Everspace - https://store.steampowered.com/app/396750/EVERSPACE/

This game is a true gem. The graphics are simply stunning, probably among the most spectacular space game around. The gameplay is simple and direct, just hop in and fly/combat your ship with just M+KB. Even if it's a Roguelite, it actually has a story which progresses with each run. And the random generated sectors are so varied that even after 10 hours of gameplay you keep running into new awesome things.

To anyone interested, I visited Groupees like a week ago (haven't been there forever) and it turned out I have a Steam key for this game in my library there. Must have been included in a bundle as a DRM-free or unfinished product years ago.

Nearly 20k reviews despite only having come out last month.
Prominently featured on the Steam News as one of October's Top Releases by revenue.
Hidden gem. What.

It did not come out last month, the game is from september 2019, but it came out of early access last month. When the 1.0 release happens Steam changes the release date to the 1.0 one.

Hey someone posted Hollow Knight above and it has over 100k reviews...
and the person replied they have never seen it before, so I thought it would work as a hidden gem.

@Noobiu
Yeah the Hollow Knight post was also...pretty out there, but there's already been a bunch of comments so I didn't feel like there was any point in joining in on that. ^ ^;

@Charlie22
Point taken. I usually ignore EA because I'm not too fond of the concept as it has developed, but that does stretch the amount of reviews out somewhat. Of course, games still make the biggest splash when going live, as evidenced by the Top Releases feature(which is in no way affected by prior sales), so my original point remains.

Just gonna recommend Ninjin again because it's that good. At 80% off this is a no-brainer if you even remotely like what you see on the trailers.

86% off, only 9 reviews accounted and, from what I played of it in the Switch (at least 5 hours and with around half the colletibles obtained), it seems pretty good:

The Creeper World series are some of the most entertaining and original strategy games on Steam, and don't get nearly enough attention. The first two are ridiculously cheap:

Found another one today =D
75% off and 28 accounted reviews. Just mind it's a precision platformer AND a roguelike, so you'll be dying A LOT. Also, the Itchio version comes with both the standalone game and a Steam key.

Gato Roboto - https://store.steampowered.com/app/916730/Gato_Roboto/ A nice, simple and cute metroid-like game which is not very hard but have a polished gameplay, a nice story and lovely graphics (if you love 2D gameboy like graphics)

Hand of Fate - https://store.steampowered.com/app/266510/Hand_of_Fate/ A boardgame roguelike with a mocking gamemaster. I personally absolutely love the ambiance of the game. I don't recommend the second one because it's clearly not as good.

2064 Read only Memories - https://store.steampowered.com/app/330820/2064_Read_Only_Memories/ A point and click in a cyberpunk setting where you have to investigate. Every dialogue is dubbed, the story flows really well with no "stupid" enigma some point and click have so, it's not frustrating, just highly enjoyable. And again if you like pixel graphics, it's a really pretty game.

Superbrother's Sword and Sworcery EP - https://store.steampowered.com/app/204060/Superbrothers_Sword__Sworcery_EP/ Another point and click game but there is little to no dialogue here. It's all about the ambiance and the music. Fantasy setting, pixel graphics, gorgeous music.

Titan Souls - https://store.steampowered.com/app/297130/Titan_Souls/ I would say it's a Zelda like game mixed with Dark Souls in terms of ambiance and difficulty. It's extremely difficult yet extremely rewarding. Again pixel graphics and it's a boss-rush game.

Secrets of Raetikon - https://store.steampowered.com/app/246680/Secrets_of_Rtikon/ A metroid/vania game where you are a bird that have to collect cristals. Nice ambiance and physics.

Well, that's all from me. Maybe you already guessed, but I LOVE pixel graphics games XD

I'm currently playing Fae Tactics and having a lot of fun with it. I'm a big fan of FFT and Tactics Ogre and this game worth checking out.
Fae Tactics

Two more titles that are a lot of fun that I play on and off.
Risk Of Rain 2
Streets Of Rogue

Oh and the Safe In Our World 1st Anniversary Charity Bundle on Fanatical is an awesome pickup. I've only played Gris and Avicii Invector out of the games in the bundle but both are great. All funds go to a great cause also.

BIG +1 for Streets of Rogue, it is an absolute gem, and the devs have done such a great job updating it with new content. Always fun and unpredictable enough to feel fresh, with a nice level of challenge. It's one of those games I know I'll be coming back to again and again for years to come.Love it.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/321980/Hardland/

This game deserves so much more attention ! Definitely a hidden gem !
A great open world RPG, one of a kind. You have to pay attention to everything you discover, to everything you read. Otherwise, you will be lost. Playing with a notepad or making screenshots is recommended ! There is no quest log, no quest marker, you have to remember everything, every detail matters. I loved his universe, his visual style. I played this game more than 40 hours and there are still things that I have to discover. This is an historical low since it was officially released (was cheaper during EA), so it's a really nice deal if you are not afraid to only count on yourself.

That was one of the most confusing / enlightening review sections I've ever read on Steam! I think it sounds like I would enjoy the game, but it also sounds equally likely that I may hate it! :D Wishlisted for now.

3 years ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Exactly, this is not a game for everyone. You can love it for the same reasons you might hate it ! I love not being guided like in any other RPG, counting only on myself, but I admit I had to look for hints on Reddit or Steam discussions sometimes, when I was really stuck. So I also understand that some players will hate this particularity of the game. Your best bet is to try it out, play for less than 2 hours, and ask a refund if you don't like it.
Completing quests and finishing the game is even more satisfying than in any other game that has a quest log and markers that tell us where to go.

As the game description says : "No matter how small something seems, it might hold the key to understanding a bigger mystery. Hardland is a world that reveals itself when you pay attention and piece together its lore."

Have fun if you ever decide to try it ! 😀

This is the first time I've heard of this game, but what caught my attention the most from what you said was that "playing with a notepad is recommended" I love that aspect to be honest. It's very refreshing from other games, and I enjoy trying to solve things for myself. I'm adding it to my WL for now but thanks for bringing it to my attention!

You are welcome ! I agree, this is really refreshing, and I think I should have said “necessary” instead of recommended, unless you have large memory skills.
Many people have not heard of this game. I don't remember how I found it, but I'm glad I did.
