None of the nominees has nothing to do with the category they've been nominated in and that is true for all the categories. It seems people just vote for most popular games and give 0 poop if they are even remotely connected to a theme. Whooa dude doom? Whoa dude gta v? really....whoa,dudes...

Here i said it.

Don't get me started on the Test of Time award, the only nominee that had the most credibility was Age of Empires II and maybe TF2, the rest were released relatively recently.

Yes. They are all equally retarded. It's just that this was beyond retarded. Doom for example is complete opposite of 'whoa dude' . Its success is based on fact that it's not WHOA DUDE at all. It's carefully crafted game with carefully crafted formula which stood test of time,it's as far from surprise as it goes.

Witcher 3 for example is brilliant game and one of my all time favorites but it has 0 moments which would make anyone say whoa dude.

It's just pure shit these rewards.

Yeah... and anybody that had a woah dude moment by the end of the game need to really rethink a lot of things, I certainly understand where you come from on that example especially.

It's description clearly stated that the game is just as good as it was at release. No time limit was mentioned. Are the categories under-defined? Yes. Are the picks legit? Yes. Move on.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But how do you compare the way the game feels now to the way it felt at release when it's been so recently released? The point of such a comparison is to see which games were good for their time but lack innovations brought later on and which work perfectly regardless of how much gaming changes. The only one old enough for such a comparison is AoE2. The rest are still on the cutting edge, so to speak, of their genres.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not against AoE2, I just feel that people should just vote for it before they would try to discredit any other title. It's really a feat to remain on the surface after all those year (though the HD release bumped up it's visibility a lot), why is it not enough for people to see it as a real old-timer on the list, why they have to argue about why it (possibly) won't win it against the other games? (Older games are just not as widely popular, and hard to focus on one. Civ (1), Transport or Rollercoaster Tycoon, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 or even Wizard of Wor would indeed kick the collective asses of the nominees, but there are just too many things to pick and too many smaller fandoms. Hard to beat Skyrim and such, but why can't we just roll with the stupid voting?)

I know, but how you classify it as a long-time? 5 years? 10? 15? 20 or 25? Some games can't even hold up for weeks, are they short-lived or others are long-lived then? I really know what does it mean, but unless there are any limitations in the rules / description, literally any game is acceptible, even if they don't make as much sense as other ones. It's just tiring to see that some people on Steamgifts apparently rather complain about the games they feel unfair to be nominated than to be happy about the ones got in.

The description didn't really match what you would expect from the title though. Test of Time sounds like old games, but the description says otherwise.

Let's be honest. Valve knows results before you even vote :)

Nah man, they probably only care that the game that wins is a popular one, so they can put it on sale again and sell some more copies.

And that is what I just said. And that is why they already know results :)

I doubt that they'd rig it, people will most likely choose the most popular games anyway, the awards are pretty much meaningless though.

I'll agree with you on that, when I first saw the Community write-ins i was very surprised, but they most likely chose what they wanted with these. In my comment I meant that the games winning in their categories will be picked by people.

I figured, but since they messed with it from the start my point was that you weren't really picking the winners, and that given the lack of transparency, I wouldn't expect this step to be left to the people either.

it doesnt matter. its just mindless advertising pretending to be relevant... i highly doubt any of the voting we do (in the first round or second) matters, i doubt theyre even being recorded. its just a trigger to give us our daily card for looking at some advertising.

I never thought id say this, but given how dull and 'business-like' valve has become... id give anything to even go back to when we had that stupid clicker event.. at least that one felt kinda fun and had a little bit of a sense of community around it, even if it was meaningless.

It seems to me that most people really thought what to put in the first one (and maybe the last two/three), and then didn't care about what the rest of the awards meant, because they just wanted the badge already.

As long as I get trading cards from it, I couldn't give a shit as to whether it's stupid or not. It's all meaningless in the end.

It seems you're caring more about the title of the award than the actual description itself.

Some games melt your face. Maybe it was a crazy plot twist. Maybe you just got your wisdom teeth removed.
Either way, this game BLOWS YOUR MIND.

Maybe the games nominated did actually blow people minds.

I am :( It's just an FPS with hallways, a lot of the girl's relationship and stuff it's been taken directly from bioshock 2, even literal dialogues. There is no way you can fail in that game, is easy, it's a straing line when you only need to shoot. Everything is casual. Plasmids are useless and are only there because of the name of the game (although they are necessary in the hardest difficulty, I agree) and the end twist is overrated.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

a lot of the girl's relationship

you say that like it's a bad thing :| Elizabeth is one of the most useful NPC characters in any video games from recent memory. She tosses you heals during battle, coins she finds, other random trinkets and is actually fleshed out as a proper, believable character instead of a bland one.

I've played all 3, I felt 2 was the weakest link in the chain tbh.

Some games melt your face. Maybe it was a crazy plot twist.

Doom and GTA V both fits these categories. And almost every high-caliber action game, trippy game, or plot-twist/mindfuckery game. There are incredible amounts of acceptable games ,and either as the result of the AAA hype, or maybe even a bought advertisement or something, but the games that are in the finals ARE in the finals. They are credible. At least look at the description of the categories before the constant complaining, people.
Test of time? It's about still holding up. You know, for example Skyrim is almost 6 years old, a new console generation (and almost another half) came out since it. Game industry move forward a LOT since it, in terms of topics, themes, mechanics, trends, and yet even by today's standards Skyrim, maybe the newest game from the list still as good (even better tbh, because of mods). The awards is not "oldest game that I still like today" - it's for a good game that's still holds up today, or will hold up later, and this is not dependant from it's age.
Dear complainers, get your head out of your butt and judge the nominated games in ALL categories based on the award's description, not on your own one. Also, the whole voting doesn't matter for sh*t, and you know it.

What Steam can do, is allow players to nominate any game they wish -- that would be more thoughtful, right?

Doom 4 as a whoe dude was actually credible just for its first 5 minutes alone. Bioshock 3 as well (I mean how many people actually guessed the identity of the antagonist without any outside help?). But in general they are popularity contests among recent AAA games and a few older ones with large Steam user bases, yes.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree. It's like this because the nominations just reflect what people play the most, not what's actually pertinent to the category. If you play a game a lot, or it's just your favorite game, you say to yourself "well it fits this category, because there was this one line of dialogue that fits. done!"

Anyway. I don't take these awards seriously, I'm just here for the cards.
