Would you recommend it to others?
Me neither, but I'm opened to try games that have sparked some sort of interest, even if they are mediocre by reviews.
The other way around though: Way too many...
It has to do a lot with how much a game is hyped and when you actually play it, you'll end up just not vibing with it as you expected it to.

below,i read many bad review but then play it and i still enjoy, very beautiful game for me,but i play in survival mode.

yes this, the game at start make you feel mad, because not know nothing about the enviroment and how the game work, there is no tutorial and many times easy die,but at everytime you back and retry play you learn something new that will help you to play better etc.
still like much, also the enviroment is not "normal" there is some "lights" logics that make the island be unique also about the monsters etc,but at the start you don't know this so it is very hard and must learn more things, but + learn and then + you can go next
top of all this the game it's playable also with old gpus same as the 750ti..it's not more heavy.
The only bad thing is
-the cam is very far, disturb eyes,so you must make "habit" to it
-the game have a black\dark color that is not normal, can't see anithing even if you build torch etc. (at least with my monitor) so i has need use "Reshade" for fix it by apply some filters (more than 1) and make my personal light\colors then i can see so much better (you can see how i see it on my channel search inside my channel "below" i not want post link because not want do spam and\or abuse of this platform, then you see the link "Level3" name you can see my light colors is much better than the default game with reshade)

hhmm better if buy when discount 80% because it's very hard to be liked, and very hard to play, and have problem about camera very very far can't see well and much dark must use reshade, but game i like much.
Also consider that maybe is short game, maybe can finish it in 1 month.

yepp, doubling this one
this is so weird that this game have so much hate, it looks like it missed its target audience somehow....everybody crying about how hard it is, but it's not. But it is slow, and you would hate it if you are not ready to that. Video in the begging is a good hint to the pacing. Atmosphere of exploration is strong here.

Same as the person above, I don't buy games I think I won't enjoy, I mean I can still be surprised that it's even better than I expected, but if I expect it to be meh or worse I rather not get the game at all.
To many games though, look great, but tend to not be great at all in the end, but yeah, you would need way to many pages if you would write all those down :P

Also none. I'm pretty sure I know what I like really well. I do have a solid list of games that were pure disappointment, though

Everhood from the recent Choice (won here), it has a cool story and lore mixed with one of the dullest battle systems. Risk of Rain 2, which is in every nonaesthetical way inferior to 1 (adding unnecesary metaprogression, much more clutter, enemies even bullet spongier than in 1) but for some reason people gush over it and seem to forget that 1 even exists. Steamworld Quest, I really like all other Steamworld games and card games in general, but it turned out to be an jRPG with bonus "swap deck to waterbased when fighting a water sensitive enemy" chores. Also Pyre, but this is entirely on me. If it had english voice acting and autoprogress in dialogues, it'd be great, I just can't focus on pure text enough

I don't blame you. I personally don't like the overall looks of the game. But I'm willing to overcome that aspect.3

I've never been into it to be fair, I don't know if I'd enjoy it as much as some people claim to do. But again, it might end up in the list I started this discussion from.

I've not been aware of the JRPG one.

I thought I'm one of the few. I hate heavy basted text games. I am lazy to read them, even if the game itself is a 10/10 on most charts. I prefer audiobooks over regular books for that reason. I keep getting distracted and easily bored if I keep reading, besides I can't focus on other stuff if that's the case.

Oh I got some. Pretty much the whole orange juice series, so suguri 1-3, sora, qp shooting, xmas shooting, flying red barrel. I don't like bullet hell games so I was not looking forward to them. I brought them purely because I wanted some lore behind the multiplayer game. I'm not gonna say I absolutely loved it but it was nice not hating them as much as I expected. I actually did enjoy them the 1st go round before the grinding started to happen.
I'm also saying Megaman. I know people love megaman but for me it was never really my style of game. I got it because I kinda wanted to know what it was about. They haven't all been amazing but I did end up enjoying a few of them. So far I've done 1 to 10
For me my bad games are what are typically loved by others. It tends to be the most interesting games that end up being disappointing

This is why I enjoy to see what people share, because each gamer has a different experience with games. That's why debates always arise for games the majority enjoy or spark in popularity.
Sometimes giving it a try and realizing that you actually thought different of the game is a lot better than jumping in a game you're well aware that you're over hyped and end up being disappointed of technical or other issues it has.

