist will be now posted on the Second Wind youtube channel.

Zero Punctuation goes back to FullyRamblomatic name.

A lot of regular shows will come out in 2-week cadence.

There will be a separate channel for livestreams and podcasts.

The whole enterprise will be funded independently, via Patreon, Paypal donations, sponsorships, youtube memberships and superchats.

The last, slightly sadder, news - they are not planning on building any dedicated website. All of the content will be available on YT mostly (streams will be on Twitch as well)

he is one of the team that left on their own following Nick - it really looks like most off the talent left. SO I expect to see most of the content somewhere

Good to see someone else made this thread, I saw the news last night but didn't want to start a thread myself because of how messy and weird the whole thing is.
I've been watching ZP for many years and to see it end so suddenly is really shocking. The new owners at The Escapist were clearly only after the money with how hard they were pushing for ads recently, taking completely tone deaf sponsorships for the videos, but I never expected them to be so dumb as to fire Nick after the guy basically rebuilt the magazine after it collapsed some years ago.
It's also quite sad to see Frost out of a job mere weeks after he got hired full time, that dude is quite good at the whole opinion piece thing. Or how 3MR had just been spun into its own channel at the start of the month.
I wonder if the videos lined up for this week were already uploaded and programmed to come out automatically or if they'll end up as lost media, since I imagine The Escapist is functionally over now and when the team relaunches under a new name they'll no longer have the IPs to the old content.

and probably the end of Zero Punctuation

I'm not afraid of this personally, Yahtzee carried the whole Escapist on his shoulders for years, and nowadays I only found the Cold Take(?) as a new and worthwhile content there. Yahtzee IS Zero Punctuation, and they can absolutely form a new site/magazine with the already existing youtube and patreon support. I wish the best for all of them

Yahtzee IS Zero Punctuation

but turns out he doesn't own the rights, so yeah, I'm expecting he'll continue doing his job, as will others

I'd bet my left nut more people are interested in whatever Yahtzee does that's not called as Zero Punctuation, than they are in a show called Zero Punctuation but without Yahtzee

Yep, that's that.

They are on 3rd season right now.
This time they met up and recorded live, not over zoom or whatever

It'll be the end of the title "Zero Punctuation" since they don't have the rights to that, but Nick, Yahtzee & co. are all moving to their own little corner where they can continue doing what they did without their idiot overlords. The rest of whoever is left at the Escapist will almost certainly follow, or go back to their own channels if they came from elsewhere.

Note that I know nothing about the people who fired Nick or why, but I tentatively conclude they're idiots based on not being able to gauge the impact of their actions.

They sure look like ones. I find it especially funny considering that escapist went through some weird stuff over the years, including several years, when it was ONLY Zero Punctuation and probably some admin to keep the site running, but only now higher ups managed to fail hard enough to make Yahtzee leave.

I'm excited for what comes next

Zero Punctuation is a popular video game review series on YouTube that created a style that influenced a lot of other YT channels like Extra Credits and CGP Grey.
The Escapist had other stuff, some of it is good, but ZP is the one everyone knows.

ZP is where the "Glorious PC Gaming Master Race" phrase and meme originated

Also multiple year's worth of weekly satiric, snarky but accurate reviews by this point of time, you found the single loathsome thing from the channel that doesn't make anybody more interested in it lol

edit: sorry, I mainly just meant that it's not reflective to their values, nor their content. It's basically a picture of years' worth of content, insight and personality, with anything meaningful stripped of it. (I fucking hate what that meme has become, because some people missed the memo that it was satiric)

It was my elevator pitch :) thanks for expanding.

And I agree completely - the meme started its own life, well, that's what meme's do
I've hopefully expanded on their content and my opinion on it in the OP edit.

Also, speaking of values, tbh, I never got what exactly happened there during the gamergate time. Do you know of any write-up about how it unfolded?

Do you know of any write-up about how it unfolded?

I only have faint memories, and even then a lot of unfunded things were circulating, so my knowledge is basically worthless ^^

A lot of people don't seem to know that The Escapist now has very little to do with the Escapist that had the controversy, or that Nick has basically resurrected that site and YT channel and in more recent years ZP was no longer the one and only reason to go there.
And now they lost it all. The entire video team left and is joining Nick on Second Wind

...I feel empty.

Well, let's see what series Yahtzee makes to replace it. (I'm not gonna hold my breath on the retards that had the bright idea of firing the guy whom everyone likes giving up the IP.)

They fired the editor-in-chief (and some others) Yahtzee (and some others) left because of solidarity, if I remember correctly what I read a few busy hours ago :)

Yeah, that's what I meant- they fired Nick, the guy whom everyone (as in, everyone making videos on the Escapist) likes, so naturally those everyone quit, including Yahtzee.
(Although I gotta wonder if firing people in general would have still caused this, no matter who got fired.)

They used to be more popular many years ago but since then Zero Punctuation became the only well known thing they had and they just lost it. It was a very popular and influential series of videos on their YouTube.

if you're asking, yeah you should 😆
they are around for over 15 years, never got to be IGN or Kotaku, or Polygon big, but delivered solid quality over the years.
The archive of the content is still there, try watching Zero Punctuation for a game you like, or even better, was disappointed by, it'll be the best way to get a feel of their stile.

While SeriousPain is right that ZP was the only well known thing they did, they did do more - movie reviews, 3-minute game reviews, design analysis videos

So I was just checking my subscriptions page on youtube and noticed that in the last couple of hours every single Escapist video that had been uploaded before the whole collapse but haven't gotten released is now released, so now the last two Zero Punctuation videos are live... but the comments are disabled. There's also another three videos one of which is a Cold Take.

If anything at least we're getting proper closure and a cleaner cut in the transition to Second Wind, BTW the new channel and rebranded/rebooted shows have been very strong so far,

They don't call it proper closure at the SecondWind discord, but yeah, escapist released what they have.
The only "lost" videos now are the remaining Adventure is Nigh (D&D campaign) episodes

I don't use Discord but I did read the comments in the community post by the Escapist announcing the release of this last batch of videos and let's just say that they aren't exactly friendly, I think some people are missing the fact that the people dealing with this are almost certainly the remaining employees from the website side of the company, not the suits that caused this whole debacle.
Last I heard the guys at Second Wind were still negotiating with Gamurs about what was going to happen with the remaining episodes of Adventure is Nigh, so those might take longer to surface, assuming they were actually edited and ready for release.

As an aside, Yahtzee said during the Monday podcast that the next Fully Ramblomatic was on Spider Man 2, but now the ZP on the same title is released. I wonder if he'll just go ahead and cover the game twice or scramble to replace it with something else.

Yeah, I saw the community post after writing my reply here, makes sense that they want to avoid conflicts right now.

Kinda hate the fact that youtube rarely shows me any community post on desktop, I have to go check the app on my phone if I want to see those.