For me it probably has to be The Crew! I have always been a sucker for arcade racing games, and the original The Crew was the very first open world arcade racing game I have ever played (I guess NFS 2015 technically also is an open world racing game, but they just don't feel the same...). I came into the game not expecting much--from reviews and let's plays I've heard people complaining about the handling of many cars "like a boat", and the entire physics/handling aspect of the game is just terrible. There is also very tedious escape missions (similar to getting rid of your stars in GTA) and chasing missions (where you have to bump into the target car multiple times until it dies), etc etc... which I dreaded for. Not to mention rubber banding. UGH.
Turns out that all of those things don't matter and I fucking loved the game. I can literally ignore the main/side missions and travel through all of America, and discover hidden car parts and collectibles to finish the map. The Most Wanted-style racer-police collaboration and revenge storyline is cheesy but also charming in its own way. I still despise the controls and the races to this day, but this is genuinely one of my personal favorites of all time.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hahahaha it definitely is a bit of a 'polarized' series, both the original The Crew and The Crew 2 actually. The original game is not getting updates anymore so I don't know if it is as worth as the second game, but despite being from the same series, The Crew 1 and 2 have radically different content and playstyle. Luckily both games often go on sale (TC1 for 75% off, TC2 for 80% off), so if you have some extras left from a steam sales it won't hurt to try em out lol.

The crew 1 servers are a bit hmm... lagging ? The servers are still up but not in a very good condition as the game is very old.
Play it if you can find it cheap, worths it for the story but don't expect the servers to live forever.

Super Panda Adventures - I thought it was just going to be some cheap GameMaker project someone made real quick, but I ended up enjoying it a lot. It was a decent metroidvania with good progression of weapons, upgrades, and unlockable areas.
I had a similar experience with Cally's Caves 3.
I thought Dropsy looked kind of like a joke, but it ended up being a really good game.

Star Control: Origins. Got it in a bundle years ago. Genuinely thought I would hate it as I don't like space strategy games. Didn't realize it was less of a strategy game and more of an RPG with high-energy shooty bits. Also didn't realize how much I'd love the writing and character design, or how engaged I would get with the story. It ended up replacing Mass Effect for me as my go-to space RPG.

Star Control has some older games as well, apparently Star Control 2 has been an inspiration for almost every space adventure rpg made and I'd never even heard of any of them before. xD I never got the hand of SC2, but some folks will swear up and down that its an amazing game so I guess try that one too?

I've always had Two Worlds on my radar, for the simple fact that a friend of mine played it. I didn't want to play it when it was out because I didn't feel that I want to play a classic RPG. I had no idea that Two Worlds 3 is coming out. That's great news for the fans. I hope they don't disappoint.

Hollow Knight for me was a blind buy wihout knowing anything about the game. I liekd Ori and looked for a similar experience. First few hours I was lost in the game without any real direction and already considered it a missbuy. Glad I sticked with it. Now I consider it one of the best games I've ever played and a masterpiece of a game.
Second game that comes to my mind is Antichamber. Thought about giving it a try cause it looked interesting with its simplistic graphics and puzzle mechanics but didn't expect much. The game caught me completly by surprise. It's a one of a kind type of game that you should play if you like puzzle games and thinking outside the box.
The latest game is probably Pokemon Legends Arceus for the Switch. Everything I saw of the game prior to release looked like the worst pokemon game ever made. While the game is nowhere perfect I really enjoyed the new approach to catching pokemon and the freedom of exploration.

I'm glad you're one of the few that had to say something positive about this game. I've not played Pokemon games much, and I'm not going to anytime soon, but this one I was aware from my wife, who kinda criticized it, although didn't play it. She followed the youtuber's criticism for being a mediocre looking game. And sometimes, well a game is not about the visuals. Switch is not anymore a up to date console and we need an updated one to be able to run powerful hungry games. There's a few other games that looks stunning even if it was released years back, but probably the only issue with Arceus is the lack of love placed in the world. What's your thoughts in that?

I gotta agree with antichamber. I have no idea where I got it from, I hadn’t heard of it but gave it a shot.

I did not expect to enjoy Puzzle Agent and its sequel as much as I did. It has really low value on gray market sites and it's an old game with strange art. But I loved it.

That's true. I would always hear you out even if people would judge that. I find it interesting to see what people have to say. Skyrim and pretty much all the Elder Scrolls are damn good games and they are unique in that sense because they offer not a compelling epic story, but rather a replayability and sandboxy experience. I don't reply games much, unless they are online for some reason, but Skyrim, alongside other sandbox or simulators have a special place for me.

Not exactly what you are asking, but I will use Metacritic as a reference of "expectation". I actually think it is a very useful measure, if you read it for what it is -- it is just an aggregate score, made by critics at the time a game was released, and will not correspond 100% to how much you will like a game.
So, with that in mind, here is an interesting list:

There Came an Echo had so-so reviews (58 on Metacritic, 71% on Steam), but I had a lot of fun saying orders to my characters (87 for me).
Wait XCOM turn-base with voice control? Count me in! That's pretty awesome not going to lie.
No Time to Explain was very funny and chaotic (54 on Metacritic, 83% on Steam, 83 for me). Maybe the original version was much worse, since I played the "Remastered" one?
Seen it on giveaways but for some reason I always skipped it. You convinced me to give it a better look at it.
Submerged is a very chill game; it is not amazing, but I got it for the price of a coffee; 47 on Meta, 74% on Steam, 74 for me.
This one does look interesting as well, I've wishlisted it just in case I see it some time.
Contrast has such lovely music and graphics -- though here Steam agrees with me. 62/90%/87.
This does look nice, thanks for making me aware of it.
Ryse: Son of Rome was a fun time. 61/85%/85.
I did play this one. It's graphic still hold up nicely. It wasn't the best game I've played, but it was alright.
Batman (Arkham Knight) was also incredible -- maybe I played it after all the bugs were ironed out? And I actually enjoyed driving the Batmobile! 70/87%/92 -- and I would rate it higher if not for a stupid detail about the Riddle's riddles.
I like the Batman games, they are quite good and I'm not even a fan of the Batman to say the least.
Red Faction II wasn't well rated by Metacritic (64) nor by Steam users (53%), but I enjoyed it well enough (83).
Have been thinking about playing the whole franchise to see what's the game about at some point.

I perfectly understand your point after checking the games out. Some of the time the reviews are misleading and you end up enjoying them. I gotta be honest, I don't follow the Metacritic score, as that could be for more than just Steam? PC issues are different than console for instance.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, Metacritic tries to keep separate scores for PC and each console, and the difference is noticeable when there is a particularly bad port. I did use the PC scores above.
I find that most people that criticize Metacritic want it to be what it is not... of course what you get from it has to be "discounted" with personal preferences and other factors. I must have played about 750 games which have a Metacritic rating; the fact the only a dozen or so have a 20+ point difference says both things: it is a valuable guide, but it is never going to be 100% perfect.
Cheers!
Comment has been collapsed.
Without a doubt. I find Metacritic a overall look of the game, ignoring how it plays over a platform particularly. I like that there's two types of scoring, the one coming from content creators and professional critiques and from the general players. It's a good indication to determine if the numbers are bluffed or it's accurate.

Ballistic Tanks. It's not that I thought it would be bad, but I didn't expect it to be that good, especially since it seemed like just a small game by a super small team of devs. However, the graphics were even better than expected, the gameplay was pretty good and they even added in multiple modes. For 5 bucks, it's a really good tank arcade game, with the only drawback being no online multiplayer.
In comparison, Battle Pixels might be only half the price, but even if it was a tenth of the price, I would still recommend against buying this game. The visuals weren't great, the controls were bad and the gameplay was even worse. It was even more disappointing than I expected, compared to Ballistic Tanks which was way better than I expected.

BIOMUTANT - A bunch of people complained about the narrator; and it is a bit weird because the natives are speaking gibberish and it's translating for you, but there is an option to just.. turn him off in the settings so the current mixed reviews the game has is baffling to me.
Other than one quest being bugged, I didn't have any issues. The crafting was pretty crazy, you could stick anything with anything, and the mounts were pretty cool. I liked the quests and the big open world aspect and the combat. There were a lot of skills and places to explore, and there is no set order to do things and a lot of content is optional, you don't get pointed in any directions. I don't get the hate for it.

If that's annoying, I think people should actually listen always to this gibberish from the game I'm currently playing Yooka-Laylee. It gets on my nerves sometimes to listen to what they say. I've seen other games with similar concept. I would not be bothered much by a narrator really. I'd probably not turn it off.
I think Biomutant is a decent game, I'd try it too and not listen to the mixed reviews.

It's the other way for me as well. There were couple of games that I thought they would be bad and they were bad. Other than that I don't tend to play games if I think they would be bad. There are also many games with overwhelmingly positive rating that I don't like. Though I like to give chances to as many games as I could, but I stopped doing this for some genres.

Sometimes reviews can be misleading. I've seen people just writing a positive review, but not explaining what the game is. E.g. recently I've found out about There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension and if you look at most positive reviews they are filled with "There Is No Review".
You can only assume and take a leap of faith in these kind of reviews as you can never know if you'll like the game.

That's why I like GOG's review system more. Not everyone should write reviews but everyone should be able to give points, rather than just thumbs up or thumbs down. Neutral should've been an option on Steam long time ago IMO.
Also, I actually look at the genre first, then in-game screenshots and trailers. Reviews are pretty much secondary for me. There are many games that I like have mixed reviews for example. However, I wasn't expecting them to be bad.

Totally agree! Steam should have a neutral one or a star system, as 5 stars or 4 fall into the recommended and 3 is the neutral spot, while 2 and 1 stars are in the not recommended area. Anything different would do, to better help you make a compelling review.
Also, I actually look at the genre first, then in-game screenshots and trailers. Reviews are pretty much secondary for me. There are many games that I like have mixed reviews for example. However, I wasn't expecting them to be bad.
After looking at trailers and screenshots I check the reviews if they are available and normally don't pick the reviews that are a few sentence long. I don't get a lot of information out of that. I prefer a longer paragraph because I get a sense that the person writing the review put in the effort to share their thoughts on the game, negative or positive as the review is, it's important to see the good and the bad of the game.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think that's a grey area. For me it's the keywords rather than the length of the review. Some long reviews could be total rubbish (mostly copypasta though), while some one sentence reviews could be really useful, especially when I'm looking for a certain thing in that game. So it doesn't important if it's long or short. I do respect detailed long reviews but I 90% pass them unless I'm uncertain about a game and investigating at the moment.
Down part is, we have to write something even if it is a single dot, and because of this we see those "reviews". If it was a star system with commenting is optional, most of those reviews probably wouldn't happened in the first place.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, sometimes it's easier to kinda determine what people think based on that. I think ideally what Steam needs to do is change a bit the reviewing system and maybe add a neutral rating so that way we can pretty much say if we would stand out from recommending or not recommending this game.
There's a line between the two and that's not being met.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, Steam reviews definitely need a rework. I don't think they would add neutral stance on the current system though, we're too deep in the rabbit hole.
I do have neutral in the mind reviews, some of them are positive and the others are negative. Deciding it is a dilemma we shouldn't have.

Well, I have a way of reviewing my games, here's what I like to do: Review System
Comment has been collapsed.
Decent would be the middle ground as well as mediocre. Where a decent game gets to pass towards recommendation if I feel I enjoyed it enough to consider recommendable, if that makes sense. Mediocre are games that I'd not bother recommending to others as it didn't fill that enjoyment not even a bit and it felt like it's more a chore than actual entertainment. The game may contain flaws at times too, on both decent and mediocre, but on mediocre are too bothersome to ignore.
Comment has been collapsed.
Thanks for explaining, especially since this is not my mother tongue.
Generally speaking (as for words), I feel like decent is a 8/10 rating and mediocre is a 5/10 rating, without being neutral. At least according to how I saw those words in years at different situations. I may take them as too literal though.
Comment has been collapsed.
If your native language is Chinese, I'd probably consider it as 平平. Average, but then again, mediocre seems to be below that. 合适 may be the right way to describe Decent. But again, it's hard to say really as translations over a language to another can lose their meaning.
Never the less the rating would be like this:
In the end, it doesn't matter. What matters is that it's just a rating I follow through to better classify games.
PS: English isn't my native language is. So, that's the same for me. Sometimes it's hard to make sense what it means for your own native language when you'd put it differently.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, if you considered the name on my Steam profile, it's actually Japanese (not a real word though but still my name) and neither of them is my native language. So, thanks for the effort. My native language is Turkish by the way. When I check English-Turkish dictionary, the meaning of decent has many connotations. And Cambridge Dictionary says "of a satisfactory quality or level". Maybe it's cultural but 6/10 is not satisfactory to me. Though I noticed that I probably never used it as a rating word, maybe because of that it sounded weird for me.
Though, I noted this as for future references and will try to keep it in my mind.

I was far from close. 🤣 I didn't check your username as well, they can be misleading. I've often been misinterpreted as something else than where I'm originally from. Middle Eastern or Indian were the first thought of many, although, I've never thought it would originate from there.
Maybe it's cultural but 6/10 is not satisfactory to me.
Well that's because in school getting a 6 would pretty much suck. Anything above 7 or 8 would be ideal. But 6 is basically on the floating level. It's really hard to classify games based on score, because if you do rate them, there's some things they can be a 10 and on other aspects barely get a 2.
Though I noticed that I probably never used it as a rating word, maybe because of that it sounded weird for me.
I barely rate games below that mark, because I pretty much try to play games that I'll enjoy. Unless I won them as a gift or someone gave it for free, I don't really see myself rating games that low.
Comment has been collapsed.
It was a random guess without any base fact? Well then. :D
I'm actually not sure if it is because of school though. The corresponded word for satisfaction in Turkish is a strong word. So below 8/10 is not a satisfactory level, you should feel the saturation of put emotion here.
I agree with rating games, there should be many aspects inspected to reach a final score. Maybe Valve followed this pattern because not everyone is an inspector. Though I still believe, from a social inquiry angle, there should be at least 3 levels (or 5) but always have to be an odd number, just to be able to being neutral. It's an opinion too.
because I pretty much try to play games that I'll enjoy.
See, when the expectation is already set high it can only go worse and rarely can go better. I think most of the points made here like this. Since you wouldn't play a game that you don't think you will enjoy, it should be a very rare statement. So this only leaves gifts and maybe some recommendation from a friend. And maybe someone who randomly plays games? For me it's very rare that I go out from the genres I love. I don't like roguelike at all, but Binding of Isaac was a recommendation from a friend and it was an exception for example. Or I cannot play horror games (there were a couple of attempts) but I liked Neverending Nightmares (it was something unique though).

My country was 7/10 I believe. But if you want, you can go below that by one point. But that's just a school rating system. It doesn't really determine your wisdom by all means.
After researching I kinda tend to understand the new review system. Although it would add up a whole branch of reviews, generally speaking, this would impact the overall scoring. Neutral or Informative would give me and you an idea. But in the end, the Recommend and the Not Recommend are purely an overall look of the game. It goes as Although Flawed "I've Enjoyed it" or "I didn't enjoy it much".

There is a demo-esque, free game you can play to see whether you would like it or not: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1241700/There_Is_No_Game_Jam_Edition_2015/

I think only Apex Legends™. I hate Battle Royals and PvP focused games, I don't like competition, but cooperation, so, I was sure I was going to hate it, just like I did both PUBG and Fortnite, but, I actually enjoyed it a lot.
There's a lot of games that are considered bad, that I like, but not many that I thought were going to be terrible and weren't, mostly because I don't play games I don't think I'd like, unless someone recommends them to me.

You know what? I never actually liked Battle Royals games either. I didn't pick on any to tell you the truth. The only game I played was the Call of Duty one, but I only did it a few matches and dropped it. I only played it because a friend asked me to.
I've never tried Apex, but I've been told by another friend that it's a lot different than many others. I'm glad to hear you like the game. Sometimes we need to defy our own belief system and try things we normally we would disagree, only then we can understand ourselves better.

Same here, I just love that a match is not just shoot-die-respawn-look at scoreboard, like 90% of other multiplayer games. Never thought I'd like BR games, but Apex kinda changed my mind. It's hard sure, but the movement system and unique characters elevate it from a standard CoD Warzone setting.

Two Worlds 2, I didn't expect much out of this random game I found but it turned out to be one of the best RPGs I ever played. It reminds me of Gothic series, there are parts where it's even better than Gothic and parts where it's worse. Steam reviews are mixed but I love the game, still looks decent to me after all these years, might play it soon, there's also a relatively new DLC that came out!

I don't want to spoil but it has so many great features! At least stick to it through the long tutorial, games teaches you to use all the skills and weapons by giving you one big starting quest, not all the skills tho, there will be even more later, and guilds are so fun!

Any games you've had an awful feeling that it's not going to be that great and when you've played it it changed your whole perspective about it? These game might have technical flaws or is overall having bugs and issues, yet you personally enjoyed it enough to recommend it to others or not.
By writing the name here, you can also add lines if you recommend it, what's your thoughts on it and what things should others pay attention before purchasing it.
I'll list a few:
Have fun! 😄
